- My focus just started having some trans trouble. I found that this is the easiest way to reset this transmission and it only takes 15-30 seconds!! Feel free to comment and tell me if this worked for you! I know that the video put out by “Joseph Saj” didn’t work for me and playing around found that this resets my particular model (se hatchback)
You just saved me a transmission replacement!!! My focus was shifting hard and I thought transmission was gone. I found this video while looking up “transmission replacement” videos.. thanks!!

LOL first thing I thought
Wtf?👀👀🧐🤔

I love how sounded like he had a stroke right as he was finishing saying it, but he just didn’t care enough to fix his grammar 🤣
@@someguywithaford my grammar hasn’t always been that great. However, you know what I meant by that!🤣
Had to reset my transmission after replacing the battery 🔋 I thought my transmission blew because it would stay in neutral, very helpful video to all focus owners
Same bro thank god for this video or I would’ve replace transmission
God bless you! Thank you for this video. My husbands vehicle wouldn’t start after work so I packed my three small children up, one of whom was asleep, and brought jumper cables for him to jump the battery which worked then the car wouldn’t go in reverse and a transmission light came on. I stumbled upon this video and saw enough comments saying it worked so I told my husband this might be worth trying and IT WORKED! Thank you for helping us get his car home tonight.
I’m beyond happy that this video works for people where ever they may be! I’m glad that I found this out and that it really helps people! You are beyond welcome and this video should work with transmission issues on the focus and fiesta platforms, as long as they have the dps6, 6 speed dual clutch automatic!
Same. Had a recall appt. But after I did this it literally fixed the issue and had to cancel the appt. Going on a year soon since I originally watched this and went by your instructions and it hasn't came back. Thank you!!!
Wth?? This really just fixed my car. It was jerking and slipping so bad and the lag from pressing the gas pedal to acceleration was like a whole second. This is insane thankyou so much man. Ive been thinking i need a new car so bad bc of it. This changes everything. I cant believe i didnt hear about this earlier im almost embarrassed
Did you get a check engine light or a message about it? Overheating transmission? or any DTC about something being stuck I’m going through that now. I haven’t tried this yet, but I’m going to tonight when it cools down I noticed the transmission overheating message comes up a lot quicker during the daytime and I don’t wanna fry it.
@@dmv_baltimore_aviation yes i freaking did! Transmission malfunction light went on 3 days later and it wouldn't shift. Turns out there is a recall on my Transmission control modual so I'm getting it replaced for free. What kind of car do u drive? I have a 2012 Ford focus. @@anthonyhewitt9397I have a 2013 ford focus se and the trans been slipping and just today it threw a transmission malfunction code on the dash
@@Slicc79 there's actually a recall on the tcm on I'm pretty sure the 2011 to 2013 tcm on the transmission. I know that bc mine is literally in the sh shop right now. It's not so much the components on that transmission that go back but the computer on it. I'd call your local Ford and ask them about your model and a recall on the transmission control modual 👍
@@Slicc79 ill find out in 5 days if it's all fixrx up. Bc mine stopped working basically all together when that warning popped up
This video saved us so much money and worry. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.. No more shuddering and the power is back in our little car. Fixed in 10 secs June 2023
Thanks it worked for my Ford Ecosport 2016 , it was showing some jerks when revesing and sometimes stopped to roundabout or traffic lights then accelerate , by doing that method it showed transmission ready and the issue finished, thanks.
Thank you. My focus was slipping and jerking. Did this and she’s back to her old self.

Really no freaking way about to try this right now. Mine is shifting so rough
My car would not reverse when I put it in reverse. It was just like it was in neutral. It would just gas up but nothing happening. It would go in drive but when it changed a gear, the car would jolt and make a loud noise. The check engine light was on. I found this video and did what he said. The transmission reset and the car is working without any issues. Can you imagine if I had taken it to the dealer how much they would have asked me for something that took literally one minute to fix? It works like a boss y’all. Can be just a software glitch causing the problem.
U the real mvp thank u i thought my transmission was done
Thanks bro there were so many videos showing different ways to reset the transmission in my 2011 Ford fiesta and your video actually works. My car wouldn't go in reverse at all and it wouldn't shift out of first gear but your way fixed my car man and I don't have a lot of money so thanks man your awesome.
Hey man! I’m glad this worked for you! Avoid those dealership scams when you can do it yourself in just a couple of seconds! If your car ever does that again, now you’ll know how to fix it and start going again! Thanks for leaving this comment!
