I am 93% deaf and read lips fairly well. Even *I* struggled with this challenge. BUT that proves Jessica's point even further on how challenging it is to lip read. I read an article once a while ago that lip reading is only about 60% effective, which is still not much in my opinion. I try to think on the bright side of situations where I struggle with understanding someone, no matter how many times the person repeats what he/she said. It can be funny sometimes when I thought I did hear what someone said, but it was completely inaccurate. Once a friend was talking about an organization with the words "For the Nation." I was so shocked and appalled by what she said even after asking to repeat. The whole time I thought she kept saying "fornication." I almost soaped her tongue out! :)
So many young people are lightening speed at texting now. I think I would ask them to type difficult passages and show me. Or text me, if they were someone I want to have my contact info.
HOH over here got all three the second time I watched it. Keep in mind that not all people pronounce words the same way. Like accents, lisps and the shape of their lips can throw me off. That's usually why I struggle with strangers, but know my families' lip like the back of my hand.
Andie yes!! Everyone is different which is hard to explain to people right? Like sometimes I will turn to a family member and ask them to repeat what someone else said because I know their lips shapes better.
When I was little my dad often boasted about reading lips, I never thought about it. Now, sometimes at work I can pick up a little bit in high context, either of two expected words, but a third option comes up and completely baffles me.
"Hello, my name is Jessica" "Would you like a receipt" and... "the butler has to clear the table?" the third one was so hard! I like putting myself in other people's shoes. I used to work for a women who's completely blind and I learned how to use Voice over on my phone and took a shower with my eyes close to better understand her too :P Btw... it's SO HARD to shower with your eyes closed.
ASL Anissa ....boy, I just did not get that last one. When I was a kid I used to walk around my house blindfolded for a day. I don't remember why I started it, but I like seeing what people different than me go through too. It is humbling. Of course I spent an entire summer somersaulting through my house instead of walking, so maybe I'm just weird. Ok, there's no maybe about it. Lol.
Brooklyn Ana. First one was easy and I got it on my first try. I figured out the second one on my second try, but I thought she said "Would you like a receipt?". I couldn't get the third one for the life of me
for #2 i thought it was "would you like the receipt" and for #3 I thought it was "the [blank] was terrible". I couldn't get the last one lol. yours seems like a good guess
Jessica, I really appreciate your videos. I am a teacher and I am reading the graphic novel El Deafo with my students, and using your videos so that my students get an understanding that there are real people out there experiencing the challenges associated with being deaf. Thank you for being an inspiration!
I am not deaf or hard of hearing but I do often need to read lips (it helps me process words better). I did pretty good with this one, I think! Though I notice the biggest struggle for me is when someone has a different accent or says a certain sound in a different way. I've seen some people from Europe do this and it's far more difficult. This really is a difficult thing, and I'm glad that more people are able to learn that, deaf or not.
I found that "reading" your face helped a LOT with the second and third sentence, as the context (obviously) isn't there. In a given situation I'm sure it would be easier to distinguish between "Would you LIKE a receipt?" vs. "Do you HAVE the receipt?" even if it isn't clear from the lip reading, and to figure out who "needs" to do what (Yeah that's all I got from the last one :P )
I have a CI and I got the first two the first time & the last one I had to look 4 times and I think I got it! I agree, lip-reading is very hard. I rely on it 24/7, so tiring!
I want to know if am messed up or not. I can hear her voice and it's on mute. Am I going deaf ? I need to know, I try to move the speaker to my ear but nothing but when I see her talking I can hear it. It's odd. It's only happens when I want it to
This was amazing and really hits home your point. I'm still working on #3 and have watched it about 8 times already. Should we emphasize our words or talk slower when speaking to hard of hearing and deaf people? I always wondered what it would be like for deaf people when talking to so eons with food or gum in their mouth, ew, or are just mumbles, must be very frustrating. It's a wonder you don't hear about deaf people going postal because they have to try to fit I to a hearing world, and clearly we do this make it easy. Love these challenges. I'm going to try some this weekend at my cousin's wedding!
I use lipreading a lot, being Deaf, and I'm pretty decent at it in general. The first two, I got no problem! The last one I think I got it, but not until watching it multiple times. And you move around a lot when saying that sentence so it makes it difficult :P
As a person who prides herself on public speaking, this emphasizes the need to be clear when you are speaking. I hate it when I ask a person, 'What's your name', and they say, 'Bendover'..... rather than 'Ben.... Dover'. When you are asked to repeat for clarity, pause between your words. Don't add extra words, even if you think it is being 'polite', as it is causing a barrier in your communication. Use inflection with your voice.... and emphasize that by pacing, and again, separate your words!
my guesses right now are 1. hi my name is jessica 2. would you like to take a seat 3. the boat is under the table (idek if the last one made any sense but yeah this is my first time lip reading)
I am learning ASL, but I am not D/HH. I started learning to Lip Read when I was in the 2nd/3rd grade when my mother bought me a TV, and would tell me to turn it off, and I would watch TV with the sound off. I also have trouble understanding what I do hear, so I would lip read to keep up in conversations, or when at church and they were singing songs. Still, Lip Reading 'ain't no joke'. I got the first two "easy-peasy". I'm here to see the answer to the third one
I lip read all the time. I am 95% deaf and cannot wear hearing aids at all so lip reading is my only way of hearing what someone is saying in the hearing world.
I'm pretty sure the first two are, "Hello, my name is Jessica." and "Would you like a reciept." but the third one I had to watch like 10 times and all I could come up with is "The bathroom is really terrible" XD I don't think that's right lmao
I know how it is being deaf I was born legally deaf I went through 5 surgeries when I was a baby it helped me here in a little bit but I need surgery again can't get the money so I'm using really high-end hearing aids but my hearing is getting a lot worse so I'm trying to learn more sign language I Rely mostly on lip reading right now but I think if I learn sign language it really help.
Hi. I'm a sound designer restoring the audio for a film from the 60's in which two short lines of dialogue are lost and we need to redub and subtitle. Would you or anyone be interested in having a look and telling me what the lines might be? Apologies if this request is insensitive. I'm not sure what the etiquette in hearing impaired community would be about something like this. Thank you!
my best friend is hard at hearing but she doesn't lip read or any of that she just uses her hearing aids and I think I got the first two witch is hi I'm Jessica and the second one can you repeat that . I'm not hard at hearing or any of this but it makes me fill bad that people treat others differently based off of who they are and me being who I am I go through that alot
Im sure the answers are 1) Hello, my name is Jessica 2) Would you like a receipt? 3) The butler has to clear the table I am profoundly deaf growing up and I lip read pretty much everyday, i am very pro at reading lips even across the room
anyone able to translate a video of person talking without sound? it was a special meeting and I had permission of person but the phone didn't record correctly.
1st hi my name is Jessica, thought number 2 was "what do you want/did you have to eat" And didn't have a clue about 3 lol I don't lip read as you can tell
"Hello my name is Jessica" "would you like the receipt" or "What did you have to eat?" "the -- here is terrible" or "the buster has cleared the table"? residual hearing and lip reading is how I get by since I don't sign well (@_@
I am trying to learn to lip read I’m not deaf but I think it would be cool. First one was: hi my name is Jessica Second one I think was: what would you like to eat And the last one all I got was: table
Mine are bizarre... but that's our world, where nothing makes sense and anything can be comedy if we try! LOL! 1. Hi, my name is Jessica. 2. Would you lie really? (Seeing others with "receipt" but "really" and "receipt" are contextual, so I'm not trying for context, just as I see it :) 3. This one is going to be a problem. (No, I mean that's what I lipread :D ) And people wonder why it's so exhausting to socialize ;) LOL!
1.Hi my name is Jessica 2. Would you like a receipt I didn’t understand the last one even though I do have to read lips every day since I am hard of hearing. I love how you bring deaf culture on UA-cam so people around the world can understand the deaf culture even more
Late Deafened here. 1: Hi, my name is Jessica 2: Would you have a (?) 3: The best content is (?) The second and third ones looked different both times.

