We used to play bob apple on Halloween as a child in England. There were no pumpkins then,we made a jack o lantern with a turnip (swede) . We borrowed my grandads stiff waterproof mac and walked about in the street with it over our heads like a headless man. We had loads of fun and never went trick or treating,it wasn't heard of then.

Halloween became Americanised in the 90's. In the 80's and early 90's some of the traditions were clinging on. They had gone by the mid 90's. It's a shame because the Americanised stuff is just superficial junk for business to make money.

I remember my dad came home drunk one night from a pub and he sat down by the fire, kissed my mom, and said
"I have a good story for you tonight" My mom was about to send me and my oldest brother to bed but he stopped her
"It's alright. It's not dirty" and told us a story about a debtor in the 19th century making a deal with the devil.
I can't remember it but it was really interesting.
I love your stories, Mr. Lenihan

Eddie I am 26, so fairly young and we would have always observed all of the old traditions such as bobbing apples etc and stories of the faeries. My memories of Halloween are of being in my Nana’s kitchen with all of my cousins and all of us taking turns to soak ourselves and the floor, as well as trying to get a bite out of the apple hanging on a string with our hands behind our back. It was a great time. My fiancé is a primary teacher and he said most of the kids in his class would be doing that at home. So hopefully the traditions aren’t gone just yet!

I'm on the way down to Cork from Dublin on the bus. It's a beautiful summers evening and the sun has just set.
As I look out the window, the words of these stories are like the sauce on the landscape.
Adding flavour to the heritage and traditions of Ireland.

I sometimes think of how the celebration of Día de los Muertos and the Aztec festival for the dead, especially for the goddess Mictecacihuatl: The Lady of the Dead, from which Día de los Muertos arises from, occurs in the same time frame as Samhain. Two cultures that had no contact and vastly different environments agree on when their dead relations return. I find that very interesting.

Two vastly different environments that arose from a worldwide mother culture that was destroyed in a mysterious cataclysm. The dead we are mourning are the millions lost on that terrible day.

In 7th grade I threw a halloween hay-ride at my grandparents house. I invited all of my friends at school, about 10 or so girls my age. When I was trying to think of activities we could do my grandfather suggested apple bobbing, I had never done it before but I wanted to! So that night we got a giant wooden pot and put the apples and water in. My papaw went first to show us how to do it, then I went , and slowly every girl there went. Middle school girls, who had probably spent hours on their makeup, hair and costumes, went bobbing for apples. Some even went as deep as their shoulders! It was delightful fun, but for some reason I haven't done it since... now I know where it originated from! It would make sense though, my papaw has a fair bit of Irish in him, and supposedly his mothers grandfather smuggled himself onto a ship, in an apple barrel, to come to America.

This is a great opening podcast! Though it's kind of funny that under it we can enjoy comments like "There are two supernatural forces operating in the world. Rubber ducks and wooden decoys. So which ones are birds, do you think?" ... some folx think there's no mystery in the world at all, but your stories remind us there is indeed a lot of mystery and wonder!

The invisibility from the fern seed could only be used to do bad things and not good things. But what about doing bad things for a good reason? Say for example robbing from a big company that uses child slave labour and then using what you stole to set the enslaved people free?

A great thanks WITHOUT whom our language folklore and culture could fall in the memories of soo much thank you 🙏 sir😊❤☘️💚🤍🧡😁👍 take care of such a tresor of knowledge I feel so little front of such habilities that soon, telling Tales specially in the context of my grandparents House growing 9kids like those days but blood is thicker than you know I have been told you don't know who you are yet Boy I took it like a criticism not a fact... It's knowing ourselves and assuming who you are and your background to learn about the cense of life,☘️
