  • County Clare traditional singer, Robbie McMahon sang the definitive version of 'Spancilhill'. The song composed by Michael Considine bemoans the plight of Irish immigrants to the USA who so longed for home in Ireland, cultural events (a Horse fair in this case), friends & loves they left behind.
The late Robbie McMahon passed away in December 2012 aged 86 years.
The author of Spancilhill was Michael Considine who emigrated to USA around 1870. Michael worked for two years in Boston, before moving to California. He intended earning enough money to bring his sweetheart, Mary MacNamara (Mack) to America. Unfortunately his health was deteriorating & realizing he hadn't long to live he wrote the poem, in remembrance of his love & sent it to his nephew John in Ireland.

Does anyone know the song about 'Katie Mgee, with her neat baby, behind on her back strapped on...'? Also :' There's a hairy ass fair, in the County Clare, in a place they call Spancilhill'? Known it for years but forgetting the words now, and I want to sing it to my granddaughters, Bonny-Haf, and Ivy-Seren. Diolch o Gymru (Thanks from Wales), Denis Moran
