    DC did the same thing with Lois Lane in 1970. She uses Kryptonian technology to turn herself black for a day so she can cover a story in the black part of town where no one will talk to a white reporter. Hard to believe twenty years later Marvel would make the same damned cringeworthy mistake.

      @@fuzzydunlop7928 It's no one's fault but yours that you're out of touch enough to dismiss that term. Way to show which side you're on while fronting that you're somehow above it all. You're like some people I've met that say, "strawman arguments aren't a thing," despite the phenomenon it's describing being very objectively real. Not to mention how pointless your offense is, as he said "epitome of an SJW millennial," not "all Generation Y." Wow. This is terrible. :p

    • @Agamemnon2

      Term was used in Korea as well. If it did not originate during that war then it might be WW2. The Marines, and Army had to liberate, and occupy, many Asian countries to root out the Japanese.

    • @fuzzydunlop7928
      @fuzzydunlop7928 5 років тому +7

      @@dirus3142 A lot of terms were popularized in Vietnam in terms of pop culture, but originate much earlier - the pejorative "gook" actually dates back to the decade-long occupation of Haiti (that all US history classes seem to forget even happened). Though slang can date back to a much earlier time the context and meaning can change and the word itself kept the same - the aforementioned insult originally meant someone of African descent but was re-used for Asians, particularly Asian civvies in Korea and Vietnam. "Slickee boy" to me sounds like a 1950's creation - my best guess is that it originated not from WW2 but from the aftermath of WWII, when in the late 1940's the US Marine Corps occupied Northern China during the Civil War in that country (another forgotten occupation) - it would be a quick jump from there to Korea and used more sardonically in Vietnam.

      @ianfinrir8724 Рік тому

      @@fuzzydunlop7928I was way off. I always thought gook was from the Korean War because the Korean word for "soup" is "guk" and traditionally in Korea you have soup or stew at every meal.

      "actually allot of conflicts in Africa are tribal in nature, ever heard of the Hutu and the Tutsi genocidal wars?"
      So, basically, exactly like us white people, in terms of ethnic groups living in close proximity that hate each other and try to kill each other, buuuut the difference is we don't bother distinguishing African history in the way that we distinguish European history.

    I mean he was never African-American but he certainly was black. That’s the issue, if skin color mattered as much as hair color this would be just a fun disguise episode. The way someone could dye their hair and wear contacts while hiding. But even if hair and eye color are also controlled by similar genes as skin color we have made skin color to be bigger deal. So you can’t just change your skin color without thinking the cultural implications.

    Was this the plan all along? McAndrews & Forbes, who bought the company a few years earlier decided to take Marvel public in the summer of 1991. And then, the most ridiculous gimmicks came and DeFalco basically went along with them, (e.g. Punisher becoming African American and a near copy of Luke Cage, Tony Stark faking his death only to come back two issues later, Robo-Cap, Cap-Wolf, the Clone Saga, the gimmick covers, and not-to-mention, several issues being re-numbered to issue #1 for a cheap sales boost). Gotta love the 90s.

    In the spring of 1991, The Punisher was Marvel's best-selling and hottest book and Punisher: WJ was one of the company's top books. Marvel even decided to add a 3rd book in '92. But thanks to stupid gimmicks like this, the Punisher books tanked and by early 1995, all of them were canceled.

    That's a trope I like to call 'insta-racists'. You do one thing out of line and "poof!", suddenly a whole crowd of racists materialize out of nowhere, usually in an attempt to make southerners, white people, or cops look dumb, over-the-top, and bigoted. It feels forced because it is. One of the most egregious examples I can think of is at the beginning of the video game Bioshock: Infinite. The very second you hesitate to throw something at a tied up black guy, hundreds of insta-hicks insta-zipline in out of nowhere like they've been hiding in trashcans waiting for you to slip up.

    I was a teenager when these issues came out. I bought them from a local newsagents. At the time I was actually enjoying this run on the Punisher, but I admit I have not read any of these issues that time. I might have to dig them out. I remember another issue where Punisher was tied across the barrel of a super gun that was being built in Iraq. At the time the news was covering a story of Saddam Hussain attempting to built a super gun.

    The Punisher has always had such confusing politics. Police brutality: bad, man with a skull on his chest brutalizing criminals: good. Makes sense to me.

    I disagree. Angel Punisher is much worse because it basically retconned Frank as tool to create demon army for Olivier. Black Punisher didn´t affect his backstory in the slightest.

    Q. Who is the realistic pen and ink artist of the Punishers comics book covers.

  • @tedpikul1
    @tedpikul1 4 роки тому

    I think that the left panel @ 6:26 depicts, not very clearly, the departure of Luke Cage's previously-seen green car, as a "whoosh" behind a stationary police car, rather than the presence of Luke and the Punisher inside the police car. The green car seen in the following panel is Luke's car.
    It does look like the penciler or inker put lights on top of the car, which the colorist chose to ignore.
    That's all I got.

    The colourist's mind was blown. It's like when the artists on 'Portrait Artist of the Year' complain they've not considered bringing a colour palette that could cope with a celebrity-sitter-of-colour... Ffs xxx

    If Mike Baron had written the entire story, it would have been his take on a non fiction book entitled Black Like Me. In it, the author under went skin color change surgery to spend time living as an African American to learn 1st hand about their life and experiences. But obviously the follow up team botched the job. For quality Mike Baron, I suggest his creator owned series Nexus and The Badger.

      Why do white people pull that kind of insanity when they to try to 'understand' black people. It would be much more productive, not to mention way easier, to just listen to the lived experiences of black people. That way you don't have to go full blackface every time you want to examine an issue within the black community - you can just fucking ask a black person.

    If they would have simply made the character a black man the way they did with Nick Fury, I don't think it would change the character much. Despite misfires like this issue, Frank is one of the best superheros.
    There is a UA-cam video of someone shooting eith their hands tied behind their back with some success.

      skunkape Franken-Castle was different I agree, but have you heard of the Cosmic Ghost Rider? It's a limited series w/Castle as GR in the future! I don't know what is in the water near Marvel to write stuff like that lol.
