Elizabeth Line - Tottenham Court Road Open Day

- Crossrail held another (and their final!) open day for one of their new build stations that will start running #ElizabethLine PurpleTrains December of 2018.
I asked David along to take some photos, and we discover just how long the platforms are, and that therefore it REALLY matters which end of a train/the platforms you exit from depending on where you want to be on the street.
David's full set of photos are on Flickr here: www.flickr.com...

Find someone who looks at you the way Geoff looks at long platforms.
Zyndr He’s such a size queen
"5 Months" + 3 years
Still waiting in May 2020
Dan Chaps1 still waiting in March 2130 it’s supposed to next year so excited
Cruelty discount!!! Yay!
Yes. It was originally going to be planned for May 2019.
*Corona has entered the convo*.....
Very cool. Emily was very nerdy charming. Great entusiasm!
"Don't quote me on that" - Geoff Marshall 2018
Would like but it's on 69 so nah
Oopsie
Geoff has met someone in Emily who talks more than he does. Love these videos.
9:30 Still my favourite quote (of the whole Crossrail Elizabeth line saga actually): "Intercity-sized trains in a Metro environment"
Would actually be great on a #PurpleTrain T-Shirt (maybe with the Underground trains size comparison on the back)
The Tube trains comparison btw: ua-cam.com/video/S36fHqXWKdw/v-deo.html
Thanks for another great video - it’s really wonderful to see such well made videos by someone who is not only knowledgeable, but passionate about their subject. You are an essay in how to create a great UA-cam channel. Not only that, it’s always nice to know there are other LU fanatics out there... There’s comfort in numbers😉. Loving those curved perforated cladding panels that seem to be common to many of the Crossrail stations. And of course the purple, all the purple....
Your film engendered genuine astonishment from me. I have long been astounded by the scale of Crossrail, but this film is the first I have watched that has awed me with the scale of what has been made. It is also a heartwarming record of how a human can both earn joy, and find it. Thank you and all those that featured.
I also attended this open day... at a different time to Geoff unfortunately... but I concur, the scale is astoundlingly huge.
#PurpleTrain, purple train
Purple train, purple train
Purple train, purple train
I only wanted to see you
Riding on the purple train
?
I'll drive to the station in my....little red corvette
you must be both in and listeng to puple rain . lol.
riding to peper land right.
*epic guitar solo*
"is that because you knocked down the Astoria?" savage, geoff
best gig i ever went to - to see LemonJelly - was there. Happy days... but things move on and progress!
The Astoria was a horrible sweatbox. Good riddance.
saw Sugar there - also best gig I ever saw - shame it went but urban landscape constantly melts and reforms.....!
Daniel Eyre Completely agree with you
The Astoria housed Bang, the gay disco, on a Monday and Thursday nights in the 1980s. Shame they had to knock it down for the rail. But you cannae have everything.
I see a sign in the montage that says you were 24 meters down... that's about 15 stories, right?
I think it was 15 storeys
About fifteen
Give or take... No, definitely 15
Stories for people of reduced height..... A typical storey would be around 3 metres, so about 8 storeys down
Christopher Martin you *_DO_* know it’s a joke, right?
More Emily! More Emily!
Gosh... how much of Emily do you want ?!!!?
@@stanpatterson5033 Quite a bit mate 🙂
Great video Geoff and David. Lots of great information from Emily Tibbitts too. Thank you Emily
So i have 5 out of the 9 Oyster Wallets. Am missing Paddington, Bond Street, Liverpool Street and Woolwich! I'll still be making videos (exit guides) about these stations mind, all will try and obtain the Oyster Wallets somehow in the process ...
Geoff Marshall shame I missed these open days but thanks for info
Can we expect a Secrets of the Elizabeth line?
Surely the Paddington one will be handed out at the mainline station
Geoff, when the crossrail stations open up fully, will you use your oyster card wallets to tap in/out at there designated station?
Geoff Marshall quick idea. Considering that there will be 3 crossrails in about 50 years time, do we need a new pocket sized map just for crossrail?.... to be continued in the next video😂
I love the new electric information boards on the platform barriers. That is so modern and a great inclusion.
"Is that to represent where you knocked down the Astoria?" Brilliant 😅
It's amazing watching these knowing now that these wouldn't open for nearly another 4 years! Great to see behind the scenes though, and great to have it all now - great addition to London's transport network!
"We're 5 months away"
Oh Geoff, you and us were so full of hope back then...
Since Geoff’s post of the Elizabeth Line I now have my fingers crossed that it’ll release on Christmas 2021/Early 2022
@@MatthewK421 Late 2022 would be my guess.
@@deputyVH Been said start the first half of 2022
Very good , be nice when that all open and running trains . Emily seems cool kind person 👍👍
"Is that to represent where you knocked down the Astoria?" !! I was going to say that Emily is awesome and you should get her on again, but she's clearly never going to speak to you again now.
If Emily can cope with sorting engineering issues out at Tottenham Court Road I reckon coping with Geoff Marshall on a video would be easy enough.