Will this work for the 2012 fiesta?

Thank you, I just tried this and it works like a charm. Thanks again.😂
I had a problem with the transmission stick in neutral, just started with no warning, already had 2 clutch replacements under the warranty, Ford didn't honor the 3rd one when they extended the warranty for another 2 years. Took the car over to Ford the next day, they replaced the TCM, was still under warranty, ran good for 2 days then it was worse than before it was fixed, Ford said probably the forks because they looked worn when they had it apart, but nobody called to ask if I wanted the forks replaced while they had everything apart. Tried one of the other reset videos online has seemed to work for now, I will try this one next if I have any more issues, Funny if you do one of these online resets the transmission runs fine, so if the forks are bad, they are bad, thats mechanical, they would still be not working properly right if they are worn.
I have a 2015 focus, and have lots of issues with the jerking/ shuddering, when switching gears. I paid $2000 3 years ago for a new clutch thing, and it ran great. 6 months later, back to the same bullshit. About 2 weeks ago i got a letter from Ford, saying they extended the warranty on TCM to 150,000 miles or 10 years. I have an appointment for next week at ny local Ford dealer to get a brand new TCM installed, free of charge.
Same boat here, I’m about to swap the purge valve my car shudders or won’t start after I fill up at gas station, I’ll be doing this process on the video too
How do you take the ignition out of the key?
Gotta have your ebrake on.
Helped me out Ty sm cuz I js used this after school and stuff so fr Ty sm
So I was doing this before I knew this was a thing. An I figured out the routine n I thought I was crazy😅😂 😊
Brake ebreak on Turn off ,open door , close the door, put key in run position wait . Foot on the break put in neutral
If this doesn't work: go under the car and remove the splash shield/ undercarriage cover. Find the electrical connector for the active grille shudder motor. (should be on the drivers side somewhere to the left of the radiator). Disconnect it. Leave it overnight. Start the vehicle the next morning and run it for 5 minutes. Shut the car off and then go plug that connector back in. Re-install the splash shield. Start the vehicle and drive it. My 2012 had an issue where it would not shift into the overdrive gear and would randomly go into neutral. I did that and it operated as a normal transmission should. Ford ran a ground for the tcm through the active grille shudder motor wiring, the motor would fail or not communicate with the ecm and the tcm would not have ground, leading to all kinds of issues. Most of the vehicles waiting on a tcm or transmission could probably be fixed by just re-wiring that tcm ground but that's too expensive for ford. Ford's are great cars but the powershift transmission wasn't fun to deal with. If ur gonna buy a ford the only vehicles I would purchase are the pre 2012 focus (anything 2011 and before) , or any f150 with the 5.0 because with maintenance, those cars dont die. Hope this helps someone!
Mine’s a base model SE i do not have an active grille??? What else do i look for?
Is this good if your car Hill start light keeps coming on and my engine light on now again it wouldn't go in reverse. I think it's the control module. I want to try this but I really need to know if it will help with my car doing this. I have the same car. Thank you for your help. 2012 ford focus
Thank you!
Hey i need help. If the Hill start light comes on as you are cranking the car and want go in reverse sometimes or forward sometimes? Does emean my TCM needs reset? Please answer so I'll know if I need to do this on my 2012 Ford focus. The engine Light comes on after it won't go in reverse. Hope you get this comment so ill will know if the Hill start light means it's the TCM. Thank you so much!!
I just got a new transmission in my 2016 ford escape and the transmission fault light is on. Will this work for my car?
Excellent Thanks
I’m glad this video helped you! I have to get this information out to the internet for all the other focus owners with the problems I have had! Hopefully today went a little better for you after watching!
Thank you!!!
So why is the dealer unaware of this. I've replaced the transmission the Tcm . Less than 10,000 miles later on a new slipping and shunder again.
The other dudes video didn't help me either, this at least had the transmission ready message pop up 🤟
My car Ford Fiesta 2013 sometimes refuses to go in reverse gear does not use the reverse gear and sometimes it works what is the problem
So, it can be hard to tell with only that little information. But here we go! If it is only having issues going into reverse, I’m going to bet the TCM is failing. Maybe the reverse motor on the TCM is getting weak. But, if you are having a rough time with 2nd gear, 4th gear, or 6th gear (overdrive), then it’s either a tcm or a bad clutch. That clutch may be slipping so bad to a point that the computer stops it from entering the gear before causing damage to the transmission. If it engages and drives fine, the shift solenoids and clutch fork should be fine. I’ll rule them out but I would say your best bet would be the TCM with the clutch in a close second place👍.
