Living in US for 20 years and your videos brought me back all the memories when I was living in HK. The good food, the history and the people. Appreciated your effort to introduce HK culture to the world. Thank you Sam and Keep up the good work. Looking forward to the next video.
Hi Angela, thank you for watching and for the kind words. We're really glad you're enjoying the videos, and are so glad that they're bringing back memories of when you lived in Hong Kong! Let's hope that travel restrictions disappear soon, and then maybe you can visit this great city again someday!
Sam, I am a Hongkonger and having been your subscriber for over a year to date, I just wanna say, thank you for exploring Hong Kong and bringing us quality juicy contents delving into the culture of Hong Kong, it is my genuine wish that you keep it up, keep on exploring in Hong Kong, letting more people around the globe as well as locals to learn about Hong Kong.
Thanks for the very kind words, and generally your support for the channel, it means a lot to us that the videos are helping people to feel connected to Hong Kong, whether near or far! It’s our privilege to get to explore the city and cover the culture, and we’ve got more videos coming up soon!
I lived around the corner from Happy Cake Shop when I was a kid, my father would go every morning to pick up breakfast for us, so miss that place! I went there like 10 years ago when I visited Hong Kong. Wanchai is a great neighborhood, add oil Hong Kong! Tony from San Francisco/Boston, USA.
Awwww… can’t believe they’re closing 😢 I used to get egg tarts from here! Unf never got to try those cones with cream. Thanks for going and making it a lasting memory on UA-cam!
Thanks as always Virginia, just watched your new Rainy Day vlog too- great stuff as usual! It sure is such a shame this place is closing down, glad this video brought back some memories for you. Can't wait to see where and what you do next!
You'll be very pleased to know John that there's something in the pipeline coming out on Virginia's channel! In the meantime, I wonder if you've seen our Mahjong video yet, in which Virginia chatted to us about the game and taught us how to play!: ua-cam.com/video/U7FZbWi1l1w/v-deo.html
I recently found your content but I love it. I hadn’t been able to go to HK because of quarantine rules so this is a way I can feel like I’m there. Please make more! Visit more restaurants and shops!!
Huge respect to the host who brings really entertaining contents. He's visited so many interesting places and restaurants that even we local HKers haven't heard of.
Love the origin story on the cocktail bun, all these years I just assumed it was chicken-related. Also, really dating myself when an institution like Happy Cake Shop only came into existence after our family emigrated from HK back in '74.
Thanks as always for watching John, yes, the history of the cocktail bun and how it got its name is pretty interesting, so glad you liked that part. Haha maybe dating yourself a little there John, but that means that when you were in HK there must have been a lot more amazing places like this. Wish I could have seen HK of yesteryear!
Love to see your content about the foods in HK. I know that your channel is about food, but would be nice to see content about places worth to visit as well in Hong Kong.
Very basic, very old school, but thats exactly what I love about old school hongkong eateries! So sad another one is gone! Thanks for capturing this Sam!
Thanks for watching, and - although I can't 100% confirm because I haven't seen it with my own eyes yet - apparently this place is reopening just down the street!
Thank you for filming all these 🥺 I was born in Hong Kong. I have just migrated to Australia for 2 years now, and I am forgetting these good old traditional HONG Kong Food! 😩
Hey Sam. Thank you for showing us Happy cake shop before it goes down history. The simplicity of all those snacks sounds tempting to me. Justice done to this shop and glad to know that the newer branch in other location is still functional. I will remember to visit their shop on my next visit to Hong Kong. Cheers
Thanks as always Satish, and glad you enjoyed this one! Yes, it’s a sad thing, but there newer location means that their hallmark treats are still available! We definitely recommend heading there!
When I was a kid in Hong Kong in the 1960s, my friend asked if I knew why that pastry was name the cocktail (chicken-tail) bun. He then squeezed it until the filling oozed out from one end like chicken pooping. I am retiring in the US and planning a trip to Hong Kong later this year. I should check out that place.
