  • Video by Deirdre Forbes McCracken Mesmerizing Lions Mane Jellyfish floating through Howe Sound summer waters are the largest species of jellyfish in the world! Recorded lengths of the “mane” up to 120ft from top of bell to tip of tentacles!
This gorgeous undulating one had tentacles stretching at least 30 - 40 ft: In the summertime it can sometimes be hard for divers to see their translucent tentacles as visibility can be reduced with increased plankton production that is a result of warmer surface temperatures. Stinging nematocysts located on the spindly tentacles can stun its prey consisting of tiny crustaceans & small
fish by delivering a powerful or lethal sting.
However, they can also provide refuge in the thick of the hundreds of tentacles (up to 1200!) packed tightly under the bell for many tiny animals that are immune to its toxin. For scuba divers, the sting is nowhere a strong as some tropical jellyfish, it’s sting can be quite a punch and the pain can last for several hours.