Edit: Also, I would recommend changing the transmission fluid! If your car has over 100,000 miles, buy the full synthetic DCT transmission fluid and when I did it to my focus at 107,000 miles, it made an absolute world of difference. If you want to rule out the simple stuff, try changing the transmission fluid first. I noticed slippage and rough gear changes were gone and the car was a dream to drive after that!
Love you

I tried it because It was moving forward when I switch the gear to R. But now after trying this method, it won’t do anything in the R position. I have a 2011 ford focus
I love this video I'm hoping it will work. This is the second time my car has not went in reverse and it wouldn't go in drive when i was sitting at a stop liight it was like it was in nertral wouldn't go forward. Will this help fix my car? Im going on a trip 400 miles and i don't want to have to worry about my car. Its a 2012 ford focus also not as many miles as yours. Thank for letting me know if I need to try this.
Did this video work on your car ?
U rock
I have a 2012 Ford focus, too. It struggles to change gear - it feels like I'm forcing my car to go, but I'm not. It would also jerk and wouldn't reverse. I took it to a transmission shop, but I don't think he did anything because he said nothing was wrong with it. He said it might be the battery, so I took it to Advance Auto Parts and they said my battery was bad, so I got a new battery. My car is still struggling to change gear and won't reverse unless my car has cooled down. I took it to a different transmission shop and they said it was the sensor b and my clutch. Would resetting the transmission work or no?
And also, when I bought the car, the man who sold it to me said it didn't have any transmission fluid, so I never had it changed. My car is just over 96,000 miles
@@kianawaters4480 wow. This is the mechanic world…. Ok, I can 95% say that it is the tcm. The battery could be an issue but the reason shops say that nothing is wrong is because they don’t want to touch these cars. Realistically, the only place that can fix them is the ford dealership. One thing you can try is if you open the hood, right next to the battery box is the ground strap. It has a big bolt and that can affect the ground quality going to the tcm. Sand off all that paint and it might fix your problem. Every transmission in the world has fluid. These cars hold 1.9 quarts of dct fluid and I replaced min when I got my car at 107,000 miles. The transmission felt bad and as soon as I did that, the transmission felt so much different! It feels incredible! But I would bet it is a tcm problem. Another possibility is the clutch is so worn that the tcm doesn’t know what to do. But if you say it won’t reverse, you probably don’t have 2,4,or 6th gear. That would 100% show a tcm issue with one of the motors going bad on the tcm. You can try and reset your transmission and see if it helps. I know it has helped with mine and if that doesn’t work, disconnect the battery for 30 minutes and then try driving it normally again. It may work, it may not. I wish you the best of luck and if you have anymore issues let me know and I can try to help with my knowledge of this car. Btw, my car has 137,000 miles and the transmission is going strong!
@@itsjustahixon2652 thank you for your response. I went to another transmission shop and he said it was the clutch and the clutch position sensor, sensor b. I did try to reset the transmission and all it said was transmission ready and would not reverse at all.
@@kianawaters4480 🤔. If your focus has a back up camera, if it comes on then you know that the car is registering a shift into reverse. Do you have all 6 gears? Does it hold shifts long and jerk you into the next gear? You may have had a shift solenoid go bad, but I believe the position sensor is inside the clutch housing of the transmission so it has to come out no matter what. A position sensor shouldn’t stop it from going into reverse though. It should stop it from going into all gears, so that is why I’m leaning towards the tcm. I would try the ford dealer next and ask the people who are constantly working on these poorly designed cars and I would bet tcm, shift solenoid, or clutch. Clutches and shift solenoids are easily and readily available. The tcms though are on a minimum 6 month back order. I would post your issue to the focus fanatics forum and see if anybody else there(ford mechanics, focus owners etc…) have dealt with this issue before. My car has been fine but I have done a lot of research on this dct. Continue to keep us updated as it may help another focus owner with this same issue! Thanks!

So my 2012 for focus just started shifting weird and stalling and did this and it went away, but my check engine light didn't go off .The code came up PO7A3 transmission friction element. Do you know if the check engine light would go off after i reset the transmission?
