@erni2619 no. German compound words are the same as English noun phrases, except they're written without spaces: "panda diplomacy" translates to "Panda-Diplomatie" "birthday present" translates to "Geburtstagsgeschenk" English noun phrases *act* as nouns, but in German they *are* nouns. If we add spaces between roots we get: "Geburtstagsgeschenk" = "Geburt‿s‿tag‿s‿Geschenk" (the "s"-es there don't mean plural, like in English, but are just joining the nouns, so it's easier to say. In the first example, the "-" is used with the same intention) So "Geburt" means "birth" "Tag" means "day" "Geschenk" means "present"/"gift" notice how in English, the noun phrase "birth day" became a single noun - "birthday" That should really give you a feel for german compound words. At least if we want to see a panda or dozen there are plenty of other European zoos that have them although Scotland's have just returned to China. It would be nice if Dublin or Cork got pandas but I suspect the cost would outweigh any added income. Thinking about a visit to France shortly, they had a baby panda born recently.
China should have never sent any panda out. They are too precious. Given the plight of YaYa in Memphis zoo you can see that sometimes they are victims of melicious treatment too. Glad YaYa was able to return to China and happily rehabilitated. Shame on Memphis zoo.
We’ve never had giant pandas in our local zoo, but we have red pandas, which are cuter, climb trees and regularly just leave the enclosure because there’s no actual thing stopping them from walking off, and going to hang out with the otters. Not as bad as the orangutans, who in theory are contained, but in practise view any barrier as a challenge and have broken out of not only the enclosure but the zoo, more than once, and in total kidnapping one toddler (I think she wanted her baby orangutan to have a friend?? They got a kilometre away)
Orangutans are adventurers, they love to roam because apart from seeking out diet variety, it also help them maintain their dexterity which is detrimental in their survivability. But the fact that they kidnap a toddler shows that they already considered the zoo their home. So there's that.

