We have very different styles, but giiiirl, you are so spot on. Because of our different styles I’m not on board with 100% of what you say, but the majority, and I even know why you say the things I disagree with. It is SO REFRESHING to hear someone talk about style that doesn’t fill their house with farmhouse or the “new” farmhouse - boho.
I knew that when the faux fur pillows went on sale at Pottery Barn, the trend was over. I’ve made many mistakes decorating my home. It’s good to know that professionals do as well.
Yeah it’s kind of reassuring that professional designers also make these mistakes haha. I bought a cheap faux fur rug from tj max 3 years ago….and while it looked good for the first month or so, it really started to look janky as time went on. It’s really hard work to maintain that “new” faux fur look. Would definitely NOT buy again
But the stools I bought are so cute honestly they look cute I think it depends how you deco I put it on my daughters room as under her dressing table hehe 😉
@Dingle Berry if it brings happiness to you, that’s great!! I don’t have a say in how your place looks, as long as it pleases you; that’s all that counts! No matter our opinions
My boyfriend has one and he refused to throw it out. I hid it in the corner hoping he would forget about it in time and then slowly get it closer to the garbage
I was thinking the same about still buying a leather couch. Leather is just more durable and less maintenance. I’ll just get a low seated clean lined frame, single cushion one in a lighter warmer color to match my esthetic.
Agree with everything especially with that clock and hideous table., omg and that lamp! You have such great taste, hard to believe you bought those things

it's fun developing your own style, impulse buys and faux pas are common. you eventually get to the point where you can appreciate things in other people's spaces without HAVING to HAVE. it's a process that takes time, give yourself the time, in 10 years your home will be completely different from what you thought you were going for.......

I'm VERY new to interior design (buying my first flat this year), new subscriber etc, learning the very very basics...but that farmhouse clock will haunt my nightmares 😂😂
Oh take it slow, haunt your local thrifts like for hospice support, YES find covers for pillows and comforters that are so easy to switch out, inserts from local fabric store, and surprisingly Goodwill to snag great FRAMES for cheap then completely different unique art or even mirror glass put inside as replacement- these can be spotted almost anywhere and craft or art stores can do the mirror or glass fairly inexpensively.
That pottery barn “vessel”. Take it outside and spray paint then start smearing dirt on it. Clear coat and repeat repeat repeat. It will be soooo much better.
I actually did that recently with 3 large vessels I’ve had for years - do they qualify as antiques? 🤣 It’s winter here and there is no dirt available as the ground is frozen (potting mix didn’t work) so I grabbed the cocoa and rubbed that on instead. Worked beautifully and gave a somewhat rusted patina to the black undercoat.

OMG Arvin, you are such a hoot! I was thoroughly entertained and screamed right along with you! lol The very best piece of advise I freely dispense, asked or or not, is to ONLY purchase what you absolutely positively LOVE! Why is simple,, because you can LIVE with what you love! If you settle on a purchase, or have to have it because its the latest trend, it will wind up in the donation pile is less than 6 months! I love a classically transitional styled home. My furniture pieces are all solid wood and upholstered goods are all natural fabrics in light colors. I love color too, so I always look to the "easily disposable" goods like pillow covers, throws, vases and small decor pieces to bring in a fresh feeling pop of color. No one wants to live with color choices forever, so why not give yourself permission to purge yesterdays colors trends from your home and bring in something lively and new. Your home always feels fresh. To be honest, I've made many design choice mistakes, but its a great way to learn what NOT to do! I love your design advice too! I watched several of your video's last night and wow, I need to do a few more things around here! Who know??? Love your channel and I really love that you dispense advise about unusual things, not just about rugs that are too small for your space. Looking forward to watching your whole series and more! That was his Shea McGee phase. Look her up and you will get it. She is a bit industrial farmhouse, a big mid-century and a bit minimalist. She wouldn't be caught dead with a piece of Rae Dunn either. You need the right architecture to carry off her look but you need it for Athena Calderone too for that matter. He will figure that out soon and change designers again.

