If anything, it's the mother that do not let the kid to sever the tie with the father by cutting off the last name. Since the kids are almost all grown up, you can only do so much to help them repair what's lost.

Under stress, we could lose it sometimes during argument, but that doesn't make us the vilain to discard or to get rid of.
