Hello Mr. Elrod! As an AP World History, I would like to ask you: could you elaborate on why Africa is so poor? Sure, imperialism may have stolen wealth from Africa, and yet today in the 21st-century, Africa is still rich in natural resources. So what reasons explain why Africa is poor? Also, most critics of globalization claim that it promotes environmental degradation and human rights violations. What's the reasoning and logic behind these claims though? It would help me a lot if you could explain. Thank you!
You have hit on the more popular explanations and seem to have a pretty good handle on those ideas. It would take me a long time to discuss alternative views, but I might suggest reading Thomas Sowell (Wealth Poverty and Politics) and Jared Diamond (Guns, Germs, and Steel). If you don't feel like reading the books, I am sure you can find them on the youtube somewhere. I hope that helps!
+Londiwe Mvelasi Each country is going to be in a different situation, but I imagine that most SS African countries would be considered in stage 2 of Rostow's model and in need of more infrastructural development before they can move on.
+Zack Elrod But countries like South Africa, Sycheles etc they have a good infrastructure, I think it Africa does not fit to any of Rostows model and it challenging to allocate it because some countries fall in stage 2 while others in 3. This is very confusing.
I think SA would most likely be somewhere in stage 3 approaching stage 4, if you wanted to try and fit it in Rostow's model. It's important to remember that will models there will not be perfect fits, but things that generally work and generally fit.
I think you may have been confused with the modernization theory... Rostow's model was correlated with the modernization theory not the dependency theory....
+Hussain Aziz right. the purpose of the video was to contrast the two ideas on how countries / societies progress and develop. rostow's model is the "modernization theory."
Avinda, no they are not the same thing. Rostow's theory encourages countries to engage in free trade and specialize in order to develop and grow their economies. world system's theory sees free trade as rich areas (cores) trying to take advantage of less wealthy areas (semi-periphery and periphery). world systems theory would not encourage free trade, but either self sufficiency or fair trade.
Rostow's model is a free market approach. I am not sure if you're referring to a theory called free market. If you are, then I have not heard of that specific theory.
I beg to differ, Cambodia still is in a traditional society, there is practically no infrastructe, education is nearly non-existant and people live extremely undeveloped. opinion?
datWreqz The idea of traditional society would be predominately hunter-gatherer, with no evidence of complex civilization. Think of tribal Amazonians. While a great deal of Cambodia may not be well developed, they still have complex systems of government, economics, cities (which requires infrastructure), etc. While from our perspective, they may be well undeveloped, Cambodia would still at least fit the requirements of a stage 2. Hope that helps.
Thank you so much! This covered everything I need for my AP Human Geography project! Excellent and easy for me to understand.
Thank you. The Q & A at the end of the ppt is a great aid to learning development processes from two areas of study.
I have an exam tomorrow... This video was very helpful to better understand the two theories. Cheers mate.
William Go Glad I could help. Thanks for watching.
I think about ap human every minute of my life. Ily mr elrod
This was really helpful, thanks.
Wonderful presentation

glad i could help. good luck on your test!
That was an awesome presentation, so where can we allocate countries such as Africa in Rostows model of economic challenges?
+Londiwe Mvelasi Each country is going to be in a different situation, but I imagine that most SS African countries would be considered in stage 2 of Rostow's model and in need of more infrastructural development before they can move on.

+Zack Elrod SA exactly that was challenging me, Africa as a continent where can I allocate it... your job is wonderful. keep it up!

This was great thank you
+Taymaz Valley your welcome. glad i could help.
So Rostows stages are likely the demographic transition model right?
they are similar, but not the same.
hi Zack
Is modernization theory and world systems theory the same thing?
Avinda, no they are not the same thing. Avinda Ekanayake no they are different theories
Thank you! It helped me a lot...
you're welcome. glad i could help!
what about market based ?
Rostow's model is a free market approach. I am not sure if you're referring to a theory called free market. If you are, then I have not heard of that specific theory.