Funny anectode about Pandas - The first Czech prezident V. Havel (in office 1989 - 2003) was huge friend of Dalailama and whenever Dalailama came to visit him in Prague, Tibetian flags would flood the whole of czech republic, people would put them in windows and even some cities would officially put them out. So we got no Pandas from china. Then in 2013 big populist Babis became prime minister and said that he will get us pandas. Instead of solving huge problems which our country had and still has. He and his Mayor of Prague that time Krnacova kept both promising how they will get us some pandas instead of focusing on real politcis. And when Chinesse dicta- I mean president came to visit Prague in spring of 2016 it looked really promising. Krnacova stated that "There will be Panda in Prague". But guess who came to visit the Fall of the same year. Thats right, in the fall of 2016 (half a year after chineses dictator) the Dalailama himself came to visit Prague ones more - for the last time actually. And a huge wave of pro Tibetian and pro dalailama sentiment rose up. Our goverment at the time tried to put our officiall statements how "Czech republic respects Chinas whole-state policy" and stuff like that. And they treid to make up with China as they could but it was too late. China was furious and stated that this is outrageous and so on and so on. And they did what China is ussually doing. But the Czech pro dailalama mood was too strang. Many of the Czech reasonable politic figures met with his holiness and took pictures. Many Tibetian flags were flying high. And a huge wave of solidarity with Dailalama and Tibet was present in the public space. And guess what happened with the Pandas. No Pandas. Babis was sad (not really, he stole bilions for his enterpises) and Krnacova was sad. Our prezident at that time Zeman (pro chinesse/russian puppet) even flew to China. But it was no good. China doesnt like Czech republics view of the history. So we have no Pandas:) And we are very happy so 💪🇨🇿🌄
So you get fed a distorted view of history instead of objective reality, gotcha. Are all dictators democratically elected and do none of them hold absolute power? Because that seems to be the Anglosphere view of dictators
Waiit a minute... if we breed one of the pandas not owned by the Chinese government with another panda, owned by it, will the government only own half of the panda? Can you pay half the lease? If it's twins, can you keep one and give the other back to China? If we make 4 breeding pairs, created from 2 unrelated independent pandas in Taiwan and Mexico, and some 2 other ones, could it help establish an independent population of pandas, out of government control?
I think an issue is that the Panda costs a lot in upkeep I read from somewhere that zoos need to import bamboo to feed them Itd be alright when times are good which isnt necessarily true now
No, bamboo can grow in most parts of the US and is considered an invasive species. Sam mentioned in the video that volunteers grow it in their backyards.
@@UncommonElevators But pandas can be picky eaters and if they don't like the bamboo that is in season - such as now in Korea at least - then the keepers have problems.
I used to live there and I swear they kept them in their feeding rooms way more than they should have. They always looked kinda...ratty? And I never once saw them in the outdoor play enclosure even though I went to the zoo all the time (my art school was right next to it)
Very conviniently left out the panda that died of neglegence in memphis and the other one very malnourished. That might have something to do with China no longer wanna rent their pandas?
Please pay attention to Fubao. In China, where pandas are said to be a national treasure, they have not opened their fubao to the public, only causing controversy. Please protect Fubao #savefubao
The US also thinks that, much like the rest of the world apart from a handful of micronations and people that have been fed nothing but propaganda all their lives and lack any form of critical thinking skills.
You failed to mention the condition of some of the pandas America was keeping, particularly in Memphis where one died and another was in a completely bedraggled state before it was returned to China!
Wendover and half is interesting is great but completely biased against China, you see it through so many of their comments on the jet lag shows and podcasts.
The story is a bit more interesting than that. A panda did die, yes. Le Le. Died from heart disease, at the age of 24. Giant panda lifespan is 20-30 years. It wasn't a death of neglect - it was just natural causes for an aging panda. The interesting part comes afterwards. As US-China relations were not good at that point, China's state propaganda engine seized upon the event and produced a flood of reporting describing how American zoos were neglecting and abusing their pandas. Their online operations followed, flooding social media with similar stories - supported by combing years of photographs to find any in which the pandas looked at their worst. Including some from Chinese zoos.
True but I think the majority of that was just from people online seeing the images and jumping to conclusions. What I was trying to point out is that it's very strange how they didn't even mention this in the video.@@vylbird8014
Man, I feel bad for the pandas! They probably just want to their lives their own way like us humans do. If they were born and grew up in captivity they probably won't survive for long in the wild because they never truly learned to hunt/forage and defend themselves. But then that means they'll have to stay in captivity, sadly. I guess as long as they get more room wherever they go in China than they do in non-Chinese zoos it's not the worst thing. I just always feel bad for the animals when humans use them as like presents and/or just completely try to take control of their lives, as if the animals don't want freedom like people do
Well it all depends. If the CCP loses power due to the failing economy and (more importantly failing birthrate) in China then who knows what could happen.
I'm imagining how th conversation about the pandas went with Joe and Xi. "Cut the shit Xi! Let's discuss what we came here for, pandas!" "Alright Joe, I got some pandas for you, fat fluffy pandas! The people are gonna love them Joe!"

