    I am proud to say that I saw this exact same show at the Philadelphia Zoo in the Summer of 1981. I believe Todd Rundgren is one of the most under rated, under appreciated musician EVER!

    This.
    This band was so freakin' tight, their harmonies were so perfect. They are, to me, the epitome of what a four piece band should be, only surpassed by The Beatles.
    Man, I miss this.

    Saw them maybe 79, MRF near St. Louis, was 13 then, drank my first beers. Great show, bought the 8-track. Memorable was "Road to Utopia", "Caravan", and "Girl You Make Me Crazy". Rundgren never sold out, he stayed progressive and developed with times, still does.

    I remember seeing them at the Philadelphia zoo right around this time. It was one of the most impressive shows I had ever been to. Then I got to see them again a few years later in LA at the Universal amphitheater. Incredible vocals., musicianship...just amazing!

  • @OnBendedKneeMusic
    @OnBendedKneeMusic 9 років тому +7

    Absolutely, positively, one of the very best bands ever. Especially live. I've seen them several times in the LA area, and they are perfection. Their harmonies and playing, the song writing and humor. Very clever lyrics. They don't make bands like this anymore. Or musicians like this anymore. Its all "auto tune" and big, fake production. No originality. Most of the rock/pop stars can't even sing live anymore. Its all backing tracks. I miss this era.

      Gee, the same thing was said of certain artists in the '00s, and the '90s, and especially the '80s when synths were "taking over." Get thee to thy wheelchair.

      OnBendedKneeMusic You've seen Utopia "several times"??? You lie!! I've seen them once, in 1977 on the "Ra" tour, and that was so amazing I almost died of an overdose of JOY! So, "several times" I find a bit hard to believe! You must have a high "joy" tolerance!

      No, sorry, there is a difference. When I hear pop and rock radio these days, I simply cannot take it. The shit they play is juvenile as hell and sounds like nursery rhymes with mindless lyrics, stupid "melodies," and largely computer generated crap. Any douchbag with a Mac and qwerty keyboard in front of him can TRY to make music. There are very few good artists in the pop and rock fields these days. It's mainly bullshit or rehashed stuff from back when bands like Utopia were in their prime. The ONLY stuff I hear nowadays that is actually kickin' ass is prog rock/metal bands like Mammoth (not the 3 piece with vocals, but the 3 piece instrumental band with Wes Thrailkill on guitar), and guys like Blackberry Smoke (which of course is so good because they are tapping into the southern rock vibe from the 70s). But, no dude, you can keep the shit they play on the radio nowadays and call music. Back in the 70s and 80s, probably eighty percent of the stuff on the radio was pretty good--even the one hit wonders. And ten percent sucked. Now? Hell no. One percent decent and ninety-nine percent garbage. We've got bimbos with big tits that can't sing to save their ass and apes grunting like Neanderthals and calling in singing, with guitars tuned two octaves low. Yeah, that's talent...

    Miracle of miracles...I was there at this very show in Royal Oak, my first-ever Todd/Utopia live experience. I was shocked to see Todd's "short" haircut, and amazed to see the Cream guitar clearly shown on the "Todd" LP liner. I recall the TV truck out front and hearing that his kid was there. We waited a long time after the show to see Todd get in his limo. When asked if he would sign my poster, he replied, "I'm sorry". Ouch! (in a hurry?) 30 years later I'm able to experience it once again!

    Excellent concert - many thanks for the upload! I was lucky enough to see Todd do the complete Something/Anything album. It was in Orlando, FL, and featured an odd lineup - Todd was the opening act. A band called the Hello People took the stage 1st and played 30 min or so, then another guitarist and bass player joined them, and finally, Todd joined them. I've been listening to Todd since 2nd Nazz album, but that's the only time I've seen him live. The rest of the concert was unusual, too. The next act was George Carlin doing Al Sleet and the seven words you can't say on TV (from Class Clown album). Then the headliners, John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu Orchestra came on, doing Inner Mounting Flame album! Complete with Cobham, Goodman, etc. What a band! And the venue wasn't even half full - people hadn't caught on to Todd or McLaughlin yet. Todd played a powerful, emotional set, Carlin was on a roll, and McLaughlin and his group just electrified everyone. They had almost telepathic communication going onstage and played as driven by magic! This concert would never have been possible in today's atmosphere where marketing and ticket sales trump all. Thank God for memories!

      +phil benny Sounds like a totally awesome show. It's definitely not the same today. I play guitar and there are zillions of amazing guitarists nowadays, but it still ain't the same. There were so many creative bands back then and, aside from the many Blues Rock bands around (some of whom I liked) they all sounded different (like Todd, Yes, Tull, Deep Purple, Zep, Floyd, ELP, Zappa, Gentle Giant, The Who, etc., etc.). I knew as a teenager that we had it really good back then, but I think it was lost on most of us just how good and what a renaissance it truly was.I saw McLaughlin in the mid 70's in Central Park, NYC. It was awesome, but I was a little too young to see him during the original Mahavishnu days in the early 70's. There are a few pretty bad videos of them on YT but I haven't seen any with really good quality. Yeah, I miss the 70's too.

    Ive been seeing live shows now since the middle 80s.A very wide range of artists from madonna to metallica.etc....Im watching this show for the first and am simply BLOWN away from the completeness of this performance.You will not see a modern act display talent remotely close to this.From vocalization to instrument performance.Thanks so much for putting this up.

    Todd always has a blast. He is in his prime here as are the rest of the band - Kasim's voice cuts through really nicely as well, Too bad "Healer" isn't part of this program - that was exceptional. All on the Road to Utopia. And a few years later we'd all win the Waiting Game. Man,!, does he ever sing so beautifully !! Roger and Willie too - - just fantastic work. And right here, we can all have it again and again.

    Thank you for sharing this awesome video! I am currently reading "A Wizard A True Star Todd Rundgren in the Studio" and just finished the section about them touring in camouflage. So to find this, was perfect!
