    Great video Brett - i have 2006 sienna limited and giving it to my son who recently got is drivers license. So we bought everything and attempted install but the camera doesn’t work. I have not driven the car much the last few years and I am wondering if there is enough power going into the unit for the camera. At point I thought the camera may be broken but I doubt that’s the case. Are you doing any splicing for the camera wires? Or bypassing something?
    Thanks in advance

      There are a few things you can try. 1st verify your backup camera works with the OEM stereo prior to install. 2) make sure the connection works, it may only work when the car is in Reverse. This can be tested by connecting a cheap TV or other display to the Yellow RCA connector on the wiring harness. 3) Connect everything to the new stereo and make sure the stereo's settings have the camera enabled and configured correctly. Verify it works by putting the car in reverse. Hopefully this will help. The wiring adapter should provide the correct RCA camera output as well as providing the correct voltage to the camera. I believe there was two options for this harness and I had to choose the one with the rear camera.

    Brilliant work, Brett ! I have just started exploring my options on the 06 Sienna Limited as the factory NAV HU screen blanked out. Upon removing the NAV unit, I see 7 connectors and 2 banana plugs going into the vehicle. Did you have to strip the OEM connectors and rewire them directly to the PAC and HU ? I am hoping for a solution where I don't have to do that. Thx

      @@chrislenfert1953 it’s only connected to the screen in the roof. No reason for Toyota to wire it back to the HU. Should be simple enough to piggyback the wires from the rca input and send it up to the HU via the skirt boards.

    Thank you for posting this! Do the wire colors vary in the harnesses from the car? From your pictures of the 12p black connector I would expect to see blk, wh, rd and gr for the rear dvd audio but they look blk, ? , red and green. Similarly for the 6p blue connector, calling for yellow and brown, but looks grey and purple maybe? Should I just be matching up pin locations rather than wire colors?

    Great info in this video. I just purchased a 2006 Sienna and want to upgrade to a touchscreen with a CD player. I've seen several on Amazon with a CD player. Could I also install a backup camera to hook up? My van is not equipped with a camera nor does the steering wheel have the buttons on the right side.

      Thanks. Yes this will work with your car. You don't need to have the steering wheel controls for the Bluetooth etc to work. You can install any backup camera and plug it into the back of the radio. You can also buy the OEM buttons for the right side if you really want and they will work with the radio too.

    I have this exact same car. I love the car but it would be nice to have updated features. Does your navigation still work or are you using navigation from the phone? Is there anything different you would do today now that this is over a year old? What was your total cost? Would you use a different unit now in 2020? Are there any other modifications that you have done to the car, engine wheels, ect.. Is there any way to improve voice recognition or does the new unit do that for you? This looks a bit out of my skill set. If I took it to a shop is there any advice you would make?

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  4 роки тому +3

      Cool, I'll try to answer all of your questions. The system has optional navigation unit if you wanted but I use Carplay which uses the phone for navigation. I dont use the RES much but I may have used a more expensive HU if I did. I think wireless carplay is the future. You almost always want to use Carplay but it is annoying having to plug in a phone every time. Because of the design of the dash opening the screen is angled back slightly instead of perfectly vertical. The OEM screen tilts and so does the one I bought. Unfortunately the glare from the sun still hits at bad angles. I might make a small shroud for the screen to block the sun. I am also going to disconnect the illumination (orange) wire. I drive with the headlights on almost all the time and this triggers the display to go into low brightness mode which makes it hard to see during the day. You then need to press a menu button and a Sun button to toggle the brightness every time you drive. Other than the car play I have also replaced both auto sliding door motors and cable assemblies. This is a huge pain but totally worth DIY if you can due to the cost. You can have any car audio shop do this install for you pretty easily as this is what they do every day. Just make sure you find a competent one who knows you need the custom wired interface and can do it. Cost was HU + converter + wiring harness etc. I believe it was under $500 total. You could easily spend $800-1,000 on a better HU with more features like wireless carplay and more entertainment options.

