I'm from Huddersfield now in Southport. Its a bloody shame because your video shows what that town could and should be like. Its got bags of character and beautiful buildings with astonishing architecture but instead I like the rest of my family saw it decline so fast that we all just moved out. 20 years ago it was banging with great shops and a half decent night scene. What to blame it all on ? E commerce , out of town retail parks ? bollocks. There are countless towns and cities throughout the UK that manage to keep the high street alive, there is simply no excuse why Huddersfield could not do the same apart from we have a council that care more about digging up the roads and constantly enforcing new one way systems that was not needed before but now for some obscure reason it does. A council that unless you're of ethnic background or you happen to be a druggie will not give you a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of. A council that cares more about building a new college even though the old one was perfectly fine, BTW as an electrician ( guess which college I went to on day release ? ) I worked in the old college and saw the council spend £100,000's on projects knowing full well they were to close it in around 2 years. Kirklees council are an absolute disgrace. And what of the old college now.... google it
Crazy init. Didn't know about them spending money on a building thay was gonna close soon!...and yep, proper nice buildings but just brought down by vacant shop fronts and derelict ex shops! As you say it has all the features to be a thriving town by the money has been spent poorly
The old Kirklees college has got nothing to do with the council whatsoever, private developers in fact there’s only the old hospital still standing the rest of the buildings are demolished, Lidl is going on one part of it and they’ve started that part. As for the indoor market that’s been redeveloped as part of the Huddersfield blueprint at some point in time
I'm from Huddersfield and only ever go into the town centre if there's an absolute specific reason I need to, like an opticians appointment. It's not like a few years ago when you'd go to town to look round the shops. There's hardly any left.
like most uk towns, its totally deluded. who is going to move here to buy an old 3 bed terrace for 300k while on 25k wages. its deluded. thats why the town is dying. the council is in denial of economic and social realities, and its trying to operate a wish list.
No bad videos. Well done. See what happens when people use their initiative. At least when people see this, it brings home the stark reality of urban and social decay. You would think that the UKs two main political parties would produce details on how to stop these shops closing. The reality is a lot of these shops are owned by insurance companies. And rather than lower their rents. To encourage businesses to move into them. They would rather have them empty. Then when enough shops are closed. They can justify selling the properties they own for real estate. Shocking.
The town used to be kicking with nightlife back in the 80s, had some epic nights out in Huddersfield. Its my home town , although I choose to move away in 1990, because it turned to shit.
1990? You were on the ball mate, or maybe I was a bit too young to notice at the time. I'm 40 and seen everything go to shit from about 2000 onwards. Real shame but it's irreversable now unfortunately. I'll be off abroad given half the chance!
Empty shops due to greedy landlords asking for silly rents and the local council charging extortionate rates , that’s the problem with all town centres and not online shopping causing it... 👍
The best shops that Huddersfield had like BHS, Wilko, house of fraser, M + S, and woolies are gone now, and it's sadly ended up a ghost town like Dewsbury where i live. I know they are re developing the Queensgate Market, but whether that will attract the old customers is another question. There are some amazing pubs round there though like the two wetherspoons, the Kings head, Sportsman, and head of steam, and the Byram arcade is nice too.
At 5:47 that queensgate market and that whole area used to be heaving 15-20 yrs back. It used to be the busy part of Town. Town has gone so quiet, no one knows where its going next.

Atleast come in summer before you slate it. All shops from the indoor market were offered alternate premises. Its easy to say coffeeshops should be in the buildings but with how many there already is, they would go bust due to over saturation.
I get that. But no way they can keep up with higher rent long term which is why they were in an indoor market....and only 50% of them opened back up. I get the coffee thing to be fair....but also no need for money to spent of a food hall....hudds has loadsof food shops

All those empty buildings with the impressive architecture from its golden age of yesteryear make depressing viewing, but Smackhead Park brightens it up no end. I remember that they had a Museum at Golcar and one at Ravensknowle, but they must now have been replaced by the town itself as the Museum.
Queensgate market used to be full of shops and market stalls when it was open and many people really did go in there. I agree, they should have more independent shops in those empty buildings, there did used to be decades ago. Good video but it's very depressing seeing the town I'm from like this.

