I have a feeling I’m going to be watching this series a few times before I get it all in my head. But I love how you go through and show what the sound is like without each module.
Never used a modular before. Got hold of VCV and didnt have a clue. This helped me patch my first sound.......now I know what to look for and expect, onward and upward. Thank you so much for your help
This is all so cool! I thought I was interested in electronic music before, but now with this! I'm so dazzled! I can't wait to build my own Modular synthesizer!!!
Just found your channel and love the videos, they are answering so many of my questions. I haven't bought anything, I do have an idea of where I want to start, but these videos help me understand what I need to start.
+Vicente Di Tagle Hey :) thanks for your comment! I'm really happy to hear that you got off to a good start. Have fun exploring your modular further then!
Hey thank you so much i have been stuck for ages getting the gate and ADSR sorted now i can play the key board ,, what a relief i was close but now i am there , any one new to the modular synth will find your vid,s very help, full cheer,s and thank you so much : - ) Sueeperr,,,s stuff....
So I'm looking at your patching, everything makes sense, then I step back and try to process all the information at once, and now I've got a headache. This will be a fun project.
Thanks! I have been considering building my own system for quite some time now. Hopefully soon I will have my own setup. If I get stuck then, I most definitely will call on you. The expert! :D
Hi, thanks for your videos, helps me a lot getting started with my own modular. I was wondering, what is your midi to cv interface you are using in this video?
+Zakk Blews thank you! It depends. The modular signals can be quite loud, so depending on your mixer it might overdrive your line inputs. Just try it out :)
I've seen some musicians, from what I understand not using keyboards with a modular synth. Some of them are achieving long drone sounds. Would this be the case if you didn't use the keyboard and control the sounds through patching different units? Thanks for the great videos!
Yes, indeed. In the 11th video I show a self-playing patch. You don't need a keyboard at all with a modular synth and if you watch my recent jams, I haven't been using one myself for a while. Eg here: DR-OM Modular Synth Drone Music (w/ iPhone, Volca Beats & MircroBrute) #TTNM
Thanks, your videos really help with understanding modular synthesis in general! Hopefully i can save up soon to start my own rack... By the way, how would one go about having a modular synth and changing its parameters in a program such as Ableton live or FL studio? Is it possible to have MIDI outputs for the separate modules in a way that they can be controlled electronically, in a particular song? Thanks in advance!
MIDI works for gates, notes, clock and stuff like pitch bend or velocity, but you're a bit limited with that, compared to products like Expert Sleepers Silent Way. Definitely check those out! :)
Silent Way lets you create CV modulation inside your DAW and send it to the modular via the Expert Sleepers hardware. Just like MIDI, just way more flexible.
That helped a lot thanks! But how to add another adsr envelop for Exempel for the Filter ? With Stack cables ? And where to put them ..? Hope you can help me out :-) Thanks in advance
Yes, you simply copy the gate going into your first ADSR with a stackcable or multiple module and patch it into another ADSR. The ADSR out then goes into the filter cutoff CV input :)
Is it possible to modulate a eurorack oscillator without a VCA or should you really use one? I have a Future Retro XS semi modular synth and am looking to expand it with additional euro rack oscillators. My XS has a midi to cv to I can trigger the oscillator via CV. I think I can plug a eurorack oscillator into my future XS VCA and use the the XS envelope to control the oscillator amplitude. Or I can plug a euro oscillator into the XS filter in using a gate input to trigger the filter envelope so I can filter modulate the oscillator. I think I can take my XS envelope out to modulate the pitch of the euro oscillator which would work then the XS amp envelope controls the volume over time - does this leave me without a filter envelope if I use the XS envelope out for pitch or can that same envelope still be used on the filter? Is this all correct? I believe I would also need a mixer to control the amount of pitch modulation applied to a euro oscillator wouldn't I? Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to get my head around this whole modular thing.
Haha yes, there is a bunch of stuff in your comment. Generally speaking though, the answers are pretty much "yes" :D You should get a VCO module and a mixer or attenuator module to scale the CV (modulation amount) if necessary.
There are also sequencer and even keyboard modules, which you can use to send triggers, gates, pitch CV and more. So you can create complete performances inside the modular system as well.
Where are the best sites to buy the parts to build modular synths, I build guitar tube amps, copies of Marshalls and others, can't afford to buy them so I build, thanks.
You can buy kits or just PCBs and stuff at Thonk.co.uk Other than that, I don't really know. Check out the muffwiggler forums :) There's a big DIY community.
Well, the VCO always puts out audio, so when I connect it to a mixer you can hear its waveform. To make the VCO shut up or sound with the keyboard, you need a VCA to turn its volume up only when a key is pressed. I hope this makes things clearer. Let me know if you have more questions :)
+Del Svak you can play four notes at the same time. So for example up to four different sequences or chords with up to four notes. Or a mix of both. :)
+The Tuesday Night Machines Thank you for the responsne. If I understood well, you mean that I can trigger 4 VCO's at the same time..? So, If I play a 4-note chord on my keyboard I would have one VCO for each note..?? Also, if I have 4 midi lines in my DAW, can I send each line to each channel accordingly ?? So I can have 4 channels, each one with its own midi patterns??