      Brett Martin nice! Happy to see you still replying to everyone. My thought at first was I wish I knew what his input is after using that particular head unit for a while, since it was a successful wire job and HU combo :)
      Maybe someone can hire you to install a more high end head unit and you can use that opportunity to answer more questions and show what else is possible

    Hello Brett. Thanks for the video. The PAC interface is working perfectly in our 2005 XLE. I had originally tried the Metra TYTO-01 JBL Amplifier Interface Harness, but the sound quality wasn't great, and when our stock head unit went out, the rear speakers were faded out, so with the TYTO-01, there was no way to reset the stock JBL amplifier, meaning our rear speakers weren't producing any sound. The PAC RP4.2-TY11 Radiopro4 Ty11 with computer connection allowed me to force reset the stock amplifier and now all 10 speakers are working perfectly. The issue now is the stock rear DVD player (RSE). Unlike your 2006 with navigation, our 2005 did not have navigation, and the DVD harness did not have a connection in the PAC interface. I don't expect you to solve my problem, but if you've got any suggestions or could provide any help I'd greatly appreciate it. Our boys love the DVD player and I'd like to keep it working. Thanks again.

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  4 роки тому

      I spent a few days finding wiring diagrams for the car and then opening the dash and confirming those diagrams. There is a good chance that if you never had navigation that some of the harnesses are either missing or possibly tucked away under the dash. There are separate wiring diagrams for the Sienna electrical regarding the DVD player at the DVD player location. It would be possible to tap into this audio and feed it into the AUX input on the new HU. I will be abandoning the DVD all together and use the built in DVD on the new HU to push audio out the speakers and video out into the AUX inputs in the rear of the car. This also requires running a simple video cable but should be easy. Lots of advantages/disadvantages. Best advice I can give you is to grab a small old car/toy speaker and study some wiring diagrams to see if. you can identify the location and wire colors for +/-/Ground for the audio for the DVD RES output and then try to find it in your dash. If it's not there, find and test it at the DVD player, then run a standard audio cable between the two. Alternately, use the wireless headphones and DVD RES as a closed system only. Headphones are like $20 on ebay.

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  4 роки тому +2

      J Lantoria Hi. I have had a few Pioneer head units in the past so I am a fan. If I were driving this car more or if my kids were older I would have spent more money on a Wireless car play HU so I never have to plug anything in if I don’t want to. They were twice as expensive when I bought this but have come down in price now. There are also units with dual outputs so the rear seat can watch a movie while the front seat listens to music. You can also get some cheaper units now that are not very deep because they don’t have amplifiers etc inside. This might work well considering you are bypassing the HU amps to go into the existing amp unit. The unit I went with was a slightly older model. I would have gone for the newer one but this one had the rear camera parking lines and the new one didn’t. So 1)CarPlay 2) Good brand (pioneer, keen wood, alpine etc) 3)A/V input from rear 4) steering wheel controls 5) Bluetooth 6) works with existing amp/sub built into the car. This HU gave me the most features for the lowest price. If I got a better HU I would be tempted to re-wire and upgrade other components as well. This one does the job and I was able to sell my existing HU on eBay to pay for half of the costs.

    Great video. Question: with the PAC unit, can you still control fade from the Pioneer head unit or is that somehow disabled? (I like to move audio to the back for movies)
    What's a microswitch for the parking break?

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  3 роки тому

      Yes but not easily. You need to connect the PAC unit to a PC with the correct windows software then upload new settings for fade and other audio settings like bass. The HU can control other settings to some degree but this is directly telling the OEM amp to change the settings. Why the Pioneer HU can’t do this since it already talks to the PAC is a huge miss and beyond me. I left a cable attached and under the side dash trim so I can pop it out for quick adjustments but as far as on the go adjustment it’s not possible.

You can get an HDMI to RCA adapter and then plug in any HDMI device, a phone, amazon fire etc. That's my plan. Conveniently there is a 120v outlet right next to this RCA plug to power your device.

Should I be looking at what is plugged into the back of the stock radio? I'm just unsure what connectors I need to be verifying are there.

      You have to splice into those wire colors he mentioned on the black, gray OEM plug and add terminal adapters (male to OEM side; female to the corresponding PAC RP4.2-TY11 radio harness ... or male/female vice versa). Looks like he spliced into and didn't cut off the original plugs. You can just cut off the original OEM plug if it no longer serves a purpose. You'll need wiring (either 18, 20, or 22 AWG; just search for what gauge radio installers use and buy that) and terminal adapters. You can use any brand or type; he uses the blade; you can use the bullet or some other proprietary type/brand. Adding "plugs" just makes it easier vs. soldering or tying together two wires.
      I assume that the PAC RP4.2-TY11 explains what wires go to what on the unit. OR if the wires go into the Pioneer head unit instead, then the head unit directions explain what wires go to what.