Haven’t been through the video list but have you done any similar visits to the south of England (or even in France)? Would be interesting to get your take on some other regions. Suspect that that’ this is not just a north thing or even a British thing.
Hiya Danny, Loved your video. What you called smack head park is called Pigeon Park (because of the pigeons-genius). I was born in Holmfirth, which would be a nice place to go in the spring or summer. I agree with you about Hudds, i left there over 20 years ago and while its a beautiful town it needs so much more doing to bring it up to the potential it has as a nice little town. The flat i have in Manchester has fire cladding issues and i am longing for my Yorkshire stone back and i am planning to go back and make a really nice little business back in my home town. So your video was very relevant to me and i am glad there are some units left. I wasn't business minded at all when i left Hudds but living in Manchester has changed me. Nice business work is not just about money grabbing but it improves a place and brings cheer and something to enjoy when done in the right way. So i'm hoping i will get back there this year. Thanks for the vid.
That was a great read. I love Manchester, one of the best up coming cities in the UK. I have heard pigeon park before....i should of know what was it's "real" name 🤣. Surrounding of Huddersfield with hills and nice villages is a big miss when you move to a city i guess?
Well yeah but i went to Scotland from Huddersfield, to Dumfries which has some beautiful places. The Solway coast is stunning. Somewhere for you to look up. derelict town centre buildings should be converted into accommodation, the country has a very bad housing crisis it makes sense to bring in more people to these town centres by giving them accommodation there. Great videos keep up the good content.
If you want to get a true interpretation then go 2 miles out to a place called almondbury, and Charlie and Billy are also invited, a really lovely place.
Huddersfield has been under renovation for ages. Constant delays, pointless food court coming. I don't know who decides where the money is spent but again it's being spent in the wrong areas
I was in Huddersfield 3 days ago. Bustling town centre. Lots of open shops, church bells ringing, people everywhere. We were scouting the town with a view to moving there. Just don’t know who to believe anymore. Is there anywhere you DO like?
Assume its rents are to high and not enough customers...... there is the core problem with high streets..... far to many alternatives and home delivery is now challenging that too, plus internet shopping... you're seeing the end of what we used to know as normal life.
I feel sorry for any business owners having a business opposite that park, fact is, we are all to blame for why this town has gone down the pan, the police don’t help either as they are no where to be seen. RIP Huddersfield.
Goes to the part of town being redeveloped. Says "it won't look like that" Yet all the shops are shut... Because it's actually going to look like that. Hahaha
Literallly nothing there to visit. Looks like the few people wandering about might be the last generation to do so. OAP's riding the bus or looking for a bench in a supermarket to save some money on heating. Shame, early 90s it was bustling and a great night out.
There are a few pubs still have decent for beer....but a night out? No chance! Yeh the town is just stuck now, no modernization. There are alot of old people and the thing is the inside area's to rest or get abit warm are angin also!
It is going to be food hall... restsurants.. eateries etc. The previous vendors are in other wot were empty units in town. That piazza area is to be flattened and greened.
Obviously you know they're closed for a reason?? Nearly all the shops have been moved and it's going to be a food hall. Why don't you find out what's going on before you come over.
@@johnmcnulty1679 didn't know that or wouldn't of said it in the video.....what about all the independent businesses that were there? The little shops that Huddersfield had now gone.
@@honestplacesa lot moved into places like packhorse etc but quite a few unfortunately did shut. Kirklees overcharge on renting buildings for businesses to use so it’s hard for small business owners to move shop
The problem of this town's decline is the sole responsibility of the council and it's councillors. The council has too many old councillors and too many foreigners. Neither are forward thinking and their way of making money is to increase parking charges. They lack any kind of creative thinking. The amount of shows, concerts, events etc this council can put on, especially in the summer, they could make a fortune.
I haven't visited for quite a long time, but i lived and work near Huddersfield for many years and your vid seems honest from my recollection - i always thought it has more than it's fair share of beautiful old stone buildings but they're clearly no longer making the most of them. I thought you made some good points: - cheaper business rates if they want to revitalise the retail sector; more different attractions that will give people who go there something to do. I'm not necessarily a big fan of modern art either, but our towns need to experiment with it more in the hope of creating legacy for the future.
