I also really enjoyed the way Aaron broke down the reasoning for board preference. Really helps to assess these things and prioritize what to think about!
I really appreciate posting a run that went south! I actually like early reclaim loop killing a city and pushing town each slow phase for 4 fear and trimmed up board. Slipping in a Major is more fun and less mechanical though. :P
The reclaim loop with a double presence place turn 4 (and If you get lucky with deeps and get offered something like gift of power or elemental boon, then open the water with the presence you place you can get a major from the innate too), definitely can do the job. Works better against England because they’re slower. You got this!
After rewatching... I think getting initial draws without Fire / Earth really hurt us . You need consistent Fear generation with this matchup, and not getting 2-3 Fear per Turn with the first two levels of Rouses really puts a hamper on things. I wonder if after our first Wrap use we should have just gained 4 Energy and played Primordial Deeps and whatever Minor it gave us. And then that way we could have gone for a Major to use instead of Wrap and possible some better elements with the Minor and Major draw. 🤷♂ Also, the Events were not in our favor this game, haha!
From memory and without calculating it out, I think Wrap was a distraction, and there was no push for an early presence place with Serpent innate... Getting the "remove cards from invader deck" event is super rough, I think against Prussia 6 you have to take the extra blight from the damage boosts. In my experience Snek has a good time playing its starting powers and innates in the early game, though I can see why people might prefer to reach into the power decks for variety.
@@peasantsgameutopia Yeah, I think that is a valid assessment. We probably should have paid for that Air Event to give us a little extra room to grow before stage 3. But I have also been hit pretty hard with land 3 getting that Blight before as well. The Blight might have been a little easier to manage though. As for getting out more Presence with Wakes, with this matchup I have found that it is not entirely necessary. I know you can set things up to get a Presence out on turn 4, but usually that is the key thing you are doing that turn (along with the Innates), and with BP you might not have that breathing room. Of course if you can get more Presence out then that is always best. I think if we had gotten better draws previously we would have been in a better place to set that up. Hopefully we can get a rematch in some time
@@spazticdrummer7 Interesting about it not being necessary in this match - i suppose if you have good Aegis and Dahan counters that does a lot of the work. But by my counting you don't get to ever have 4 plays/6 energy if you don't sneak out some extra presence against Prussia 6, (or maybe you only get one turn). I'm still a bit of a novice with Snek in numbers of plays, so I can't resist getting that extra presence out :D
Thank you for this video. As a beginner, it would be wonderful if you could describe some of the reasoning, cards, and background a bit more, but I understand that this might be boring for some. One burning question I have is regarding the settings: In your version, you have blueish color reverse arrows over your growth options when you choose them -- I do not. I cannot find any "settings" which would allow me to do this. What am I missing or how can you activate that? Thank you!
Thank you for commenting! I do try to go into more detail on reasoning/strategy in some of my other videos, especially my basic strategy series, but those games are played without an adversary. I am actually playing on the public multiplayer beta version, which adds in a more granular undo function. If you play on Steam, you can opt into the beta under Properties->Betas. If you're on tablet or phone, you should get the update when Handelabra is ready to roll it out, but there's unfortunately not a way to get it right now, as far as I'm aware.
@@kalennoreth thanks! That explains it! I'm playing the steam version, but I think I'll just wait a bit. I have watched many of your basic strategy videos, they were fine. I think I'm beyond that point now, I would appreciate finer points of strategy, something geared for an audience of intermediate players but not merely a playthrough. (Your speedruns I appreciate but they are not quite what I am looking for,, though I am sure others feel differently). Anyhow, thanks much and best greetings from Germany

You did well for your first game of Spirit Island 😜 Great video!
Haha! Oh yeah, and I only read the rules once beforehand, of course 😅.

That's a good point, I usually do that on lower difficulties, but wasn't sure how well it scales. I'll have to try it out for the revenge match :)