The editing of these Crossrail stations videos is amazing. I'm loving it Geoff, keep it up!
Is it too late for it to be named the Emily Line?
Good one 👍
please enlighten me...Emily Line?
She was that beautiful engineer that said; "Intercity sized trains, in a metro environment"! :)
you are right: it is so much like the Paris line 14 or RER metro stations... ˆ
and of course, it makes such a huge difference with the quite claustrophobic regular tube lines!!
If you’re going to oxford circus on the liz line, it would make sense to just get out at the station that prevents you from backtracking, depending on which direction you’re travelling in (so TCR Dean St if coming from the east, and east Bond St if coming from the west)
Approach depends on which end of the train you got on at - if in the middle then yes you’re right. Otherwise you might have a 250m walk just to get to the right end of the platform.
Or u could change to the central line to avoid walking
Hi Geoff. I just wanted to say thanks for another great video. We here on the Isle of Wight were responsible for all the signage on TCR and its wonderful seeing it all installed! Keep up the great work :)
this is by far your best one yet. great stuff.
I had my first kiss at the Astoria..... good old days
your editing gets better and better with every video Geoff! Super watchable
Can't wait for the new line to open!
Omg anton
One month to go! Can’t WAIT until it opens!!!!
Well that didn't happen 😐
Amazing video, I like the boarding screens. Can't wait to try crossrail!
Excellent video, as always; thank you. It looks an incredible station. I look forward to seeing it when it's open.
My dad was a lead engineer on building this!
When both stations (Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street) are in use, you and someone else could race to Oxford Circus, starting in the train. Bond Street might be closer, but the increased duration on the line could make a difference.
Geoff, you should do a cover version of Prince's Purple Rain, only call it Purple Train!!!!
Great video I went yesterday too the scale is just amazing!
Loving the LNER ad at the start lol
Hi Geoff I ordered a purple train class 345 t shirt for the opening day I’ll be there I hope I see you I love your Elizabeth Line videos your the best UA-camr I’ve ever known I’ve even created a song about crossrail but I’m not putting it on UA-cam as I don’t feel safe what does bombardier do? Matt mcveigh
Your mate has an Eastfield Tshirt - huge respect 👍🏾
4 years later it’s finally operating… great video. 👍
Geoff the benches on the Overground section to Shenfield are Purple
Good to see this station open - this is one I have seen being constructed
I like your videos. I did not know that there have been open day’s for the stations. Keep up the good work.
Hey Geoff how are you doing today I’m gonna be on the amazing Elizabeth Line on the 24th of this month I’m such a huge fan of you I love your Elizabeth Line videos they mean the whole world to me I was on the Elizabeth Line from Hayes and harlington to Paddington today and I now have my purple train T Shirt and I personally think your even better than amazing I hopefully will see you on the first day of passenger service on the Elizabeth Line from Paddington to Abbey Wood Matt Mcveigh
Still makes me sad to see The Astoria gone.
Me too, saw some of my favourite bands there over the years
Roll on autumn 2019
Summer 2021*
Actually, after this co-op with David we come to appreciate Jeff's great photographers view when filming!! Amazing colab!!
these videos have made me so excited to go on the Elizabeth line once it’s open! the stations and platforms look wonderful
Some well fancy editing in this one. NOICE!
It is going to be so much fun when CrossElizPurp finally opens!
I used to work in a building in Great Chapel Street, that was demolished to build this.
I know the delay is outrageous but I'm still really excited for Crossrail. It will be a serious step change for London similar to the RER in Paris. Crossrail 2 will be similarly transformative. Crossrail 1.5 (Thameslink) needs to appear at least partly on the tube map as it serves a similar purpose to Crossrail 2 but isn't recognised in the same way as the others because it's less glamorous. Will there be a Crossrail 3? I don't know. Perhaps South West to South East London via Croydon?
'Put my Oranges on'....great line just like the line itself...
It’s kinda sad how they fit the glass wall between the tracks and the platform edge. I see why they’ve done it, but it loses the tube charm of the wall of wind you can feel as a train approaches.
On the Elizabeth Line at custom house there is no Platform edge screens
As long as the air is the same. I love the air down there
@@satyris410 they'd install AC
Geoff, you keep saying the E word. Remember, Crossrail means Crossrail.
John (the man in the hat).
or the Russians?
I thought it was named for Will's Gran...
Why arent Bond Street, Liverpool Street, Paddington not having open days? Cuz im getting pissed already!
I can't wait to go back to London and see these stations.
Where will you be in december? "Still working on it.........."
Intercity trains in a metro environment is no longer a novelty, Stockholm already has it in 2017
A full downloadable exit guide for all these stations would be so useful. I know I'm going to get lost and come out the wrong one. Those platforms are soo looong.
Geoff Marshall Good to know, thank you :) sadly my phones android though :(
I really love the tiny roundel at 6:45
I'm Italian and the first time i went to London, i think around 2007, was for a concert at the Astoria Theatre. I remember people complaining about the fact that "someone evil" wanted to demolish that place. After many time visiting London, and by watching your video I started to understand the reason why they demolish it
It's coming, finally!