Good read that. Yeh i dunno what Huddersfield is trying to be. There is some simple changes that can be made like emphasising the character of the buildings they have and just more hygienic. Seems stick in the mud
Business rates are set by government, not the council!!! More things to do? Former House of Fraser is going to be a leasure complex with cinema, bowling alleys and more besides. There's an escape room in the centre, a climbing centre at Aspley, Gemini Games for those who like that kind of thing, Lazerquest just outside the ring road, Packhorse is going to have a childrens play area upstairs soon, there's over 40 pubs within the ring road, enough cafes and restaurants for even the greediest of people. The only thing currently lacking is support from the general public though it's been getting steadily busier in the last couple of years.
Goes to the Plaza knowing very well it's currently in a regeneration process but complains in needs "modernising" and all the shops are empty. Goes to the indoor market, "Maybe its shut because it's being knocked down." Don't get much past you do they Sherlock? Business rates are set by central government and majority if property in Huddersfield is privately owned. In regards to the cinema, you literally walked past the development of a new one in the town centre but conveniently forgot to mention that. Did you also deliberately avoid Imperial Arcade and Byram Arcade that are nearly full of local independent businesses because it goes against your narrative?
What happens to all the independant shop that were i. There?....they can't afford rent units elswehere in Huddersfield but it's ok if you are making a food hall. Huddersfield is full of food places but again independant shops are going again.....and the amazing gravr liste buildings with shop fronts still derelict after years. ....and for the cinema, nothing wrong with the current one. Located find with an already built car park, just do it up abit and it's fine. Again it's Millions spent on the wrong things. Same mistake time after time
@@honestplaces The independent shops that were there have either relocated or decided against reopening. The council can't force businesses to stay open. The high street has changed world wide mainly due to online sales. Leisure, entertainment and dining is the way forward. Rather than having a handful of shops on each street it's obvious to have them all in the same area. Again, many of the derelict buildings aren't owned by the council so they can't do anything about them apart from potentially buying them. However, they clearly don't have the funds to be able to purchase them. Your video clearly has a negative agenda highlighted by the fact you avoided all the areas full of independent businesses and also acting shocked that the piazza is derelict even though you know very well that's it's being redeveloped.
@@benvisona4520 @benvisona4520 dunno where this i knew that is what being demolished has come from? Also there are plenty of towns that prove just because online sales and they way people shop has changed doesn't mean a grim outlook for retail and getting people to venture out. Also they haven't been relocated, they won't re-open. They were shops that needed cheap rent to survive and place where mutilpe shops are to get demand, say it how you want those independant shops are not opening again in Huddersfield....but atleast you get a food court. Huddersfield has always been known for having a rudiculous amount of food places, a food court is a joke and shows there is no care for people who have been there for a while or for future retail of shops that aren't franchised generic shops.
@@honestplaces You literally go up to a map of the redevelopment plans in your video, so you know what's happening. And if you didn't, you should perhaps do some research into the area prior to videoing.
Most councils have gone bankrupt due to the installation of smart tech in town centres, Birmingham being a prime example. Those white pylons are not artwork, they are transmitters/receivers.
To be fair from what he’s shown us there’s plenty worse than that around the country. You can point the finger at various culprits but the main culprits are the great British public who can’t be bothered to get off their lazy fat arses to go shopping.
It's like the internet shopping came along with the council rate rises and council parking charges. Slowly killed it and wtf are those pylon things, more waste. There was a time you couldn't walk into the market or through the packhorse without weaving through people walking the other way. It's just dead! Why bother spending anything trying to upgrade? Just turn it into residential. Shrink the commercial area and get rid of the concrete abominations like Queens Gate market. Build some affordable housing, ie. some new eco council houses.
Your videos are great but maybe do a bit of research First. The old indoor market is not getting knocked down. It’s getting converted into a food hall. And the outdoor market is open 4 days a week. Yeah our town is a 💩 show
If people say the most exciting and greatest thing about their town is a blooming railway station they need to visit more parts of the UK and get out more!
Of all the wandering camera snoopers on UA-cam, you are easily the worst. Here's why. You don't bother to do any research whatsoever and when you spot plans for regeneration you don't understand them lol. You fail to visit some arcades, you fail to point out ongoing regeneration works, you failed to point out anything new from the previous visit, worst of all when pointing out the plans for the piazza centre you just said it won't look like that in your opinion lol. Of course it won't, it's a drawing.

