    Eleanor Parker’s Baroness is the classiest “villain” I’ve ever seen. What a remarkable actress.

      Yet she gave up the captain. She allowed him to walk away with her knowing he has deeper feelings for Maria. But the way she let Marie go at the end of the scene was yea rude. She thought she got rid of her and could have captain all to herself but after she saw him sad he realized they weren’t meant to be. She was a shy lil devil but allowed him to be happy

    Eleanor Parker was such a polished actress that she managed to take the “bitchiness” out of the baroness and make the audience
    see her as a woman in-love , just giving Maria a gentle nudge.After all , everyone accepted Maria’s intent on becoming “a good nun”.

    Eleanor Parker played the Baroness so well you couldn't really despise her even though she filled Maria with confusion and left briefly. When she returned, Elsa accepted the reality with grace. After all, the real antagonists were Herr Zeller and the Nazis.

      In the hands of someone else other than Eleanor Parker the Baroness could have come across as a 2D villain, but she turned it into a very sympathetic character that I didn’t necessarily root for as a child, but can definitely relate to as an adult. Robert Wise initially worked with Eleanor Parker in the 1950 film Three Secrets and immediately thought she’d make the perfect Baroness. He was right. I thought her role was good enough for a supporting actress nod, but oh well.

      @bearcattony00, very well said. I respect The Baroness the most for how she stepped out when she realized that the Captain had made his choice and the choice wasn’t her. She didn’t make it hard for him or go on and get any revenge on him which is just would a mature elegant woman should do. You could tell that when the Captain told her that it was no use between them, it broke her heart badly, there were tears in her eyes and she was trying not to cry. You can’t help but feel bad for her because she was a truly nice person deep down inside and she really did love Georg just as much as Maria did. Justice for Baroness Schraeder always forever and may Eleanor Parker R.I.P. ❤️

    I feel like we're not supposed to like the Baroness --- but while I didn't like her as a kid, I've softened to her over the years. The way she manipulated Maria in this scene and took advantage of her confusion and inexperience wasn't nice, but it's hard to hate her for it. She and Georg were in an established relationship, and this pretty young woman just came along and stole his heart away without even trying. That must have been devastating for her. And despite this, ultimately she accepted it when Georg told her it wasn't going to work, and she wished him well.
    Georg had called Elsa his "savior," earlier in the film, but I think there was a point where he came to realize that wasn't true. It was Maria who saved him --- and his whole family, for that matter. She introduced laughter and music to his children when they needed it most. She challenged him and told him the truth, even if it wasn't what he wanted to hear, and her influence eventually melted his icy heart and helped him repair his broken bonds with them.
    Aside from the obvious fact that Georg and Maria were wildly attracted to each other from the day they met, how could anyone possibly compete with that?

    I love that the last shot is fully continuous, from Maria walking down the hall to leaving the note to exiting. Really good piece of filming in an excellently made movie.

  • @maryam.m
    @maryam.m 2 роки тому +50

    I think it's interesting that this is the only time in the movie where Elsa seems to "fit" into the scene. In every other scene, she is the odd one out. Take the rowboat/argument/resolution scene. She wears a chic pink suit which signifies her role as the Captain's lover, but everyone else is wearing shades of grey, green and brown. The children, the Captain, Maria and even Uncle Max fit the natural surroundings outside as well as the home's interior color palette. The baroness alone stands out as if she doesn't belong with the others. Only in this glamorous party does she finally seem to be in her element, briefly gaining influence. However, her celebration takes on a tone of sadness, as we the audience have seen the sacrifice that needed to be made first. Thankfully, the baroness comes to realize that this position does not suit her and gracefully bows out of the engagement once Maria returns. It's truly poignant. Two classy ladies acknowledging each other's feelings and taking turns to make space for the other to be happy. As the audience, you can't help but root for them both.

    Brilliant Act 1 finale, have always liked it. The Baroness hints to Max about her growing influence over the Captain and their future together, making the audience stay engaged questioning what she has planned. The swelling music as Maria takes a long last look at the mansion before dashing off. This whole scene just works perfectly.

    I just watched the movie with my sister and we had a blast, partly because we found ourselves unexpectedly shipping the baroness and Max like Amazon Prime. 😆 I mean, for real, every time the two are on screen together, they always seem eager to go have a friendly chat in some corner, and the chemistry is REAL, like you could easily believe they’ve been married for two decades. And yet it’s never acknowledged by any other character and nobody’s talking about it ? We were disappointed it didn’t lead to anything, because I swear, they would have made the best couple in this movie.

    She left this part makes me sad cause she made them happy the kids and they were sad. It an interesting scene cause the Baroness and Maria are dueling over the captains affections. The Captain was dating the Baroness first going to Vienna to see her the relationship seems on course. But she only interested in him and his money the kids not really gonna put them in boarding school. Then along comes Maria who wants be a nun but is a ball of fun and sees that kids love there dad and fears him but want his attention she gets to know them they open up to here and she realizes there pranks our them acting out there frustration she calls there bluff. She lays into the Captain your kids need you more she the become the mom figure they been craving for,. The Baroness being sly tries to reclaim her property of the Captain by guilting Maria that she should leave the villa and return to the abby to finish her nun training that her feelings for the Captain are wrong. The Captain tries to move on with the Baroness but he developed strong feelings for Maria that can not be denied. The children are sad she left and show there dislike for the Baroness being forced on them as there new mom. Eventually the Baroness realizes when Maria has returned as governess the house is too crowded for both. So she steps aside gracefully packs up her things and tells Captain she moving on engagement over and that he should go be with Maria she never be a nun now that he should tell Maria how he feels.
