A Video About Getting Tested Unfortunately Turned into HIV Stigma

  • A recent video went viral online of me sharing my experience of HIV bias while getting tested. In the video that is almost 20 minutes I speak about my experience getting tested and how healthcare providers made me so uncomfortable to the point that I didn't want to get tested at the location again. How their own biases showed up in their care and how it hurts and keeps people from getting tested. The video was clipped to 2 minutes and taken out of context to incite stigma.

I’ll admit the clip took me aback. I appreciate you choosing to clear things up and educate. It’s not your obligation but it is appreciated. I hope this spreads as much as the viral clip did.

I was sad that you are being dragged. I used to write for you on your blog. I have followed you for years. I was so happy to see your evolution and journey. To see a clip out of an episode get taken and then used to create a narrative that people are intentionally spreading disease is just sad. I’m so sorry

Justin, thank you. As a straight woman, you are correct, there is no such thing as safe sex. People are not getting tested between partners, people don’t know their status, and the stigmas have people living in fear due to being treated like social pariahs. I saw the post on the blog when it first went up and I thought it was very irresponsible, especially being as the person that runs it is a queer man. We all dragged him so it was taken down immediately. You are so loved and appreciated ❤

It's so disappointing that another content creator took that snippet and ran with a false narrative. I was so disgusted reading those comments, which was based on lies and stigmas they were fed.

People are still so IGNORANT when it comes to the virus, unfortunately. Regular folks and so called “professionals” ..even if they don’t express it outwardly. Keep showing up & keep spreading awareness. They’ll catch up eventually!

I agree but I also I understand in context that when HIV and AIDS started, there was severe trauma from that era. BUT to not educate yourself and be more aware is just not an excuse.

I commented on one creators page cuz they were just loud and wrong and are like that a lot! Justin has been open and honest about his journey and experiences and has taught me so much that I have started handling my sexual health way more seriously! I even started taking Prep! Thank you Justin for helping break that stigma with HIV and sexual health.

And this links to a greater discussion about these channels, podcasts, and pages that solely run on antagonism. Those who took your words out of context were being intentional. It's yet another way to justify their prejudice against certain groups and portray those groups as inherently evil or unworthy of respect. This then continues the cycle of uneducated opinions on social media. And what's really sad is people don't seem to care about authentic sources and real information. It would've been easy for those people to watch your video in it's entirety, but they chose not to.

literally something similar happened to tinashe last week. people are not taking the time to actually RESEARCH and look for themselves. these blogs/media creators are purposely misinforming and it’s so dangerous. people are so quick to point fingers, judge and shame when they don’t even have the whole picture and correct context. I saw the headlines but didn’t see your original video until today. I am so sorry you have to continuously go through this with ignorant people. all of this just continues to perpetuate stigma behind STDs/STIs

Justin you are SO brave. I have watched you from the very beginning. We all have seen you grow, what you said at the end “we still have a lot of work to do” i love the tone and energy you came on this video with. No hostility towards the people who posted those clips with those misleading titles is such a mature way to go about this.. I truly am so proud of you. We will continue to support and be educated by these topics from you ❤ I hope you’re feeling better

Wow. I'm so sorry this happened to you and it makes it worse that there are a lot people in the LGBTQ community ran with that clip for views, and It saddened me to see arguments among gays and see people say "Oh you got HIV " just harm someone in an argument to hurt others.

It's unfortunate that people can take a little bit of an article, video ect and push their own narrative without facts or context. Now a day's people don't want the full story, just clips that help them form an opinion. This will only continue to hurt the public- especially the black community. They'll point fingers and miss the message. I can't imagine what youre going through, keep your head up 🤍

People won’t get tested because they feel like if they don’t know , they don’t have it and they just spread to innocent people who take care of their bodies . It’s wrong . The ignorance of STI’s irritates my soul so much
