Referring to the baking soda and salt toothpaste,my grandmother brushed her teeth with only baking soda, she passed away with all of her teeth
My great grandmother used baking soda to brush her teeth and she passed away in her 90s with all her teeth.. Flossing is actually many, many, more times important than just brushing alone...
She probably had dentures and you didn't know, LOL
@@djmenace3646 no, I knew, I was old enough to pay attention to things like that
My dad died at 91 with all his teeth and brushed with baking soda.
Refined sugar is the killer!
*sewer system, indoor plumping, flush system: one of the greatest inventions of all the time* 🌚✔
Plus sanitation workers or garbage collectors, cleaners of public places and trash management, running water to thoroughly clean ourselves modern medicine disease prevention antibiotics and so much more
And the natives all complain about European settlers
Makes you think who's more important, a doctor who cures one person at a time or sanitation workers who keep whole communities clean and livable?
Funny how we sometimes say,”if only I could go back in time,”. This little cache of historical hygiene or lack thereof, would tend to kill that idea, quick smart! I’m so glad I live in this current era, 2020’s!
Except when people say that, they usually mean the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's or the 1980's.
I wouldn’t want to go back to anytime before air conditioning or modern dentistry.
The movies make the towns look so clean
Glad l was born after the invention of toilet paper and bitumen/asphalt.They must be the two most underrated inventions of all time.
I’ve often wondered about the smell of those lovely ladies who lived in the rooms above the saloon bar.
I don't think dazzling cowpokes had a claim to Fame to any smell good qualities ....
I’ve often wondered how anyone could have sex with anyone back then.
Probably not as bad as the sour ass old goats that visited them ...
I can't even imagine. I'd gage and throw up
@@johnhorton9637 Maybe they couldn't smell themselves after a rank smelling billy goat that hadn't used water or soap, t.p on their sour ass for months, bounced on them 🤔
As a resident of the deep South, the Greatest Invention Ever is the SCREEN WINDOWS! imagine life without them
I don't use mine. What am I missing? I sense a Dr Google visit coming on and by being proactive I'll say thank you to you first
As a child, we used an outhouse and a communal wash basin. Water was carried from a well or a spring. I'm thankful for indoor plumbing and soap!
Is jy van Suid Afrika?
That’s it,I’m never watching Gunsmoke again, it’s all fake 😂
Hollywood made the old west cool far from the truth.
Hollywood made what sold. Glitz, glamor, violence, romance, and fantasy.

you stated the obvious
did you google that
@@sonnysantana5454 I understand the source.
People were much stronger back then, the weak were weeded out.
Truth
Fertility wasn't the only qualification to procreation.
More people had to have moxie and intelligence to survive.
Not the case today.
Stronger smelling too lol. The ones with the worst sense of smell, probably survived the longest.
@@micker9830 old smelly's
Really? Because the average life expectancy in the 1800s varied by region, but was generally less than 40 years.
water was a valuable commodity , hygiene in the old days was not a common practice
My favorite: when movies set in this time, or earlier (sometimes centuries earlier) and the people look like models, in terms of hair, teeth, skin, and fashion.
All pretty teeth , not a hair out of place and not one speck of dirt on their clothes 🤔
Michael Landon on Little House with a haircut he got in Beverly Hills 😂
Imagine what it was like for women.
Including childbirth.
I was wondering why the cowboys didn't puke on their boots when the saloon women spread their legs....it had be really rancid stench.
@rcnelson everyone stunk to high heaven by our standards. If you didn't, you probably lived outside of town... preferably by a clean watersource. The medical thing gets me. I've heard that, in our time, most adults in their late 20s who've had regular medical visits would know more about medicine than the Dr's back then..... yikes!
As the narrator mentioned in his closing statement, we are very fortunate to have the ability to practice good hygiene today. So grateful to all who came before us and helped to blaze the trail.
There are always drawbacks. Good hygiene also leads to a compromised immune system.
Some cowboys were obsessed for cleanliness and would even take two or three baths a year!
🤣🤣🤣
On their birthday and Christmas!
Now I know why cowboys were always in a bad mood!😂
Yeah..they were just being dandies
@@thomasformanek465 whether they needed it or not!
Yet, for the most part, they lived through it all and here we are.
Lived short lives, yes.
@@nelson66190 That was just life during that part of world history, not just ours.
The things Matt Dillon never told us about living in Dodge City.
And yet, he was always shown to be wearing the same clothes in nearly every episode!
@@hiwayman981 Festus too!
Ben charthwright too
@@James-ju3ok Haha, yes! Old West hygiene horrors were present on the Ponderosa as well! And Little Joe with that green jacket all of those years...tell me that thing ever got washed!
@@hiwayman981 He was always groomed and clean on Little House on the Prairie too.
Just finished having dinner and this was recommended to me. Why oh why did I watched?
