I played with los lobos back in the 80's , my band opened shows for them , at the time they were total rock stars around here and we were in awe of them( Boston Ma) they were all amazing musicians and very nice guys , they had this roadie named Mouse , he was a really really cool dude he made sure we had a good time and took the time to help us and our crew out
He passed away a while back
Heres to mouse ! A little man with the heart of a wolf !!

I went to see them last weekend in Eugene Oregon. I have to say I was disappointed. They played exactly two songs from there catalogue, "Will the Wolf Survive" and "La Bamba." The rest was new stuff and jamming. Now I understand that playing the same music for decades can be boring. But why did they have to do all that hippie jam band crap? Eugene has hippie jam-banders literally everywhere. We can see them any damn time. They even played a Grateful Dead cover which we REALLY didn't show up at a los Lobos concert to hear. In 2009 or 10 I saw them and it was wonderful. I'll never forget that show. Maybe they should stop touring if they don't want to play what we want to hear. I mean, REALLY.

02.09.2017: The Wolf is teaching the Tigress. When I was young, I worked in a dry cleaning plant for a man named Joe Rodriguez. The lessons I learned from him all those years ago have saved my life these past ten years: You keep yourself well groomed. You keep your surroundings clean and orderly. You keep your bills paid. You move with economy, and be quiet when possible. You spare your energy for the work, and then you work and work and work and work. We're going to survive, and we're going to find joy in it. Thank you, Mr. Rodriguez

It is sad to think back to the time this song was recorded in so many ways! The world was simply saner then, and musically there were so many new bands and sounds to discover! Walking into a record store and flipping through albums you were bombarded with new music that you wanted to hear more of! Now, popular music has devolved into an endless series of “one hit wonders” that spew out singles like sausages being produced at a factory. Kids today have no idea what they missed…….☹

  • @stevieray56

Written by Los Lobos members Louie Perez and David Hidalgo, and produced by T Bone Burnett, Perez had this to say....
“The song really was inspired by the cover of a National Geographic magazine. There was a picture of a wolf, and the title of the piece was, ‘How Can the Wolf Survive?’. When we started throwing the idea for the song around, David Hidalgo was walking around the room with an acoustic guitar, singing melodies or whatever, and he came up with sort of a skeletal version of the lyrics, a chorus I believe, and started a verse, and I ran the rest of the way with it.”
“If you look at the last verse of the song, it’s definitely about this movement that was happening around the U.S. then, being called ‘punk rock’ or the ‘new music’ movement or whatever. It was about a camaraderie that was going on among bands, like when a communal truck would get somebody to a gig and load out and take another band somewhere else. It was a community of young people who were no longer gonna follow the track that had been laid out by the record companies.”
    The final verse:
    "Sounds across the nation
Coming from your hearts and minds
    Battered drums and old guitars
    Singing songs of passion
It’s the truth that they all look for
    Something they must keep alive
    Will the wolf survive?"
“The other verses, and the overall thing, is about trying to sustain something that we all believed in and that we see slipping away. We Mexican-Americans saw the importance of preserving our culture, and of passing along the traditions of our fathers. So it’s all of that wrapped up into one song. But it’s about America … I always thought of myself as an American kid. I grew up on Carl Reiner sitcoms. It all becomes kind of intuitive. Stuff bubbles to the top when the time calls for it. All of it is instilled into that one song.”
In 1986 Waylon Jennings cut the song as the title track of one of his albums. “It was great!” Perez said of Jennings’ take on the tune. “Tony Joe White introduced him to the song, took the record over to him one day, and Waylon recorded his own version.”

Los Lobos were an integral part of the L.A. 'jangle pop' scene of the early eighties that brought such great bands like The Plimsouls, The Rain Parade, The Three O'clock, and The Dream Syndicate. A great time and place for real music. it makes me sad what we have put up with in today's disposable music scene.

Yeah, definitely. I remember how good a live band they were. I've seen a lot of bands that, while good in the studio and still have my loyalty, just weren't that good live. Los Lobos didn't start to sound the same or otherwise get boring after a couple of tunes. Great package with mixing it up, plenty of energy and tight.

My pops bumped into one of the members of Los lobos when he was walking his dog to take a shit, staffy, during the early 80s in London before they were big, they were doing a gig at The Albany in London. The fella was big into his dogs too and they struck up a conversation about dogs and guy from Los Lobos gave him tickets for the gig. He said it was brilliant. I remember listening to this stick out tune after my dad bought the LP. Good Times.

The title track from the first tape I ever bought, inspired by their work on La Bamba. Great track.

The greatest rock & roll band in the world. The Stones & Beatles agree. They have everything & you can dance to it.

On this day in 1985 {April 13th} Los Lobos performed "Will the Wolf Survive" on the ABC-TV program 'American Bandstand'...
At the time the song was at #87 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; the week before it was at #78 and that was also its peak position on the Top 100...
It had entered the Top 100 on March 17th, 1985 at #84 and spent a total of 5 weeks on the chart...
Los Lobos had two* other Top 100 records; "Come On, Let's Go" {#21 in 1987} and "La Bamba" {#1 for 3 weeks, beginning on August 23rd, 1987}...
    * Of course the two records were from the Richie Valens bio-movie 'La Bamba'...

I believe the album itself got quite a bit higher in the charts, I've seen a May 1985 Hot 100 listing where it was at #29.
