I'm still clearing the ground for my formal parterre at the front of the cottage.
I need to move the very heavy stone trough which was here when I bought the place. I want to use it as an alpine garden in a different location.

It would be impossible to move it alone without applying some basic scientific principles, so I applied logic and thought about the Druids (Stonehenge) and the Egyptians (Pyramids). I used levers, tracks and rollers.
It was long before the beautiful stone trough was in its new location.

That is exactly how we moved a stone salting trough. Damded heavy work and it took 6 of us to move it with younger nephews doing the moving the rollers from the back to the front. It really makes you appreciate just how much effort and time moving the Stonehenge stones must have taken.
Totally agree. They must have had some pretty clever engineers. I was told that they used greased runners on tracks for stone henge. Rather than rollers.
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Either way, to move stones that size and weight that far by sheer manpower is incredible. No roads as we understand them. No cranes. No hydraulics, just sheer strength and numbers. Not even a road atlas to find their way.
@@pleatedskirt18 i have to dig a huge tree root out next and move it down the garden. It's bigger than i am. That's going to take some thought
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Try the same principle, but with the root on a pallet. These are often free and are good for firewood or for making a compost bin afterwards! Good luck!

good i searched videos like this only becuse i remembered i had a class with levers when a kid you should try one video with pulley
Yes i should that would be interesting. Physics and maths always comes into my gardening 😂
Just searched with the same idea. Tree trunks oxen bulls. You could even build rollers that slop upwards lift 20 30 or more tonnage using hollowed ends out pinned. Using ropes animals humans. I think the simplest way works, just needed a bit of thinking. And animal fat as a grease to help with lubrication.

I once tried to slide a sink planter along a bit of wood and it landed on my finger,which split open, ouch, and I had to go to work on night shift with a big plaster on that night, it was a bit awkward with all the hand washing. Should have watched this 1st!
Ouch!!!! It's easily done. It would have made a funny out take if I'd caught it on video! Hope it healed quickly
Maybe add the word planter to the tags. We call them planters in the us and I didn't find this video until after I moved my planter

Stonehenge Was Made Using A Greased Rail System Not Rollers, They Then Used Levers And Earth Works to raise The cap stones. You May Have Been able To Move Your Trough By Greasing The Wooden Rails And Sliding It !

Let me it this way... we moved a salting trough of about 6 feet by 3 feet 6 inches. There were 6 of us using rollers and tie-down straps and we could hardly move it from the horsebox to the top of the drive some 50 yards distant. No, you will NOT lift a trough like this.