Fubao was treated like a royalty in Korea. The entire Bao panda family is well cared for. In fact, the keepers loved the pandas like their own children. Lucky baby pandas. I hope they get to stay in Korea for a long time.
I'm trying, but this AMS49K is everywhere. What's the use of reporting a post every few seconds for ten minutes when the spammer can make hundreds of posts a second around the clock?
Google/YT could easily tackle that problem, not really sure why they won't do it... I sense a Solomon solution: they'll start charging for API access, this would severely maim the bots ability to spam, but also alternate ad-free versions of the YT app, killing two birds with one stone...
This video completely missed the massive situation at Memphis zoo where a panda died and a second was in terrible condition. That was the reason why China took the pandas back.
That was more an excuse. If China cared about the condition of the pandas they would have recalled them long ago, and only the ones having problems. This is entirely political.
As an American panda super fan, it makes me so sad to think we’ll likely be without pandas soon. Pandas are a valuable means of diplomatic exchange. We don’t agree with China on much right now, but we can all agree that we love pandas and want to conserve their habitat, and that’s a start to better diplomatic relations, in my opinion. Furthermore, pandas are a means of cultural education! I’ve learned so much about Chinese culture, as well as the cultures of all the nations that have pandas, thanks to my fellow panda fans on social media.
Do you follow the Bao family in Korea by any chance? I discovered pandas through them when young Fu was born just over 3 years ago, until then I hadn't bothered much with pandas but she and FuHin in Japan were both born during the pandemic and lured me in. I am now a firm Princess Fu fan (won't go into the absolute gorgeous bundles that are the Princesses Hui and Rui) while Mr Le Bao himself is the most handsome panda in the world.
Thank you Sam for this video, which is fully interesting instead of half, as advertised in the name. Here in London there isn't even a remote possibility to see a Panda Bear. I don't agree with the act of loaning Panda bears on the basis of a political tuning between the CCP and the Nation hosting the animals. Also, I don't understand why no-one else in the world isn't breeding Pandas. Happy New Year, Sam! Anthony
Frankly its partially because pandas are almost impossible to breed. Pandas have extremely low libido and thus takes extreme effort to force them to actually make a baby panda. So even breeding pandas isn't super possible.
I think you forgot to mention how YaYa and LeLe were not given the best care Memphis could’ve provided. YaYa’s health significantly improved after it got back to China. Abundant video footages have proved that.

@erni2619
no.
German compound words are the same as English noun phrases, except they're written without spaces:
"panda diplomacy" translates to "Panda-Diplomatie"
"birthday present" translates to "Geburtstagsgeschenk"
English noun phrases *act* as nouns, but in German they *are* nouns.
If we add spaces between roots we get:
"Geburtstagsgeschenk" = "Geburt‿s‿tag‿s‿Geschenk"
(the "s"-es there don't mean plural, like in English, but are just joining the nouns, so it's easier to say. In the first example, the "-" is used with the same intention)
So
"Geburt" means "birth"
"Tag" means "day"
"Geschenk" means "present"/"gift"
notice how in English, the noun phrase "birth day" became a single noun - "birthday"
That should really give you a feel for german compound words.
The same thing happened with
"to day" -> "to-day" -> "today"
"web site" -> "web-site" -> "website"
and many others

20 years ago panda are delivery in noon with police guards, show off their zoo got pandas 😂
In 2018 China loaned two pandas to Finland for 15 years contract, and now, only after 6 years later Finland must break that contract because their Zoo dont have afford maintain that huge expenses. I made vide0 of it just today.
Thanks Sam im feeling jet lagged due to my flight to Boise, Illinois from Seattle, washington so this really helped me
We're there any pandas on your flight?
Jet lagged from a 1 hour difference?

GUYS HE SAID THE THING
I saw the menphis pandas only a month or two before they left. They looked depressed.
I lived in Memphis once. I can totally understand.
The transformation YaYa got after going back to China!
YaYa is better now. menphis in blocklist already 😅
I’ve actually never heard Sam be happy before
He sounded so squeaky that for a second I thought it was a completely different person
Scotland lost our 2 pandas this year :( guess that’s the way things go with Pandaplomacy though
Feels like the editors had fun with the stock footage and pandas on this one.
The UK doesn't have a panda as of the upload of this. They were returned on 4 December 2023.
I already knew most of this, but all of the PUNdas were so worth it lol
Absolutely love your videos and I learn SO MUCH from you. Not all would be strictly relevant as I'm in Europe (Ireland) but great none the less. One thing I will never ever understand is how metric (mm's) can ever be viewed as more complicated than imperial. I understand a lack of familiarity but there just is no argument that a decimalized system (1000mm = 1meter, etc). I can't see the USA ever upgrading though, if only due to people's lack of familiarity / fluency! Thanks again for all your great content
Good news! As of late July 2024, both San Diego AND Washington DC are getting pandas by the end of 2024!
Fun fact: red pandas were called panda first
@@bepamungkas ‘oh yeah they stole a baby from their parent’s arms but hey! They consider the zoo home! :)) ‘
Doesn’t surprise me though they were all born there.
Do you know how the red panda attacks? They make a French military salute.