The cowboys were idolized in Hollywood films. John Wayne's teeth and attire were consistently clean and vibrant, while the women appeared fresh with flawless makeup. LOL
Imagine the horrible smell
Like medieval hygiene old west
Hi, WOW!!!!! Those were the good old days!!!!!!!!!!!
You mean to tell me The Big Valley and Bonanza was misleading us!
Someone used to modern conveniences would not last too long in those conditions.
You hear people talk about how tough they have it and life is so hard. No, hard is having to go shoot your supper because they're isn't anything in the fridge. Because they're isn't any fridge.
And also having to use your imagination when pulling the rod. They didn't have playboy or internet back then. So mashing the monster required imagination
So basically how people from India live today!
Or skidrow
Ahh," the good ole' days". History always looks more rosy than it actually was.
Excellent! The artwork is beyond great!
Sounds like most of LA n SF
Skid row for sure.
😂😂😂
Great video. I also wondered about the hygiene in those times, actually in all eras.
I remember reading a book called "The Good ol' Days, they were Terrible."
But the one thing you're forgetting, your sense of smell would be used to it, and a strong perfume would make you nuts faster. Africa doesn't have a lot of deodorant, but they don't really stink that bad. When I asked my Dad, a doctor about it he said, "It's because their diets are natural, not filled with preservatives, and sugars" Maybe we need to look a little closer at that little fact. Maybe natural things is better than the advertisers want you to know. After all, they want to sell you something.
Wow, you just de-glamorized the old West for me.
Helliewood glamerized it. The same can be said of the kings and their court yards ...
Now we know where sweet corn came from 🤫
If you ever got sick you were pretty screwed.
"You have died of dysentery."
Yep. Appendicitis was terrible.
hi from england, i never see this in the John Wayne films or Randolph Scott films
England had its own dirty problems in that era as well!
And with a name like stink stank he very familiar with filth all over the world
...we stand on the shoulders of giants!
When I don't bathe like I should, I can count on jock itch, and I don't know what I would do without anti-fungal cream. I guess I would have died from that alone back then.
Bet it smelled like a modern day city bus. Some people still do not practice good hygiene
Even the worse bus is nothing like those day.
These AI Images are wild.
4:52 i dunno what's worse, the guy spittin' up a small lake, or the guy on the right walkin' around with his ass hangin' out!

Where the heck did you get the artwork for this video? It's great!
Actually, it's lousy. Very unauthentic. Take a look at some photographs sometime.
@@formwiz7096 I think you can say the same for the majority of art. Yet people still like it for some reason.
I missed nothing. A filthy body smells awful, male or female.

Despite fantasizing about being a cowboy sometimes, ALL of these issues are ALWAYS on my mind & what snaps me back into reality. I remember hearing a comedian &/or radio personality saying that if it was a time before penicillin then no thank you!
Despite all of the diseases & terrible hygiene, the human species still continued to grow @ a fast rate. This is because while NOW many of these issues would kill many of us it is because we have gotten “soft.” Our immune systems no longer NEED to protect us against what it once did & so NOW wouldn’t be able to handle what our bodies once were able to.
I ain’t gonna lie, I know it’s far from even close to the same thing, but I feel like playing some “Red Dead Redemption 2” now!
I agree... except for the Red Dead Redemption part.
Id be like "yeah I'm not time traveling to be with my knight and shining armour"
4:53 wtf lol
These images are amazing!
Created by AI I suspect.
It looks like the streets of LA
Or Baltimore, chicongo, Denver, Philadelphia
Great Scott!! What is it Doc??? Marty! My coc* needs to go back in time! LOL Aloha~~ from Hawaii~~ 🍍🤙🤙
The cowboy's who chewed tobacco was the first Beatle Juice
Any town of any real size had public baths. The girls at the local house of ill repute could be kind of fussy that way. Boar's bristles were good to clean the teeth, nice and stiff.
Looks like some of the cities in Califunny
Matt dillon's teeth looked pretty good 😅
Yep...or look at Paul Newman and Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. They had perfect hair and teeth.
You say this like it's a bad thing? Heck, ain't changed much around here....
Still , the folks were much healthier then than today ... Free of plastics, chemicals or radiation . Clean water streams, creeks and lakes. Hard and rugged lifestyle, but highly rewarding where modesty, scarcity and simple small things made everyone filled with joy of life
No they weren't. Lifespans were short, childhood mortality was very high, teeth were pulled vs. repaired, surgeries for even common events of today were unknown. Broken limbs often meant lifelong deformities. Mental health issues were rife and masked with alcohol. Zero worker protections against hazardous environments. People often had several children knowing that some wouldn't make it to early adulthood. Visit any cemetery from the 1800's....very common to see mothers buried next to newborns because of difficulties during birth.