Haha that it very funny- maybe this could be the original reason why it is called a Chicken Tail Bun! I definitely recommend this place. It closed down, but I think it may have reopened!
I live across the street here. They now have a new site nearby. Glad I discovered your channel, you obviously did your homework in every video, with professional delivery. Your channel deserves 10 times more subs.
Thanks Ian! Yes, we've seen the new place but haven't visited it yet. We do our research for sure, and are really glad you're enjoying thew channel. More videos coming soon!
Great video, thank you Sam for making this film and we recalling all the good old days in HK during 1960s where all HK people used to eat these kinds of bread and cakes for breakfast daily. Your recommendations are superb because those 3 selections are really the most favorite items when we purchase at the Cake shops 😜. Once again, thank you Sam for telling everyone the most successful snacks business Industry in HK, which, we MUST keep! ❤️
Thank you as always Johnson, I really enjoy reading your comments! I’m glad this video brought back some memories for you, hopefully of when you are this kind of stuff as a kid! As always, it is our pleasure to experience the history of this incredible city. Thanks again 🙏😊💪

I lived in Wanchai in my childhood. This bakery was nearby. My grandmother bought me from this bakery very often. I have so many good memories of Wanchai. Thank you for visiting this cake shop and sharing with us.
Thanks for sharing your memories, it sounds like this bakery and Wan Chai in general played a memorable part in your childhood. Glad you enjoyed this one!
Keep your videos coming and passion for HK burning! Making a trip with wife and kid to HK late August to see family after 2-3yrs away. So looking forward!
Thanks for watching, and we have more videos to come soon! That’s incredible that you’ll be visiting after so long. I’m sure you’ll have a great time, and I hope your quarantine goes well!
Hi Sam, I enjoyed watching you eat. My mouth watered when I saw the cocktail bun which is my all time favorite. Thanks again Sam. Looking forward to your next video.
Another great video. Thanks Sam! Pity these old places have to close Wanchai is probably too expensive a place for it! I’m sure they will thrive in their other shop. Good luck to them…
Thanks as always Davy! Yeah, rent is a rather big expense I should imagine for these places (unless of course they own the unit, which some fortunately do). Let's hope the Ma On Shan branch does well!
Thank you very much for loving these old school favour of our home. I pass though Happy Bakery all the time but never stop for it. I will try it next time, just for your introduction.
Thank you for watching, and glad you enjoyed the video! Unfortunately Happy Cake Shop has now closed down in Wan Chai for good, but they still have a location up in Ma On Shan!

Thanks Sam for this video! Happy cake shop is my absolute favorite in HK. So so very honest and good. Miss it so much. Please say a big hello and thank you for me from Canberra when you go there next time😊

There’s one place that I really enjoy for quite a few years in Causeway Bay, called ‘東湖小廚聯威餐廳’ it’s basically a cha chaan tang but with a few more varieties . Recommending you to try out the sizzling steak, on top of a hot iron pan. It’s my favorite and also a classic for hongkonger. Agreed Allan- as sad as it is to see them go from this location, I hope that it affords the owner and his family some time off and a well deserved rest!
There are lots more in Happy Cake Shop. Cocktail Bun was one of my favorites bakery. Cream cone is an ideal sweet snack and Chicken Pie is a quick to go breakfast.
Great theme , food is everything for the Chinese. I have just discovered your channel and most of the food you presented are my favourite ,but very strangely i have never seen the cream horn in the bakeries. However in my school in England in the 70s but we were taught how to make cream horn in our cookery class.

The creak horns are not something I had seen before (I think they were a speciality of this bakery in particular). Tried visiting this place yesterday (June 2023) and found that it was closed for good. I'm bit disappointed but hope they moved on to a better place and position.
Love your videos very informative like the addres, price and taste review. Hope you can make the same video for Lin Heung Tea house. Till your next video. 😀
Hi Richard thanks for watching and yes, the chicken pie was great! If you want your fill of egg tarts, check out our video dedicated to egg tarts!: ua-cam.com/video/IghYsMsQAaE/v-deo.html
The cream cones are very close to the Japanese "korone", with the cone made of a bread close to brioche. Come to think of it, the slightly sweet bread, with a slight yellow tint, is a local variant of brioche to begin with.
