I bought the Runt 20 for Christmas, and it has been perfect for a gig I do in a large church where we use in ear monitors. The speaker emulated direct out sounds amazing. Thanks for the demo, you helped me make my decision to buy it!
Just scored one BRAND NEW on Clearance for 850. HELLA SCORE!
Lucky!
Phillip, I stumbled on your site a couple of days ago. I really appreciate the effort you make in providing information. I am adding electric guitar to my collection of acoustic guitars. Thanks again for your work.
Thanks man, I think you're the only one to play this amp to 11 with boost engaged on the net, it makes feel happy to finally hear it with maximum gain
Great video/demo as always Phillip! I'm a fan of your channel, you always have great tips, knowledge & playing! Keep it up!
Great demo man I always love your no bull shit attitude I like how you talk about the gear in a real honest way. You just sold me on this amp I was tossed between this the pt and the dirty Shirley mini this sounds the best. Thanks!
got a Runt 50 combo. I adore that amp. Makes me play a lot more.
Nice demo. I have played this amp. It's like having an organic sounding Plexi and JCM800 in one piece of gear. Also, totally gig loud
Great vids dude! Keep rockin & keep helping the people decide on Gear!!
Very cool. I haven't played the pedal yet. That was super cool to hear.
Michael Nielsen
That clean sound has a lot of butter, very nice.
Love it ! Been looking at this, gonna pull the trigger on it ! Thanks Phil
love this amp. cant stop using it
Friedman! Love the tone of them amps! Expensive but worth it. Great review.
Great review and demo. I appreciate you comparing the amp to the pedal. The amp sounds really good while the pedal is a much more affordable alternative for a similar sound.
Sounds great! We were talking about this head the other night on the show with David. This is a good demo Phil! Cool!
They can't do high gain though right?
That sounds great Phillip the clean sparkles .High gain has some nice Bite.
Hi Philip
Absolutely love your site. Love the variety, the reviews, the technical info, etc.
A couple of months ago I bought the Hotone British Invasion and the Mojo Diamond and love them both. I saw your review of the British Invasion and agree with your assessment. But I must say that when I compared the BI with the MD the MD won out hands down! Both sound like tube amps and the MD has a Tweedy flavour and loves working with pedals. I have a Bugera T5 and a DIY MOD 101+ and love them both as well, but the MD ends up my go-to when noodling at home. I recommend you give the Hotone Mojo Diamond a go...I think you'll love it.
Cheers from Victoria, British Columbia,
Doug M
Love it! Sounds great!
Great review Phillip! I bought this amp sight-unseen after watching this and I couldn't be happier. I love this amp, sounds fantastic, amazing tones. Thanks for the great info man!
Em Alaihem it's loud. I'm pushing it through a Marshall 4x12 and it sounds huge. I really don't turn it up higher that 6 or 7. Through a 1x12 might be more manageable. Sounds ok at low volume, very clear, just less saturation
Sean Tracey is good for bedroom play?
this is your best sound to date.
was looking into one of these great demo.
I played the Runt 50 at GC the other day and loved it. I'd like to try the 20 soon and decide which to get; probably the 50. The Runt series is not hand wired, that's why it's cheaper. A friend has a dirty Shirley and loves it.
Friedman Runt 20 Head part 2
Les Paul
Sounds really good. Still head over heals for my blackstar ht1 + 6505mh Stereo rig.
Great Review ! The Runt is AGAIN a Damm Great Amplifier from Friedman ...
My "Failture" was , that i played the Dirty Shirley Combo , and after that , My World wasn´t like before ...i Wanted this Amp so Bad , like nothing else before ...so i paid the 2600 Euro (greetz from Germany)
I have it now for one Year .
They just making the Greatest Amplifiers in the World , Yes , the Mids in Friedman Amps are one thing which make em so good sounding , and they have the right Amount of Bass, Treble etc.
Also the Guitar model comes through VERY Well , it Interacts with Pedals Great .
