- The Long Dark Winter Nights. An eerie time of the year, where those other things might be closer to us than we think. They take many forms, and often appear to us on a cold, dark road in Ireland. This month, Eddie recounts the eight types of spirits and supernatural creatures that one might meet, and give examples of stories where poor ordinary folk had encounters with the otherworldly. You make a really good point Eddie, we are so brave and bold with our streetlamps, torches, and even phones now, I think most of us couldn't begin to imagine what it would be like to live with true darkness every single night. Another terrific episode. Much appreciated. Cheers, Kitty.
This is a good point I live in wilderness, and at night, there are blazing stars or when cloudy pitch black. During lambing and calving, it is a stretch of your courage to walk out to check stock with just a dim flashlight and darkness and silence.
A great storyteller, love listing to his voice, a true Irish legend.

You’re more loved than you know. My mother saw the Black Shuck and she described it to me of course as a massive black dog and it tried to climb in her bed. She was kicking it off with both feet. I knew what it meant of course. Not long after, she passed. I miss Ireland, hope to return soon. Dana

There was a farmer who lived beside me in the countryside here in Galway. He's dead now but he told me of an experience he had with a black dog. He owned a motorcycle when he was young and one night a black dog came out of nowhere and started to keep abreast of him on the motorcycle so he started to speed up and no matter how fast he went on the bike the black dog was able to keep up with him. It was no earthly dog I'd say.Then again there is a fairy fort right beside me here where I'm living so it makes sense. What was the black dog though. Thats the story he told me. It shook him up really bad he said
@@88_garnet8 Well that's what the man told me and I don't doubt him he was a very sincere and genuine man. Not a bullshiter and I would be inclined to believe it. A spirit can take any form and a black dog seems to be a favourite
It could have been a shape shifting demon, a hound of hell. These things do exisit.
My mother said when she was a little girl (1920’s) she was riding in a wagon at night with her father and a big black dog was running beside them. She said to her father “look at the big black dog running beside us!” Her father said “there’s no black dog there”. She said when you left the horses out at night in the morning their manes would be all braided in little braids from the fairies riding them.
My uncle here in County Clare said he seen a black dog on top of his mobile home that he shared and worked out of with his brothers back in the 70's.. he knew it was no normal dog and it still frightens him to this day, he is also an honest man
Reading about the Pendle Witch Trials, there was a story of a black dog, which made a blood pact with a girl, whose family were accused of practising witchcraft.
The dog was said to be the Devil, and was to be the familiar of the girl.
So, maybe your friend encountered the Devil...

Being from Belfast, these kind of stories don’t get told all that often....apart from the older folk, they are wiser than the young in the ways and truths of the world, Though they aren’t always treated as such. Unfortunately I haven’t heard many of the stories of old (which is why I love hearing them here from you) but I have indeed had some strange encounters both in the woods and on the banks of the river Lagan and in the mourne mountains, and with living in a house that can only be described as haunted for 6 months......the most undoubtedly haunted place I can imagine. I have some stories about that house I can tell.....maybe ten or more I personally experienced, but not many (if any) will listen. They laugh, like I’m making it up, but I am not, things that can’t be explained should provoke questions deep in us, NOT provoke laughter and ridicule from others. I know myself, I am 34 and of sound mind and what I tell of what happened IS what happened...No question in that at all.

@ I know you're right. You should start your own UA-cam or tic toc and tell your stories or footage 🙂
You should type your experiences of the Lagan River, haunted house, etc, and send them to the Scary Fairy Godmother channel here on UA-cam. She might read them aloud on one of her videos. She does a really good job with the stories she receives.
@@raineyday9066 that’s a good idea, I do watch some of her stuff, I thought about making videos myself of talking through those things and even taking video footage of the exact locations they happened, I maybe will in the summer, not for any sort of fame or fortune obviously. 😂 but just to tell the stories as they are pretty interesting occurrences, and might encourage others to share their stories too. I’d bet there are many, many stories that people are sitting on that they’d rather tell themselves didn’t happen than just openly tell what happened without any need for validation, but just to state the facts. Belief is in everyone’s own mind it’s not objective. Not our job to persuade people, but it is important that we tell our stories……..simply, factually and without any sort of embellishment.

@@Djurberg74 He's not "like" Eddie Lenahan, the Irish seannach tradition is specific. We all have our different ways. Mats is a genuine soul, though. Are you a story teller?
@@gillianshimwell4984 Just saw some y-t clips with Mats, he seems very entertaining and I want to see more. So I really appreciate that you mentioned him. I'm not a professional storyteller myself in any way, but I use to entertain friends and relatives at parties with old tales and such. Sometimes I've been invited to fine dinners for that reason... My dad and granddad used to tell tall tales every now and then. My granddad always looked completely serious when talking about the most improbable events in his little home village. Dad was also very good at reading aloud while changing his voice for different characters. Yes, there are many different styles and ways to do it. And what about you - are you a story teller? :-)
@@Djurberg74 yes. likewise, some family members were entertaining speakers or awful liars, and we had a sense of humour so dry dust poured out of our mouths on good days. You are a storyteller if you tell stories. I did theatre training, but when I started telling, which grew out of listening, I had to "step back down"- it's a different thing entirely. I like Eddie Lenihan because he's just talking.Eamon Kelly is a good, different type, a Kerry man I think, someone Irish will put me right if I'm wrong. Am I right to think that the Swedish humour and story is deadpan tall tales sometimes? Professional or not, you are nurturing the tales. It's folk tales, remember, not scholarly literature. Great that it sprang from your fireside.Having your dinner for it- that's very traditional.keep talking.