Hi as an absolute novice at lip reading, I came to this channel to get some introduction to this domain because my hearing is disappearing.even with two hearing aids. I did the 3 lip reading quizzes and was keen to see if I got some words right.. I felt disrespect when she did NOT provide the answer at the end of quiz AND to add smugness to the disrespect she said.. " I'll think about it". Big thumbs down to your you and your channel.

lol! I have had situations similar to that! Thanks for sharing this!! :)
Katherine Anglin Am I right to say that lip reading is like seeing the Acronym and filling up the blank?
@@JessicaFloresLimeMoney What is answer number three?
So many young people are lightening speed at texting now. I think I would ask them to type difficult passages and show me. Or text me, if they were someone I want to have my contact info.
The first two I got no problem. The third one, something about clear the table, or under the table. But I'm a lipreader! lol
Yes you're on the right track!! :)
Hahah I thought she said terrible hahah table makes more sense
HOH over here got all three the second time I watched it. Keep in mind that not all people pronounce words the same way. Like accents, lisps and the shape of their lips can throw me off. That's usually why I struggle with strangers, but know my families' lip like the back of my hand.

I got 1 and 2. The 3rd one I did not understand at all. And moving your head around made it that much harder lol.
"Hello, my name is Jessica"
"Would you like a receipt"
and... "the butler has to clear the table?" the third one was so hard!

Thank you Annisa for providing the answers to us .. unlike Jessica ☹️
I thought the second one was "would you like to eat?"😅 i'm new to this
1. Hi my name is Jessica
2. Do u have the receipt
3. The butler has to clear the table
Please tell me if I got them right

Hi I would love to use this for training, can I have the answers please,?!
I want to know if am messed up or not.
I can hear her voice and it's on mute.
Am I going deaf ?
I need to know, I try to move the speaker to my ear but nothing but when I see her talking I can hear it.
It's odd. It's only happens when I want it to
Still can't get #3. The mouse cleared across the table??
I thought it was the butter is under the table lol
Jennifer Berrigan I think it's "the butler has to clear the table"
I saw the last word as "terrible" the total phrase still eludes me but I'm leaning towards "the butler/butter at this tea was terrible"
The "butler" has to clear the table?
This was amazing and really hits home your point. I'm still working on #3 and have watched it about 8 times already. Rogan Shannon totally did that on purpose :) I was going to move around a lot more lol
I think they are;
1. Hello my name is Jessica
2. Would you like a receipt?
3. The menu is on the table

I lip read all the time. I am 95% deaf and cannot wear hearing aids at all so lip reading is my only way of hearing what someone is saying in the hearing world.