I never miss a video.... Truthful no BS informative material for sure.... But had to laugh when he said "brown eye".. Great videos keep it coming!!
Phil have you tried an Eq in the loop at all? I did the typical V profile with mids on amp about 9oclock , treble and bass both about
1-2 o'clock , presence
12-2 o'clock , gain 3/4 - full....very nice third voice ...more aggressive but does cause volume drop ...more modern tone
sounds amazing man
Didn’t Friedman used to do the
‘Wicked Lester’ amp, years ago?
Killer vid, killer tunes, McKnight!😃
Sounds cool I’m defo looking to buy one
Thanks for the in signs ..
Paul from the UK
Ps great show
I just played on this at the Guitar Center, it's really amazing. I am deciding between this and the Bogner Atma? I'm racking my brains over here.
Nice review!!!
Since you did a video of the Friedman BE-OD against the EVH 5150 OD, I would love to see you put this amp up against the EVH LBX amp.
Over the tubes it's sounds muted on all but the brightest setting on the clean channel IMHO. The gain channel really sings. Nice amp and not a bad price at all :)
love that sound and big thanks for not only doing metal riffing for rythm :) sadly too tough for my noobish playing - aka not worth the investment :c
Great review man! I'm saving up for the BE100 myself.
Wonderful cleans
Videos are great,full of information.
Amp sounds good. Pedal sounds good. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks! I have one on the way.
Sounds amazing both in clean and hi gain mode. Am seriously considering one but want to also be able to play it late at night at whisper quiet levels for practise purposes. How does the amp perform at these low volume levels? Also, what is causing the extraordinarily high levels of hiss and buzz at high gain??? That is somewhat concerning.
Nice Demo, Sounds like a tight little Plexi with some Monster tones!
Wow man bright tight cleans
Hey Phillip, great video...love all your videos, but knowing you also love the Victory Sherriff 22, which one of these amps would you take if you could only have one for Marshall-tones, plus playing low volume at bedroom levels? thanks!
Phillip, I love your videos! Very honest and unbiased, keep up the great work. So, the Runt 20 or Mesa V 25 for a Top 40 pop/rock band? Just looking for two channels of solid tone and XLR out is a big plus on both.
I tried one of those but 50 watts. Clean was good. Dirty was kind of Marshall but less tight and maybe fuzzier.
Hey man love your videos. How does this amp sound at low to bedroom levels? I'm considering getting the combo version. Do you think it sounds as good as the head?
I like the sound of that amp.
Now I want the Runt. Damn it!
Great review! Thanks!!!
hi Phil great demo of the runt cheers, so good so I went out and purchased one and I gotta say amazed how good this little monster is, I have an original 1985 jcm800 2205 and I love this amp didn't think anything could touch it until now wow!!! I like the right and left settings on the clean finding myself more at the minute going for the left setting, I find the middle setting very muffled sounding even though I've tried a few different guitars on there to see if it makes a difference but no tried my suhr modern, USA strat and Tele but no different but not too bothered as the other 2 settings are great and the gain channel is to die for, was wondering how you set your tone settings in the vid if you don't mind and keep up with the great vids cheers ...john
Great video Phillip!
Phillip: how does the runt compare to the mark v 25 volume-wise?
Thanks. I'm trying to decide between this and the Marshall mini silver jubilee. Have you checked out the mini silver jubilee yet?
Hey Philip, thanks so much for your videos! I'm weighting between the Runt 20/50 and the Mesa Boogie Mark V 25/35 and I was wondering if you have any comments about the headroom on the 20? Enough to keep up with the band for some clean R&B?
Very responsive amp.... I am impressed.
Phil, thanks for your short but pretty thorough review(s). And short is not bad, some reviewers & promo demos-the players play way too long in between changing settings or explaining features & such. Some promos don't even have any speaking, someone is just noodling or wanking for what seems like an eternity, and you're left wondering what the controls were set at to begin with & what else is there? Same with pedal demos, they don't tell you how the amp is set up when they're demoing an overdrive or dist pedal. Sorry for ranting, just pointing out the difference between a good gear review & one that leaves you with more questions than when you started. You're a great "working man's" reviewer as well being valuable to the pros out there I'm sure. Thank you sir!