Not from experience. But I do know that these fords will trigger trouble codes left and right. You would need an obd2 scanner to get rid of the light. Your focus must have the latest software to give you a trouble code for a bad clutch pack. The only true way to fix it is with a clutch replacement
Hey Justin, i did the reset and car driving great only thing is the shudder and jecking has come back it had stopped doing that about a month ago. Do i need to do the reset again to stop the jecking again?? I have the same car as you,2012 ford focus 54,0000 miles
Sorry about the late reply! Yes! Whenever the transmission is feeling shuddering or it feels like the clutch’s are slipping, try doing the reset! With my focus when I had it, there would be periods that I would have to reset it multiple times and then it would be fine for like 2 months. So I would have to do the reset probably 10-20x a year and the car was good to me! My focus currently has 152,000 miles (I no longer own it) and the transmission is beginning to feel pretty bad with slipping but it is still shifting strong! I wish you well with your focus bringing you many miles to come!
@@itsjustahixon2652 I had the TCM replaced a week ago. But the Hill start is flecking on the dash when I crack it they put it on the machine but nothing shows up this time. It doesn't stay on no engine light just the i light flecks when I crack it also. You think its ok to drive 400 miles I'm getting ready to leave tomorrow. It's jecking shudders again now since they changed the TCM. I haven't reset it since they changed it. But when I reset it before they changed it it drove really smooth no jecking shudders at all.
I don't know what wrong with the hill start. Would you know what going on the that?
@@itsjustahixon2652 oh my TCM was under warranty. It did show up bad. Thank you so much for your help the reset really works. You helped a lot of people.
@@lindaemery5379 yep! It should be 100% ok to drive 400 miles. Because you won’t be shifting very much on a roadtrip so it should be ok! If you transmission has low gear, hill start assist would be on the side of the shifter. I wouldn’t know much about the manually shifted optioned transmission. Hill start assist while driving takes away overdrive or 6th gear. Good for more power but more power is more gas. If it’s finicky, it might be the actual button if it has it. I would get some armor all protectant and spray it into the button and try working the button a few times. That method has worked for me with other buttons such as cruise control on my Veloster that recently had the motor blow. Give that a shot and keep us posted! We would love to hear! The transmissions in these cars are very finicky so that might be a computer issue but I don’t know enough about the hill start feature to say for sure. I would 100% try that first👍
what symptoms would require you to do this.....mine just stopped shifting..its like every gear is neutral.stopped shifting.......it sat for 1/2 hour..then it ran again...? i thought it was the TCm....will it work on ford fiesta..?
I have no confirmation if this does work on the fiesta. Mine would shift rough, have a lot of clutch slip, unexpected rough shifts and poor performance. I found it takes about 100 miles after a reset to get the transmission back to the way it was before👍
Mine only says transmission ready
How often should I do this? I’ve just come across your video so I will try this tomorrow as my transmission keeps juddering when going from 1st to 2nd gear and hopefully it fixes that as it’s only started happening recently. I have the power shift with the 1.6L petrol engine, at 76K miles so far
Did it fix it lol??
❤
That happened with my car today, or after need replace any part?
After your transmission has had an issue, you can reset it to hopefully clear anything. This will work for a short time, and unfortunately it is on borrowed time. The TCM’s for this car are on currently a 6 month back order so I don’t know. If this video helped you with your issue, the other people who will watch this video will probably like to hear updates on your focus! I wish you the best of luck, and when this happened to me at this mileage, I haven’t had it happen again!
does this reset the actuators? Had new TCM installed and shifting gears is bad
Sorry about taking 3 weeks to respond! This reset runs through every part of the transmission and makes sure that everything is ready to go when you shift it into gear. If you are outside while this procedure is being performed, you should be able to hear a lot of clicks coming from the transmission as it is testing the shift actuator A/B and the clutch fork. It also pulls the 2 motors on the tcm and makes sure they are in the right position. It appears that this reset should help with all of your shifting problems!
I have a situation with my ford focus the transmission is slipping on d but when i put it on s it drive just normal “im not driving the car that was just a test” cuz they told me i need a new transmission would this work?
Yes! So, the slipping is because of the way you are driving the car. My focus has 143,000 miles currently on the original clutch and it still feels great! I beat that poor car up. Brake torques, foot buried to the floor, drifting(power sliding) and the transmission continues to feel great. I notice when I drive it slow, the transmission starts slipping so try driving it harshly and that should fix it, or this video may be able to help with that!
@@mustbetrue1602 precisely! You shouldn’t smell burning clutch as I have never smelt clutch with my focus no matter what I did with it. It does a relearn because all Ford transmissions have software to learn driving styles to affect shift quality (smooth or quick for racing) and for better fuel efficiency. My transmission reset video resets the transmission computer to original specs. It is usually pretty jerky for a while but resolves itself usually after 20 miles or so
Wtffff it worked
But does this really helps for something?