Hi, thank you very much for this useful videos. I have one question, would de posible to use one CV-gate and one CV-pitch signal for control more than one oscillator? For example with just the CV-gate/pitch signals from the minibrute, would be posible to control more than one oscillator? If its possible, could you explain how to make the patch please?
It really depends what you want to do with it. For example, if you already have a MicroBrute, you could start with a case and one module. You can build a whole modular wall too though, for tens of thousands of dollars. That's the good thing about modulars, you can do whatever you want and start as small or big as you want.
Hi, I really want to build a modular synth. Could you please tell me how I might go about buying a VCO, Mixer, MIDI to CV, LFO, VCA and ADSR with a case and power supply that will all work together (NB I have two MIDI keyboard, but they are both UDB-MIDI keyboards, would they work?) Thanks.
CrucialNoise If you buy "Eurorack" modules, power supplies and cases they should all work together. Just check your local music store, one of the online modular synth stores or the muffwiggler "For Sale/Trade" forum. USB MIDI doesn't work directly, but through a USB MIDI Host. Although it might be cheaper to the a keyboard with a regular MIDI out. There are also keyboards with CV outputs.
This might be a dumb question, but do you have to use a MIDI controller keyboard? Can you just not use MIDI at all? Are there analog controller keyboards? You just need an analog synth with CV OUT, right?
Is there any way to use the amp envelope from your playing on the MIDI keyboard rather than a static ADSR envelope generator so you can be more expressive?
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. The MIDI keyboard only sends on/off gate signals, so there are no envelopes coming from the keyboard. Or do you mean velocity? You could use velocity to modulate the ADSR. For example you could patch it to the Sustain portion to be able to play louder or quieter.
@tuesdaynightmachines Ah yes I mean velocity. What kind of output would you need on a MIDI keyboard to get access to this? And what do you mean by sustain input?
The MIDI keyboard doesn't need anything special (MIDI always includes all data, incl. velocity). You just need a MIDI-CV converter with a velocity CV output. Regarding sustain, that's not an "input", but a stage in the ADSR (Attack Decay Sustain Release). The sustain portion of the envelope usually specifies the amplitude (or "volume") of the sound. So when you patch the velocity to modulate the sustain, thesound become louder or quieter depending on how hard you press the MIDI keyboard keys.
+EvenSteven Official generally one pitch CV signal is monophonic. However some midi-cv interfaces offer polyphony with multiple pitch CV lines. The Vermona qMi supports four-voice polyphony.
ive got a question: Does the gate 2 in the product below replace the 1v/oct in your quad midi2cv? www.modulargrid.net/e/grove-audio-gms-632eu-usb-midi-cv-interface
i'm looking to build my own synthesizer, but i have a really low budget. very very basic stuff, all i need is a vco, vcf, vca, lfo, and envelope. normally that would be easy, but my budget is probably $600 maximum, preferably less. do you know anything? i've been doing internet research and haven't been able to come up with anything that fits the criteria.
i actually saw that, and considered it, but I kind of want something where i put it together myself, not just do the wires in between everything. I found Pittsburghmodular.com and it has all the stuff i'm looking for cheap, the things that I would want are the ADSR, LPG, Dual VCA, VILFO, and Waveforms modules, but all of that adds up to about $815.
Well, there isn't really a low budget way into Eurorack if you want that many features. You could get a Dark Energy (or MicroBrute) and then just get an empty Eurorack case and buy just one or two module to patch to the DE/MB and then slowly expand.
No, it's not. If you want four-voice polyphony for example, you'll need four (more or less identical) of modules of everything. 4x VCO, 4x VCF, 4x VCA, etc. plus a MIDI-CV interface hat supports polyphony (like the Vermona qMi in the video).
***** Cool, why did you get that one? I am just asking because I am trying to put a modular together and I am looking at different modules trying to work out what they do, and there seems to be quite a few MIDI to CV modules at in different prices and I am not sure I fully understand what the more expensive ones do...
I got the Vermona because I wanted to play polyphonically a while ago, when I had a bigger modular with polyphonic capabilities. The qMI also outputs clock at different divisions, which is useful. If you don't need a MIDI DIN socket though and only MIDI USB, then I can really recommend the CVpal. It's tiny, doesn't need electricity from the bus and can be set to various modes (monophonic with clock, dual monophonic, 4x trigger, etc.). What features do you need? :)
***** Not entirely sure yet, I haven't picked out my oscillators yet. I want something with a fair amount of sequencing power, so I want to get a good sequencer and an arpeggiator included. But polyphony is also high on my list. Speaking of which how does polyphony differ in modular compared with fixed architecture synths? Do I need specific oscillator modules with polyphonic capabilities?
Ashadowtotheworld Okay, interesting. Which MIDI-CV modules feature a built-in arp and seq? Polyphony requires one "voice" for each note you want to play simultaneously. So if you want to play a three-note chord, you need 3 VCOs, 3 VCAs, 3 Envelopes and 3 Filters (although one works to, which would make the patch "paraphonic" and not "polyphonic"). The MFB OSC02 features 3 oscillators in one, which is a good starting point for example.
I have a feeling I’m going to be watching this series a few times before I get it all in my head. But I love how you go through and show what the sound is like without each module.
Very well explained! 10 years later, this is still a great recommendation for new learners.