Can you please let me know what pick up that is in the bridge, it sounds great!!
Great video Phil. thanks :)
Really great revue as always Phil many thanks. How would you rate the volume? I have a grandmeister 40 and a backstair ht5r head. The backstair is only just enough for rhythm and the Grandmeister is of course plenty but Would love a bit of this. Would this be ok through a v30 2x12 for gigging? Mid size clubs etc. Legend thanks :)
Phil - a couple years in do you still feel like this is a great option in the wattage/price range? Have a Peavey c20MH which is obviously not a boutique amp that I like pretty well but find the gain channel a little bit overkill for my needs ... this seems to get much more of a useful sweep...
I'd love to try one of these. Even at $1500, its not too bad considering the quality and features. Yeah, its more than the Mesa, but it also sounds great. My limited experience with Mesa has not been good. Fizzy, brittle, flubby and all around horrible amps. I heard one of those Mesa mini rec deals in the shop last week and I just had to leave the room.
I was the 1,000th viewer :D Amp over the pedal easily, I saw the Runt earlier this week and was very impressed! How would you rate this to the Victory 22?
Hi Phillip, I've found your channel recently and love it. I am curious though, do you happen to have Alopecia areata?
What do u like better this or the sheriff or Kraken?
Phil I assume you're running it through that Mesa cab? Sounds great. Going to be getting a runt.
Phil could you do a video on fixing a neck heavy guitar??
cheers!
Hi Phillip!, talking about versatility and quality, would you recommend this one or the rectoverb 25?
That amp smokes,I can see why you like it so much.im gonna have to try one out.
Have you tried the Marshall Silver Jubilee 2525 and how does it compare to the Runt. right now they are about the same price? Thanks
Ivan Mendez ive been searching for a comparison non stop! ive played the Runt 20 and loved it. but nowhere around me has a Jubilee 2525 to try out. and since theyre both the same price ive been dying for comparisons! glad to know im not the only one out there
Hey Philip - cool demo. Which one do you prefer if you compare the Mesa Rectoverb 25 (which is in a similar price range) to the Runt 20?
thanks ...
Really interested in the Friedman. But can't stop looking at the CLASS 5 over your shoulder :-)
Hey Phillip. Which do you like better? The Rectoverb 25 or the Runt 20. I bought the Rectoverb a few weeks ago and can't seem get it dialed in. It's either too clean or too loose and fizzy. Was thinking about trading it in on the Runt. I'm an 80's metal guy and own a couple of bigger Marshalls (DSL 50 and JVM 410HJS). I wanted something smaller and thought I'd try something versatile with a different flavor, but the Rectoverb doesn't seem to like me so far.
BTW, thanks for all the great reviews!
Great vid, how would you compare the dirty channel on the runt vs the PT dirty tone?
Hi Philip, I'm loving your channel, super informative. Could you make a video that compares a really cheap modded guitar (like an Epiphone Les Paul Special II or Epiphone G-400 with upgraded nut, pickups, tuning machines, etc.) to a more expensive, but completely stock name brand guitar like a Gibson Les Paul Standard or a Gibson SG Standard? Can a budget of $500 or less dollars get you as good (or better) of a guitar than a name brand guitar that costs upwards of $1000? I'm curious not only the difference in tone but the difference in materials, quality control, and playability. And if the cheaper option is inferior to the name brand guitar, what would it take to get it to sound as good as the more expensive one?
your demos are awesome! Could you demo class 5??? PLZ
I should of asked this question on the BE-OD pedal vid, but I own the Mesa Mark 5:35. Does the Friedman pedal sound good on the Mark's clean channel? I find it's sometimes picky on what overdrive/distortion pedals it will take well. Keep up the good work/vids!
Have you had a chance to try the Runt 50 compared to the Runt 20? From the videos I have seen so far the Runt 50 seems to have much more punch and aggression compared to the Runt 20.