Actually, yes! I notice a huge difference in shift quality whenever I reset my transmission. It will get rid of harsh shift quality and will turn it butter smooth in my findings
Yep it fixed our transmission in about 10 secs.. brilliant
I have got ford focus 2012,

Anybody want to buy a 2011 with real low miles clean car
What’s the reason to need to do this?
So, the reason that this would need to be done is when the transmission feels horrible. This includes shuddering, not shifting, and constant jerks. This will reset the transmission computer and restore shift quality, precision, and solve problems for many people!
@@itsjustahixon2652 can you define the “shuddering”. After city driving for a while, my Focus starts to feel and sound like the gears are grinding against eachother when shifting into second and sometimes 3rd
@@shanecurry3765 so, the best way to describe the shuddering for me is if you push the pedal and you slowly go. If you have ever had experience with a slipping clutch in a manual, it will feel the exact same way because the focus has a dual clutch. It may not be the gears, it may be the shift solenoids because if you say it’s shifting that way, it may just be the shift solenoids. If you try it and it doesn’t fix the problem, I would try replacing the 1.9 quarts of transmission fluid. That may help with your problem. Keep us updated!👍

Eorks like a charm but after 3 days the problem retuns 😢
That indicates that there is probably an issue with 1 of the 2 shift motors on the tcm. It sounds like the tcm is failing to me. It could possibly be a worn out clutch pack that I causing the transmission not to engage to prevent further damage. The main reason I posted this video was because my example of focus would exhibit poor shift quality and jerkiness. It fixed my jerkiness for about 5,000-10,000 miles and then I’d have to do it again. This does reset the tcm, but it sounds like you have a failing component in your dct
Yeah, I wish that worked
I’m sorry that it didn’t work for you. That must be a dead tcm. This video helps when it goes into freak out mode then you have to clear it and reset it to get it to drive. You may have the regular 6 speed automatic in the later models but not many came with that transmission. Once again I’m sorry it didn’t work for you
Doesn’t work for my focus 2018
There is actually a very good reason as to why it didn’t work on your model. Ford discontinued usage of the dct from ~2016-2018. Your car should have a real 6 speed automatic transmission and not the dct👍
This worker for my 2011 ford fiesta . Screw ford . Never buy a ford again
Just paid $100 to have someone do this for me. Smh
That is the mechanic world out there. These cars are there money makers because they just seem to keep breaking. I’ve had the trans loose power on the highway, I’ve had an oil filter spin loose and drain all the oil out, I currently have bad motor mounts, vct solenoid seals are leaking, and the list goes on. These cars are beaters with heaters! Just be happy that this reset kept your car running!
@@itsjustahixon2652 Will do! Haha
Nice! How the heck did you find that out?
I was actually in a drive thru. The gdi ticking makes it hard to hear some times. I turn it off when ordering. When I was done, I didn’t have to move yet so it was in neutral so I could roll up without having to put it in park. When I turned the key to get the radio back, it said the transmission was ready and it felt great ever after!
Why would you do it
Chantell, I was just messing around one day and found that this resets the trans. That is when I got it at 107,000 miles. It’s on the original tcm at 135,000 miles today and I’ll usually have some major problems every once in a while. Severe jerk, holding shifts to 7 grand while light on the throttle then jerk me into 2nd. And all I had to do was this and it fixed it. It wipes everything from the tcm other than it’s software. Error codes etc. it has helped me and hopefully it has helped some of you guys!
@@itsjustahixon2652 thank You
How the hell do you take an ignition out of a key?🤔🧐😐
Not working for me, nothing happens
Investments, do you have this same display and the 6 speed dct? If you have the European version, this may not work. This is a US market focus and i don’t know about the European cars. What I would try next is to start the car, put it into neutral, kill the motor, open the door, then turn the key back on. It will not let you take the key out of the ignition in neutral. Try turning on the vehicle this way and see if it works for you. Let us know!
@@itsjustahixon2652 does it work for the ford focus 2015 too ?
@@domboy8080 it should! As long as if it has the dual clutch, it should work!
work for an automatic?
So what does this do exactly ?
So, this resets that transmission control module. There are 2 shift motors on the control module and when one becomes out of alignment, it will not go into gear or quite simply when it will stop supplying power to the shift motors, you have to reset the computer module for the transmission by doing this process. It works for my car when it starts jerking but I personally have never had an issue of not going into gear