I love the new look
Love the Glasgow Eastfield TMD shirt :-)
It's always going to be Crossrail to me
4:37 love that show! It’s good that Geoff put that on there!
I worked for another construction company that had a site right next to this entrance. We were based in the same building as the Laing team that were working on Crossrail and another construction company. I had the opportunity to do a site walk on crossrail but didn’t get a chance to get out the office. This video is the next next thing.
Love your video beautifully done great work
Bond Street should be closer I think? Look forward to the next video Geoff! Great work!
Dean Street or Bond Street conundrum - you will have to factor in the extra train travel time to the further of the two stations depending on which way you are travelling.
Hi Geoff,
I don't know if it will cause confusion but the streets division of TFL and the Taxi Enforcement branch have been using roundels and a coloured stripe in a similar shade of purple for a number of years. Elizabeth line has recently received their first two maintenance vehicles (a car and a Transit van) and these look very similar to the streets and taxis colours.
Regards
Dave Powell
I understand that the TFL Street and Highway maintenance department have now adopted a new livery with a silver-grey reflective stripe and a grey roundel, their fleet of about 100 vehicles are being appropriately sign written when new or when returned for maintenance. The Taxi Enforcement Office has retained the purple stripe and roundel but as they have only about 20 vehicles this is unlikely to cause a problem.
Geoff is such a nice happy guy!
My son loves Geoff Marshall - he learns sooo much and loves visiting tube stations, trains, and making videos! Geoff you are his idol - he is only 5! Mind I think he as as soft spot for emily too!
In 5 months time hundreds of people will be here ... welcome to May 2022 where its only been open a few days. Worth the wait though.
re watching this on my night shift lunch break when I watch most of your vids, I'm sat on a purple train and they do indeed have black and sliver grab polls same as the seats at Tottenham Court Road.
Thank you David.
Yet another Great Video Geoff. Note to self find out what part of the Crossrail Train to use on the first day at Custom House to exit at Tottenham Court Road for Work.
One Point Geoff they Demolished 2 Venues for the Station, The Astoria and The Mean Fillder.
I used both many times to see Gigs and it. Was a Sad day when they both closed.
2 years later and well, we’re basically where we were them
Funny you talk about the space in the most recent Paris metro stations, because all along this video reminded me of the RER network, “intercity sized trains in a metro environment” with a similar scale, whose construction began in the 1960s
Oh my god, its so long😏. Geoff Marshall 2018
Haven't read through all comments so sorry if this has already been mentioned....
But very surprised that you didn't mention the patterns on the glass panels there in TCR Crossrail.... it may look like a random series of dots on the glass but it is in fact a representative street map of Soho, with a special little icon for the building in Soho Square and roundels showing the station entrances!
Watching this video in December 2018 after hearing about the expected two-year delay makes me sad :(
Wait so crossrail is basically a network rail in a tube?!?
Yes...It will be a National Rail service that crosses London just like Thameslink does. Just think of it as an East-West version of Thameslink 🙂
Take another look at the meridian water station. It’s coming along nicely. Maybe even take a mini detour to Northumberland park and White Hart Lane as it’s being rebuilt for the stadium.
248 metres? Do you think is it long? In mexico's city subway sistem, there are tunnels with more than 500 metres it is a hell crossing them, For example: La raza station or Atlatico station, the tunnel between lines it is very long
The open days were 4 YEARS AGO??? That makes me feel old
I hope another old lines in London would be renovate more mordern like this Purple line
On the northern line platforms, the signs say Crossrail and not Elizabeth Line...
Dave made all the difference here, good recruiting great video, nice photo mix. I think the Chris Tarrant answer was Belgium. Have you done any videos on Mersey Rail?
Thanks kind of you to say! Geoff's vid are great without me anyway mugging my way through!
It is Belgium indeed. And there’s no such thing as ‘Holland’. Those are 2 provinces called North and South Holland, both located in the Netherlands.
I used a Crossrail train today for the first time. It maybe purple but the seats are like an ironing board. How anyone is expected to endure sitting on these seats from Reading to Whitechapel and beyond I do not know. . I’ll enjoy the seats on the Bakerloo line before trains are replaced by seating from MacDonalds in the next generation of trains.
Geoff will the platform screen doors say the destination & boarding? In one of the pics it looked like it was setup that way.
GEOFF WHEN'S THE NEXT ONE
PLEASE TELL ME I WOULD LOVE TO GO TO ONE AND GET AN OYSTER WALLET
Purple Is precious, Purple is obsessive... great video, me personally think it was a bit risky doing the summary in the middle of a busy road at the end, but worth the risk, gives it a different ending.
NOOO! HOW COULD I FORGET? I passed TCR today on the Central and I forgot to get off.
Almost December 2019 and still no running service, very disappointing
yes, of course, 2019.
I wasn't able to go because of school but at least I can watch this
You need to do the Caledonian sleeper to Aberdeen from London euston
I cant wait for this to take the edge off the other lines esp the central line
Awesome video