Ooh no it isn't I go to every week and it gets busy 😭
He did the same thing with dewsbury , he's got some warped agenda about slagging places off .
Assume its rents are to high and not enough customers...... there is the core problem with high streets..... far to many alternatives and home delivery is now challenging that too, plus internet shopping... you're seeing the end of what we used to know as normal life.
do you know those tower cost 250k and queengate is being turned into concert hall thing
250k!?
😮😮😮
I feel sorry for any business owners having a business opposite that park, fact is, we are all to blame for why this town has gone down the pan, the police don’t help either as they are no where to be seen. RIP Huddersfield.
It's a shame. I went to Uni there about 12 years ago and the town was pretty lively. Guessing it has gone down hill since then
You are hoping it doesn't look like that because you won't be able to try pull the town down 😂
Goes to the part of town being redeveloped. Says "it won't look like that"
Yet all the shops are shut...
Hi. We are part way through massive revamp so prob shud done this in another two years.... we hope!
What's the deal with that queensgate market?
Wats on your neck mate?
I dont go near Huddersfield now unless I have to, stick to Holmfirth
@@benvisona4520 too much effort. Dunno how to use the internet
How does whsmith keep going ?
I think that everytime i see one 🤣
Most councils have gone bankrupt due to the installation of smart tech in town centres, Birmingham being a prime example. Those white pylons are not artwork, they are transmitters/receivers.
Another good honest places video!
You been? If so how did you find it?
You got it spot on mate
@@turnerproductions happy with that! 👍
They are actually totally rebuilding the 60s shabby town centre not that u d care.
lets see whats kicking off , it is what it is ?
Lives in a Dreamworld. Must go out at 6 in the morning.
Same guy commenting about vacant shops tells you to go on sky scanner and get the holiday / flight half price. Got to love the irony 😂
Watch out for the Hart bar. Some dodgy mf'ers
To be fair from what he’s shown us there’s plenty worse than that around the country.
You can point the finger at various culprits but the main culprits are the great British public who can’t be bothered to get off their lazy fat arses to go shopping.
Have you ever been to Hartlepool?
Nah.....worth a visit?
@@honestplacesyes please do one of hartlepool!
It's a shithole mate! Lol
Kirklees council stealing all the cash... pandoor and his cronies
I wonder what the night life is like?
Need 2 go back looking 4 pints of Guinness
It's town centre that's where you'll find shops FFS 😂
Floors been done? What "floor"? It's the PAVING ffs! The ground! You have floors inside buildings!
Build some affordable housing, ie. some new eco council houses.
if only they had invested in cork products
We did one here. ua-cam.com/video/vy4-Dzw95Ec/v-deo.htmlsi=Nu8hbx54QyQOk0pt
A lovely looking town.
I'm from Huddersfield and I can tell you, the town centre is a shithole
nothing much then live there
Your videos are great but maybe do a bit of research First. The old indoor market is not getting knocked down. It’s getting converted into a food hall. And the outdoor market is open 4 days a week. Yeah our town is a 💩 show
The bar is so low for "great" now.
Tell f-block that place is dead
i see they are wasting money on stupid sculpture stuff just like derby and probably alot of places.
If people say the most exciting and greatest thing about their town is a blooming railway station they need to visit more parts of the UK and get out more!
🤣
Stop fishing and a life 😅
Just need more gay bars to keep you happy 😂
Its another West Yorkshire dump.
why you ebing mean
?
Huddersfield is a dump fact
Of all the wandering camera snoopers on UA-cam, you are easily the worst. Here's why. You don't bother to do any research whatsoever and when you spot plans for regeneration you don't understand them lol. You fail to visit some arcades, you fail to point out ongoing regeneration works, you failed to point out anything new from the previous visit, worst of all when pointing out the plans for the piazza centre you just said it won't look like that in your opinion lol. Of course it won't, it's a drawing.
👍
Totally agree with the lack of research. The condescending virtual tone of the thumbs up means all for views and nothing else. Unsubscribed
@honestplaces I think there awesome vids mate, currently bingeing them from start to finish 👍