Video sounds great BTW!!
would this amp work in a live setting? both rehearsal and gigs? you said something about the clean channel not being as loud as you were hoping. I'm super excited about these amps, but want something small to carry to gigs and what not. plus it'd be nice to having sort of the opposite from my mesa boogie roadster.
If I had the money, I'd like to check out the Phil X Signature Head.
Best amps on the planet for the music that I play. That tone is unmistakable.
Sounds like a Marshall, back when they made great amps
Hi Philip! Nice vid. I'm thinking about buying this amp too. How does the dirty channel sound at lower volume? Is it possible to play this amp in a bedroom without attenuator?
AWESOME review! I am between a runt or pink taco with a 2x12 and a Rockerverb MKIII 50w combo. I play more aggressive, like a Ramonesy style but more technical and modern. 1 trick pony is ok here, but want really good 1 trick. Any thoughts?
How do you think this compares to the Mark V 25? I finally got the chance to try a BE100 in a store. It sounded good, but not as great as I expected. The main drawback though was that with the master volume set on 1 it was so loud I was bleeding out of my eyeballs. I wouldn't sink $3600 into an amp that I would have to play at less then 6.5 o'clock 90% of the time.
It almost sounds that it's like better version of Marshall Class 5 because this friedman amp has EL84 tubes too, but more everything compare to Class 5. I notice that you have Class 5 there too on your right, haha. :)
tell us about that strat, its killer sounding and looks amazing.
great review!
I'd love to hear your opinion on this amp vs your Boogie Mark V 25. Which would be your preferred gigging amp?
What humbuckers do you have in this guitar? Also what guitar is this? Absolutely love the sound youre getting.
Do you think you could do a review of the bugera tri rec infinium? There are reviews out there but nobody goes to any depth with them and I really don't trust other people's reviews when it's not very detailed. Thanks for the vids!
Reminds me of the dirty shirley pedal threw a clean tube amp.
How does your humbucker strat sound with a coil split compared to a single coil strat ?
Do they sound the same even though the single coil has a slant on it ?
Good idea for another video maybe ?
Been jonesing for this amp for a while! I had a buddy who worked at Guitar Center so he gave me one of his 'friends & family' 20% coupons - went to buy it, but Friedman is price protected and doesn't allow discounts on their products, at least in that manner, so wasn't able to pick one up per the 'discount new' rating.
Can you make video comparing the Runt 20 to the Sheriff 22?
Yes, please!
Yes and can we see how much gain it gets with tube screamer in front? Idk if Runts can get me enough gain, if they can I love them.
How does it compares with victory the sheriff? Thanks for the demos!!
I'm in the market for a Marshallesque amp and thought I had everything figured out with the Victory Shireff 22. Now with this review I don't know what to think! I would guess that the Friedman has the superior cleans while the Victory nails the Marshall crunch sound? I wonder how do these amplifiers compare as it would appear this is very much an apples to apples comparison.
So the treble, middle and bass controsl only work in channel 2? and for the clean channel you anly have the brigth switch?
Nice demo brother. Ditto, I bought the ds mini through Sweetwater 4 months ago and had i been aware of the 2 channel Runt coming out i would have not bought the DS mini. Along with the other bell/whistles on the Runt. BIG MISTAKE... DS mini seems loose not as tight od. BTW, I didn't see any heads up through the Namm the Runt was coming ? Thanks Friedman. Keep the great work up! Anyone want to purchase new DS mini ? Not laughing...
Hey Phil, what are your views on the VHT Special 6 Ultra? Been looking for a ~$300 valve amp with nice cleans and a good breakup. Thoughts?
How about "Things you didn't know about your SG?"
Neat video, by the way.
that will done this week.
Phillip McKnight Nice!
'SG' stands for 'Solid Guitar' . YW
TheresNoWay
Hi, I've heard these heads are quite bright, is that right? Is it smoother than a typical Marshall? Thanks