man this vid should just be called “Pandiplomacy”
So we have no Pandas:) And we are very happy so 💪🇨🇿🌄
why are you such a hater? it not good to be racist.
Czechs suck
So, what is the Czech‘s view on history?
And what kind of animal is Dalai Lama? Is it cute?
So you get fed a distorted view of history instead of objective reality, gotcha.
Are all dictators democratically elected and do none of them hold absolute power? Because that seems to be the Anglosphere view of dictators

for real
Waiit a minute... if we breed one of the pandas not owned by the Chinese government with another panda, owned by it, will the government only own half of the panda? Can you pay half the lease? If it's twins, can you keep one and give the other back to China? If we make 4 breeding pairs, created from 2 unrelated independent pandas in Taiwan and Mexico, and some 2 other ones, could it help establish an independent population of pandas, out of government control?
Pandas are so rare that they make front page news any time a new one is born. For a day at least it's world wide Pandamonium.
I'll see myself out.
I love a story with a happy ending, whole video made me laugh and had me super intrigued. The FedEx Panda Express... jokes really do write themselves
I think an issue is that the Panda costs a lot in upkeep
I read from somewhere that zoos need to import bamboo to feed them
Itd be alright when times are good which isnt necessarily true now
No, bamboo can grow in most parts of the US and is considered an invasive species. Sam mentioned in the video that volunteers grow it in their backyards.
@@UncommonElevators But pandas can be picky eaters and if they don't like the bamboo that is in season - such as now in Korea at least - then the keepers have problems.
One million dollars per panda per year plus paying for bamboo vet and else.
Should have called it "How to move your panda".
There was also rumors that alleges the Memphis Zoo did not take care of the pandas properly, where it was shown the pandas were as thin as a carpet
I used to live there and I swear they kept them in their feeding rooms way more than they should have. They always looked kinda...ratty? And I never once saw them in the outdoor play enclosure even though I went to the zoo all the time (my art school was right next to it)
Chinese authorities debunked this rumor but some netizens refuse to believe.

I grew up within walking distance of the UK’s only pandas in Scotland (only saw them about twice) and now after 13 years they’re gone
To be fair. China thinks Taiwan belongs to them, so technically to China it’s still theirs!
The US also thinks that, much like the rest of the world apart from a handful of micronations and people that have been fed nothing but propaganda all their lives and lack any form of critical thinking skills.
Minecraft is about to lose its pandas.
You failed to mention the condition of some of the pandas America was keeping, particularly in Memphis where one died and another was in a completely bedraggled state before it was returned to China!
Which is probably the number one reason they don't gift them
Wendover and half is interesting is great but completely biased against China, you see it through so many of their comments on the jet lag shows and podcasts.
@@jaykafei4815 Most westerners read fake news that just parrots US propaganda. I know because I'm European and I'm constantly subjected to it
The story is a bit more interesting than that.
What I was trying to point out is that it's very strange how they didn't even mention this in the video.@@vylbird8014
seeing how hard it is to keep them alive, pretty sure the species wants to die out at this point.

Is it because I have no sleep or does he always sound like this
You're not alone. I came to the comments to see what was up because in the beginning he sounded like someone else. He must be sick.
I just always feel bad for the animals when humans use them as like presents and/or just completely try to take control of their lives, as if the animals don't want freedom like people do
America may never have a panda again
Well it all depends. If the CCP loses power due to the failing economy and (more importantly failing birthrate) in China then who knows what could happen.
The stock footage of the guy with the panda head sent me
I'm imagining how th conversation about the pandas went with Joe and Xi.

The scariest thing about the spambots is they're using stolen accounts from hacked users.... Reporting them is even more important now
Too busy shadow-banning real comments.

How can they breed pandas . . . without pandas? And to GET pandas they have to agree to the terms.
Because china owns them all excluding 4
Frankly its partially because pandas are almost impossible to breed. Pandas have extremely low libido and thus takes extreme effort to force them to actually make a baby panda. So even breeding pandas isn't super possible.
They tried IVF in Edinburgh for 13 years but nothing took
those are CN's Pandas, NOT US!