I cannot wait for HK gov to do away their uptight mandatory quarantining! Until then, I will travel back to HK once again for my annual visit and try out all the places you’ve been to! Maybe a joint venture 😅🤭😉😛😋😃
I love the chicken pie. It's one of my favourites from a HK style bakery, along with a sausage bun. What are British style chicken pies like? Are they similar to a pork pie?
Thanks for watching! Chicken pies in the UK are a lot different from pork pies as pork pies are usually room temp! Compared to HK chicken pies, UK version tends to have a significantly thinner crust that isn’t as sweet- so the flavour profile is generally more focused on the chicken than the pastry. I’d say (very) generally, that is the main difference! 🙏💪
@@HongKongHoods Uncle Roger would say "No need to eat heathy, Healthy is for the weak." Heathy food in HK isn't cheap. I remember getting a simple kids yoghurt sachel in cental it was like AU$6 we pay AU$1 at home. Anything imported from a western country is expensive. I guess we can eat Steam boat with plain chicken broth.
@@dunkodownunder Haha yep, that sounds about right- Hong Kong can be super pricey- although the veg isn't that bad and can be ordered in most restaurants for cheap
@@HongKongHoods My kids a super fussy with food. The oldest only eats a selection of food (he has special needs). Last time we went to HK in 2016, he was 18mths we found it hard to find food he likes apart from carbs (bread, chips & rice). He love the Dao sa bao the runny salted egg baos in yum cha not sure if they have them in HK and of course egg tarts. The youngest is 2 so he isn't too bad but doesn't eat much but love congee.
i am glad you got there before it closed to do a vid .... but the way things are going, you might be a bit busy over the next year or 2 doing the same thing :(
Thanks for watching. I sincerely hope not as that will mean the end of many more HK institutions, but it wouldn't surprise me if I see many, many more of these old institutions closing their doors in the not to distant future unfortunately!
Cheers for the suggestion Steve, it’s something we’ll note for a possible future episode. In the meantime, an episode that is kinda similar to that covers some great dim sum in HK. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/71YsrUd4aWE/v-deo.html
too bad you couldn't interview the owner and too bad I never tried their bakery having worked many times in the neighbourhood. the cream cone reminds me of the cream bun which literally a marriage between the cocktail bun and the cream inside the cream cone haaa...thanks for sharing with us

Hey Sam. That chicken pie sure looks good. I'm surprised you didn't get the egg tart also.
Hi Richard thanks for watching and yes, the chicken pie was great! If you want your fill of egg tarts, check out our video dedicated to egg tarts!: ua-cam.com/video/IghYsMsQAaE/v-deo.html
Hey Sam. I've watched all your other videos that's why I'm surprised you didn't get an egg tart here just to compare.😄
The cream cones are very close to the Japanese "korone", with the cone made of a bread close to brioche. Come to think of it, the slightly sweet bread, with a slight yellow tint, is a local variant of brioche to begin with.
Thanks for explaining, that is very true!
Please get tons of exercise after all these loaded with sugar treats😄 great video
Haha yes, I try to jog as often as possible to avoid getting fat eating all these sweet treats! Thanks for watching!
I cannot wait for HK gov to do away their uptight mandatory quarantining! Until then, I will travel back to HK once again for my annual visit and try out all the places you’ve been to! Maybe a joint venture 😅🤭😉😛😋😃
They will end it when they are out of money.
Sounds like a great plan Yoke Yoke, hope you can enjoy the places we’ve covered in your annual visit!
I'll get fat and lazy eating all those awesome dishes.
Haha it’s very easy to!! Thanks for watching!
Hingarnya...
Glad it made you hungry!
Thank you for telling me the story of Gai Mei Bao, actually I didn't it called cocktail bun 😄
Glad you enjoyed the story. Thanks for watching 🙏😊
I need to do a trip to HK and try everything on your channel. Might take a few months.