Thank you so much for doing this. So helpful and clear.
Awesome! Thanks for watching and for your comment! As always, feel free to post questions underneath the videos :)
This is all so cool! I thought I was interested in electronic music before, but now with this! I'm so dazzled! I can't wait to build my own Modular synthesizer!!!
Haha, cool! Modulars are awesome indeed :D
This was a great little beginner tutorial. I'm just getting started with synth, so stuff like this is liquid gold for me. Thanks heaps!
Awesome! Thanks for watching :)

THANK YOU!!!! I recently went modular with zero knowledge & these videos have opened my eyes!!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!
+Vicente Di Tagle Hey :) thanks for your comment! I'm really happy to hear that you got off to a good start. Have fun exploring your modular further then!
These videos for me have been indispensable.
This is a great series of videos you do Tuesday, they are short ,concise, helpful and I like the way you have the conclusion at the end. Thanks
The best, most eloquent videos on the subject around. Thank you for your efforts.
This is massively useful- not least because it provided proof that my shiny new envelope generator wasn’t working!
Yeah, that all makes sense. Just a matter of practice and experimentation now. Cheers!
Hey thank you so much i have been stuck for ages getting the gate and ADSR sorted now i can play the key board ,, what a relief i was close but now i am there , any one new to the modular synth will find your vid,s very help, full

Thanks! Happy to read that the videos are useful 😊
The most detailed tutorial out there. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome :) Thanks for watching!
These videos are great. Thasnks for putting them together.
This is the first video I wanted to watch
Great :) Enjoy your modular journey!
Clear and easy to understand. Thanks!
Thank you SO much for this video, and for this whole series. You've made everything make so much more sense to me now. Time for me to get started! :)

DJ Shuffle gotta take notes of the signal path to make it simpler.
thank you man! was struggling with this a bit you cleared it up.

i don't even own a mod synth, but really enjoy these videos :)
Thank you very much 😊 Non-modular synths are really just modular synths with patch cables you can’t reach.
Well done clear explanation of a basic patch! :-)
this actually helped me so much. thanks!
Cool! Happy to hear that :)
really enjoying your vids mate..cheers
This really helped. Thank you!
very interesting and helpful videos, thank you very much, good job
Thanks! Happy to hear that it's been helpful :)
Ausgezeichnet! Vielen Dank!
You're very welcome!
My mind is blown right now
Great job.
Thanks :)
This series was really helpful! Do you know how to record a synth into ableton?
good job buddy
Thank you =)

Cool! I have other question if you don´t mind... How many oscillator can handle one VCA using multiple modules? Thank you very much
I'm not sure if I understand. You'd have to mix the VCO signals together with a mixer module before going into the VCA.
How much does a basic euro rack set up cost roughly? Great videos btw!