Again, people were much healthier than today , due to natural selection and survival of the fittest ... Many of our ancestors never got sick during their entire life... Yes , lifespan was shorter due to hard work and lifestyle , but general mental health was far far better than today. People were modest, warm hearted, content with the smallest things, religious, and above all, full of love for the neighbour . Cancer , refined sugar, processed food, environmental radiation, tooth decay, obesity, pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, ozone layer holes, unpredictable weather tantrums and gremlins... all were almost unknown categories
@@sonjavukoja4936 Again, you're wrong. You have zero data to support that many of our ancestors never got sick. Of course, they did..much was just undiagnosed. Child mortality in 1860 was 343 per thousand, which meant that 343 children out of a thousand never saw age 5. Average lifespan in 1860 was just shy of 40. That's a poor metric of success. You have no data to support that mental health was far far better--you're simply making it up. "full of love for their neighbor" You really need to do some reading of life in the American West. Start with the Meadows Massacre of 1857. The weather tantrums? What are you even talking about?
I can imagine the aromas all over, and people very likely made pigs smell good.
U covered it fairly well, but U forgot about the Cowboy's love life often involved animals, AND, other cowboys( Brokeback Mtn wasn't just a racy, risque' movie) Syphylis was known to be spread from sheep/goats centuries prior. Add poor hygiene w/Beastiality, & U get a mess. Bath-tubs were considered so un-hygienic up until 1920's, that one was required to have doctor's orders( in some cities) and grapevine rumors may have carried it farther into rural areas. Also, sepsis( blood poisoning/infection was leading cause of deaths during Civil War). I, personally, have known of "out-houses" still in use in 2009. So, humans are not as clean as we want to believe. My wife retired as a house-keeper in dorms of large, well-known university in 2018. And the stories she related to me, underscores that as a human race, we haven't even gotten close to clean habits!!!
I bet those college boys kept her busy !
Especially when Dubai porta potties are still occurring
I’d imagine oral sex was out of the question, but I would probably be wrong.
Ewwwww…….the horror!
Yep. Probably the reason most of the sex was just standing up, brief and anonymous.
I suppose the "decent" crowd back then wore their clothes at all times, including procreation.
James Arness approves of this video.
We have been so insulated from this very thing. Just cross the rio grande and keep heading south and see it in real time. Modern day Americans really don't have a clue how they have it.
Interesting much of this i didnt know.
Yes, hygiene wasn't what it is now, nor should we be surprised. For example until the Listerine company came along no one was at all aware of the word "halitosis"
Corn cobs to wipe your a$$ ? Lol
My uncle grew up in Texas, and said you would rinse the corn cob before you left. (I think this was his at-home privy).
Uhh😳yeaaaah, i would like all my child dreams back please, thank you...🙏😉👍
It wasn't just the wild and wooly West, many towns back east had similar problems, even thriving and modern N.Y.C. had hygienic problems with their streets being littered with horse manure and horse carcasses that may lay there for days before removal, and pigs that freely roamed the streets!
Glad i waited until 1970s to go out west instead of 1870s
Aww I can never watch a john wayne film in the same light again.
No pit stick. Yikes!
Man, you just gotta love the era of misinformation 😅
Does not seem like times have changed much!
Zang. It's a wonder we made it to the 21st century.
Not to mention their dentistry. You should see the tools they used back then. I wouldn't wish anybody a toothache back then.🤣
People weren’t repulsed by it back then because it was like that for almost everyone. Only the very rich had good hygiene. Obviously, we would be appalled now but we’re used to everyone being sanitary now.
Yes, most of that is true, but they were a lot cleaner than you think. I have a lot cleaner than your portraying it. There’s plenty of information out there about hygiene in the wild West. Hi Jim was actually one of the most important things in them days. Same as a Roman days hygiene was very important.
No toilet paper 💀
Didn't scare off Doc Brown.
Where do i sign up?😅
So it’s like every liberal city in the US?
Mmhh!!!my neighbours
you do not have to go back to the old west to get most all of these problems. into the 1960’s some Drs did not wash up before cutting into you.
Some of this is still very common today here in the "New West"
I don't believe it. Have you ever watched Bonanza or The Rifleman. The town is always clean.
I always think the old west was cool until I remind myself of what hygiene was like.
And just think in a couple hundred years from now people will be saying the same thing about us.
In short……the Wild West was mast af
First up let’s talk about no toilet paper
The Funky Smelling West
I think the Earth was not as polluted with industrial waste and people could clean themselves in ponds and lakes and rivers and oceans
Imagine what they are saying about us in the future..like they drove vehicles, they slept for 8 hours, or they didn't teach algebra till they were in high school.
They pooed with their boots on.
Couldn't be much worse than now.
Their immune systems were accustomed to their lifestyles...so
@4:56 projectile vomiting at it's best
While people these days want to complain about everything 😂
Think of the fomunda cheese
Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven ❤
Disgusting. God bless America in modern times.
How are we even here 😂🤮
most these hygienic issues should apply everywhere at that era
Kinda reminds me of the way my ex kept house. Hmmmm, come to think about it,,,,she smelled a bit horsey!
The old West was miserable.
Ai bull sh!t,most towns had a dump