I think that’s a great idea! Although recommend to get in some healthy meals in between trying the places we head too! 😆
@@dunkodownunder Even though youre son eats a limited selection, at least it's all delicious choices!
Hi Sam, I believe you may not find other bakery better than HK local bakery (especially such fresh).
Agreed completely Alex. Such a unique taste and so much culture behind these institutions!
i am glad you got there before it closed to do a vid .... but the way things are going, you might be a bit busy over the next year or 2 doing the same thing :(
Thanks for watching. I sincerely hope not as that will mean the end of many more HK institutions, but it wouldn't surprise me if I see many, many more of these old institutions closing their doors in the not to distant future unfortunately!
Last sunday I bought the cream cone from the happy cake shop’s cafe in Causeway Bay
Thanks for sharing! You mean the branch on Queens Road East, Wan Chai, right?
Yes
Gosh I really miss HK bakeries. Can't wait for the hotel quarantine to be done away with. The whole world has moved on!
Agreed- but they’ve just changed it to 3 days hotel quarantine, so HK is moving in the right direction!
yummy...
Thanks for watching!
Don’t care for the cream cone. Gai Mai bao and chicken pie are yum.
Probably my favorites are:
Tuna bun, chicken pie, curry chicken pie, char siu bao.
Thanks for watching and commenting. Fair enough- those are some excellent choices!
Fancy trying the best dumplings in HK. Steve
Cheers for the suggestion Steve, it’s something we’ll note for a possible future episode. In the meantime, an episode that is kinda similar to that covers some great dim sum in HK. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/71YsrUd4aWE/v-deo.html
I like cream cone so much
Us too! Thanks for watching!
too bad you couldn't interview the owner and too bad I never tried their bakery having worked many times in the neighbourhood. the cream cone reminds me of the cream bun which literally a marriage between the cocktail bun and the cream inside the cream cone haaa...thanks for sharing with us
Thanks for watching as always! Yes, the cream cone is pretty much what your description sums up!
ohhh are you not doing any more food vlogs in hong kong, been missing your new videos
Definitely doing more, and we’ve got the next episode almost ready for release hopefully within a couple of weeks, stay tuned!
crumb donuts are made the same way as the chicken bum. they use the leftovers and crush and refry them onto new donuts
Didn't know that! thanks for sharing that information, and thanks for watching!
Sky high price, this is Hong Kong 😄👍🏼
Had to be honest there 😂
There is another classic “Mexican Bun” you should try
Thanks for the tip!
Con subtítulos si puedo entender lo que dice y conocer un poco más de esa ciudad
This video doesn’t have subtitles yet, but most of our earlier videos have Espanol- so please watch them!
need that ham and egg bun.
To die for! Hopefully you can visit HK and enjoy it eventually!
I'm watching you
Good! 😂
So sad this place has closed.
Agreed! 😢
Not too sweet… the ultimate Chinese compliment for dessert things. Lol.
Agreed! Thanks for watching.
👍👍👍👍👍
🙏🙏🙏
nice
Thanks!
It's so sad that we Hong Kongers don't support things such as our local bakers which sell these iconic breads and other baked goods.
I hope you had the chance to visit this gem- the last day of business is today! 👍
Try another bakery opposite the Tsuen Wan Panda Hotel. You won't be disappointed.
Thanks Danny, we’ll bear that in mind!
@@HongKongHoods I flew back to Hong Kong from the United States just for pineapple bun
They reopened just down the road.
Yes, we heard as much. Need to go and check it out in person asap!
Was it hot or did you get caught in the rain?
Haha I think you know! 😂
It seems you like sweet stuff
I do indeed!
Why they closing? :( in my opinion they made the very best Bor Lor Baos!
It’s too bad, and we don’t know exactly the reason, but it’s probably that the owner wants to retire!
@@HongKongHoods Can't argue with that. Real shame though, I won't forget. Got photos somewhere lol