      I just used a small wire stripper to cut into the existing wire without removing the OEM connector. Grab some hookup wire, strip the tip 1" and wrap it around the exposed OEM wire and solder the joint. Using a splice connector would also work, so would cutting the end off and splicing with solder or a connector. This is my preferred way to do it so it can be undone easily.

    Thank you for posting this Video, I have problem with OEM HU 2008 Denso E7007 OEM navigation radio just plain failed in the usual manner.
    Just wondering for Interface installation, if we need to retain the OEM JBL amplifier do we have to set the Volume half or 3/4 with OEM HU when still alive to set default gain (volume) by saving automatically that setting at the amp memory? (proprietary signal from HU).
    I read so many problem if we need to integrate the aftermarket HU with OEM JBL..and ended up with replacing OEM AMP
    if that is the case. I will be out of luck as my habit always turn the volume down before turning off the HU totally.

    • @BrettMartin84

      If you are trying to use the OEM JBL amp you will want to use the OEM head unit to dial in your settings. The OEM JBL amp takes a single Left/Right stereo signal as the input and it handles splitting that to all 10 speakers, front and back. I needed to use the converter to allow me to set my OEM amp and enable all the speakers. You will want this as well and you don't need the OEM HU to do it.

      @@agustiant For what it's worth I also have a 2006 Sienna Limited. I went with the iDatalink Maestro RR and it "wakes up" my factory Amp and I get sound with plenty of volume from all of the factory speakers. When I purchased the van, there was already an aftermarket HU, so I have no idea how the volume and EQ was set for the factory Amp, but everything works fine for me. The only thing I do not have control of is the Subwoofer levels. Sound comes from the sub, so the factory Amp is feeding it, but my head unit cannot control how much it thumps. I'd be interested in finding a workaround for adjusting it if anyone has an idea.
      edit: I meant to mention that the iDatalink can control the factory Amp gain, so I believe if these was set too low when the original HU died, you could still adjust with the aftermarket unit.

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  5 років тому

      It will still work but you cant adjust the fade, rear balance, amp gain, etc without the PAC and a computer. Most aftermarket amps have these controls as physical external controls. The OEM HU controls some of this like fade/bal. Vol will always be controllable by any source like a new HU but the amp gain might be too high or low to sound how you want it.

    Regarding CarPlay
    Does your phone call audio route through the Sienna speakers?
    I have a similar setup, but with JBL amp routing all the cars audio, and I’m wondering if for some reason that is keeping my phones audio from coming through the speakers?
    Also AXXESS makes a harness to connect the RES to a new head unit AV

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  4 роки тому

      Yes, I can take phone calls via wired CarPlay or via Bluetooth and it plays through all speakers. If you don;t hear phone calls it may be your head unit is doing something unexpected. It should be easy to wire a random speaker to the HU to verify phone calls are producing audio out from the HU. In my setup only the FL/FR speakers get routed as L/R audio into the amp so if you connected the rear audio by mistake to the amp it is possible music works but not phone calls as the HU would only send audio to FR/FL not RL/RR. Thats my best guess

    "You can obtain the necessary 6v+ for the factory camera from pin 12 in the RP4.2 Interface Connector 2 (Fig.3)"

      nevermind. @ 6:00 you explain the harness that you used.
      AX-TOYCAM2-6V
      The PAC RP4.2-TY11 only has the 6V power output to power the camera so that a 12-volt to 6-volt Step-Down Converter is not needed.
      The AX-TOYCAM2-6V has the plug-play connector to the Sienna (that will feed the video), otherwise, I'd have to wire it myself (RCA plug: identifying the video + and video - wire colors on the Sienna and splicing in an RCA male end terminal (to plug into the RCA female end terminal in the head unit); 6V POWER: identifying the power wire and splicing in the 6V from the PAC). One more question, sorry. Does Double DIN refer to size of opening? What is Car Play?

    • @BrettMartin84
      @BrettMartin84  4 роки тому

      "Din" is a standard opening size used in cars. Double din is 2x high. Most LCD head units are double din, older basic stereos are single din and half as tall. Carplay mirrors your iPhone screen and acts as a remote control for your phone. You can then safely use the phones functions like music and navigation while driving.

    • @BrettMartin84

      Yes and yes. The DVD can send both audio and video to the new head unit into the AUX so the speaker system can play audio or the front can see what the back is watching. Further you could play something in through the existing AUX port in the rear that would also work. I did not wire it in the opposite direction though I think I could have, sending video from the front to the rear.