And I don't understand how people can love living in this soulless house ! I'm materialistic, but in a different way : I keep all the furnitures who belong to my family, because I have a memory with every object. My home is like my heart aha
You are breath of fresh air! I love it that you don't put down any particular style, but instead you suggest ways to make these styles more understated, not over done, classy.. God Bless you Arvin! I'm glad I discovered you!
Troll Dolls 😂😂😂!! That photo of them on the leather sofa... I'm dead 🤣!
The design walk of shame. For me, I wish I’d never bought any useless Knick knacks from Home Goods. In a month, they look like junk. Which they are, let’s face it.
I CAN RELATE LOL. Haven't bought much from HG in awhile
Lol...so true.
LOL! 🙋🏻♀️omg this is me!! I’m such a sucker! So much money wasted
You ALWAYS get what you pay for!
So true.
So glad I've been going the right direction with decor in the our new home. Living in apartments and obsessing over trendy decor styles has taught me well!
Thank you for being vulnerable enough to admit that you don’t always get it right either. Makes me feel better when trying to create my own personal look in my newly renovated home and I look around and think .... don’t really like that at all. Thanks so much Arvin
Oh honey, you were having a moment with that lamp. I am literally crying over the fact you got a pair.
bahahaha i really was. wasn 't I?
Wait I LOVE THOSE!!
😂😂😂
I tend to agree with you, but at the sane time I think nowadays there is too much dos and donts. I love those kitsch look from the 90s. Feels homy
I also prefer that look, since it is more important for me to feel cozy and homey than for it to look perfect
I appreciate this so much coming from a professional. Let's us know our shame is not exclusive to our lack of experience. Thank you!!
You kill me. You have such a wonderful sense of humor and I actually laugh out loud. You rock.
I love how you add in what you should've bought instead. So helpful! Thank you
I’m dying...the laugh, especially about the troll doll pillows.
no trolls heree!!!! loolllll
Happy jumpin and dancin I didn't buy any of the things you bought!...
Why do I keep thinking about their weird waxy butts on the dolls?!? lmao
When I was a teenager, they were so popular. We called them dammit dolls. Created by someone who's last name was Dam.
The jacket you're wearing is gorgeous and suits you so well, super stylish and inspirational..i am loving your vids for us.. X
I had a similar clock🤣🤣 totally gave it to goodwill
Same girl, same. Those were the days hahahahahaha
@Dingle Berry if it brings happiness to you, that’s great!! I don’t have a say in how your place looks, as long as it pleases you; that’s all that counts! No matter our opinions
I think we all have at some point in our home journey.
@@wasabee8228 i completely agree!
My boyfriend has one and he refused to throw it out. I hid it in the corner hoping he would forget about it in time and then slowly get it closer to the garbage
I'd probably still buy the leather couch I've been wanting but I still appreciate hearing what you said about the visual weight and what not.
Just something to think about hehehe
I was thinking the same about still buying a leather couch. Leather is just more durable and less maintenance. I’ll just get a low seated clean lined frame, single cushion one in a lighter warmer color to match my esthetic.
@@ArvinOlano what couch did you replace it with?
In yoga we joke and say that namaste means there are “no mistakes”. Namaste- no mistakes. Only lessons…. I love you Arvin!
I was not ready for the lamp, I was drinking tea and went in my nose!
Agree with everything especially with that clock and hideous table., omg and that lamp! You have such great taste, hard to believe you bought those things
I needed this video! I am STRUGGLING with trying to incorporate my style and my husband's style, while being able to hold up to our four teens who seem to be heavy handed with all things! Intentional spaces are so important.
I just found you last night. OMG! My life is now complete. You are so damn amazing.
What I learned is Don’t be influenced by influencers. I’m sure ppl bought what you showed them, and they are now feeling badly about spending their money on the stuff that made your regret list.
I'm never influenced by influencers, thank you God. I buy what I love. I shop my own home first before buying anything 😜 But I love watching the videos😍
So true. I remember how he raved about that sofa until he was gifted the new one, now all of a sudden, "leather's too heavy on the eyes".
Influences are the bane of our existence. Follow them and burn. Live free, people.
Yeah, buy all this stuff that I have, and then I'll tell you a year later how it's a pile of junk and you should be ashamed of yourself. Lol.
this... they only make it seem like its the coolest thing to buy when they have it but we have to remember they purchase stuff for content that makes them money
Really, ladies? How about just enjoy the laughs? Lol, come on.
Thank you ,Arvin , for being willing to admit buying some mistakes for your home--you really have humility to do that as a professional designer!! (I think #10 should be placed underwater in a pool, in a garden, with lots of greenery around it!)
Hubby and I used to bet each other as to when the giant clock would appear in every single episode of Fixer Upper.
So true!!!
That sounds like it would make a fun drinking game lol
I am so thankful to find you! I just got accepted for my very 1st house and it's over 100 years old (lots of beautiful wood work and so soulful)
I look forward to working on my living space with your help =)
Your laugh is everything
it's fun developing your own style, impulse buys and faux pas are common. you eventually get to the point where you can appreciate things in other people's spaces without HAVING to HAVE. it's a process that takes time, give yourself the time, in 10 years your home will be completely different from what you thought you were going for.......
I’m crying at the final piece. AND you got a pair 😭😂
I LOVE your channel! That "scream" gets me every time. So happy I found you!!
Omg You made my day watching this video. I was laughing out loud with you and your comments and facial expressions. Especially with the 2 art deco winged lamps. Thanks for making me smile. you're the best.
I'm so glad!
I'm VERY new to interior design (buying my first flat this year), new subscriber etc, learning the very very basics...but that farmhouse clock will haunt my nightmares 😂😂
Welcome aboard! and nooooo lol not today put that dream catcher up...wait no that's a mistake too ahhhhh
Best design advice ever: “You don’t want accessories that look like troll dolls”
I’m dying laughing.
Especially when he photoshopped them on the couch. 😂
😂
Worse design advice ever: "Buy as big as possible." Please people no. Don't do that.
I love the fact that you're honest about bad purchases. Actually I like the marble dining table.
I love, love, love Arvin! His commentary is awesome, but just in case you want to skip to the chase, here's a recap:

Biggest new fan, Dawna
Can we just appreciate how dam gorgeous your jacket is and how well it compliments your skin tone 😍 ❤
So Gorgeous
Oh. Well...let’s just say that our style choices change over time. And can people please stop chopping the pillows? Why.
OMG PLEASE!
Haha
Yeah, what's up with chopping the pillows😂
I have listened to other designers i guess it's FASHion lol 😆
It's just so Granny foo-foo borderline OCD to chop all your pillows in a certain way. It's that AR vibe like people that HAVE to have their carpet in perfectly vacuumed streaks.Blagh.
This video makes me not feel so bad about all of the things I should not have bought or that don't match. Thank you for sharing!
I'm so shocked you even tried farmhouse style! You might as well picked up a few Rae Dunn pieces with that clock 🤣
Lol I was shocked too! Rae dunn drives me nuts....like okay I know that's a cup it doesn't need to introduce itself to me 🤣 great for kids though it's like flash cards.
That’s y I can’t make decisions because I’m afraid to make big money mistakes 🤦🏽♀️
Just sell it. One person's mistake is another's treasure. Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace etc. I've even made a profit over stuff I no longer wanted (not always but every now and then).
New subscriber, and I LOVE your tips. It’s very refreshing to hear that professionals fall for the hype sometimes. Not only do you admit your “mistakes,” but you can laugh at yourself.
God I LOVE when you say “nobody asked”😆👏
Hahah thank u !!!!
Dying laughing every time the “regret scream” came on🤣 ...we all have so many design choice regrets😩 thanks for this fun video👍
Love the screams!!!!!!
We all have made these mistakes, what you shared with us is good advice putting your home design together takes time. I’m a firm believer quality furnishing and accessories do not have to cost you an arm and a leg, there are so many vendors these days where you can find originals and authentic pieces of art, furnishing, and accessories. Keep your eyes open and take your time. Thank you for sharing Arvin...👍🏼😉
I just moved into a much larger apartment and am SO excited to get decorating and curating the space. I found one of your vids in my suggested videos and I'm so glad I clicked. I feel like I identify with your overall design aesthetics, and I LOVE that you're willing to call yourself out on your own BS! I'm trying to take it slow with decorating and thinking about things before buying mass produced things. I can't wait to go thrifting this summer to find some treasures! And when the world gets back to normal, I plan to buy things during my travels so my home constantly is reminding me of fond memories to exotic getaways (without any room becoming a themed room!).
Love the sofa, can’t agree with this one.
Arvin! Am enjoying all your videos and wonder how I didn't find you sooner?!! Thanks for being stylish and keeping the decor functional, and fabulous!
Oh, honey, we've ALL done it. I'm still living with some "shabby chic" items from back in the day. There. I said it.
Love your channel. The scream at the end of each “wish I didn’t buy” is funny. Keep up the great home ideas-tips.
Arvin, your humility touched my heart. So many people would not share their mistakes. You are a sweetheart!
I am with you on lamps....i have a prop closet full of lamps!
thank you
Anyone else dying over the clothes, the jewelry and accessories he's wearing? I want to see the shoes 😭
I usually wear slippers when filming ahahahaha 😂💕

OMG Arvin, I love how honest you are in this video. Some of the items that you show are just from a few months ago too. Don't be too hard on yourself though; most of the items that are "mistakes" are actually beautiful, they just don't fit your vibe anymore :) Also, yay for 100k SUBSCRIBERS!

As an artist, thank you for the comment about mass-produced art. I cringe a lot in our local decor shops like Mr Price Home, @Home etc. Many times it just screams cheap ass :-)
That scream is EVERYTHING lol!
Lots of fun to see your mistakes. I agree these are items I have never purchased or would never purchase again. The clock, table and lamps are hard on the eyes. Thanks.
Loving your videos! That dining room table and those art deco lamps just scream Beetlejuice to me!
Had to play #10 twice as I was laughing so hard the first time. Thanks, Arvin... I needed that!
1) You don’t strike me as a farmhouse guy!
2) I can’t believe you bought that pot
3) I LOVE the marble table and I’m convinced if styled right, can work as a more current look.
I just found you and I'm sitting here wondering why?? I have needed you for so long. :)
I am mind blown that you bought that clock. It’s so far from your style now! Also the marble dining table.... I have no words hahaha
I've just commented and those two got my vote as well! That table was monstrous.
Nobody asked, but… I really enjoy you, your design advice and your aesthetic. Think this video was a blast. Liked seeing how you’ve matured your style and own your past!!

Guilty on the fur. My regret hit me when my sweet lil doggo made it his girlfriend. That was the end of any type of fur accessories. 😳
😆 🐕 💗 I’m so sorry, but I also have to laugh! My mother’s male Maltese did that with a stuffed toy... 🤦♀️
