This rifle is right up there with the Thompson Chicago Typewriter, the classic Russian AK, and the good old American M16. A true classic and the flagship of the bullpup variety of rifles.
The FAMAS is the flagship for bullpups
Don't forget the FN FAL 😉
The m16 and AK have a bullpup design? I don’t think they do. Also the steyr aug is a lesser known gun, not a staple of tactical combat.
@@IMCPILOT841 Uh nobody mentioned bullpup M16's or AK's...
@@IMCPILOT841 You managed to completely miss the point of the ccomment
This is honestly one of my favorite guns ever. It has such an iconic, and futuristic looking design, and from what I've heard they're great rifles.
Yep. The rate of fire, looks and feels is just amazing.
That's why us Kiwis and Aussies were using as our standard military rifle. We kiwis are replacing it with the Cqb16 which is a m416 copy of some sort.
The LMT CQB16 is a direct impingement AR-15 derivative; not a piston driven system like the HK416. The French are adopting the HK416 though; replacing their FAMAS hesitation locking bullpup.
Direct impingement is lighter and less complex while theoretically improving accuracy as the recoiling mass (the operating rod) is very close in line with the barrel. The tradeoff is heat burning off lubricants and dirt building up in the action that requires cleaning and oiling.
A gas piston system is slightly heavier but can operate in more adverse conditions. There is a potential for reduced accuracy as the piston is often not in line with the shooter's shoulder; so the cycling of the action might throw off the aimpoint for following shots. On the other hand, the bolt carrier group is largely untouched by hot gases and the action is not introduced to carbon fouling so it can run more reliably.
Modern manufacturing and ammunition have brought the two operating systems pretty close together in terms of function and reliability; although I believe that direct impingement still requires regular cleaning and maintenance or malfunctions are likely.
Personally, I believe that the reason for the New Zealand selection was one of budget - AR-15 derivatives are pretty cheap. Also, Thales Lithgow didn't even submit their F90 to the tender. With the (Austrian) Steyr AUG A3 being the only bullpup submission while every other entry was of conventional layout and at least 2 being AR-15 derivatives, it was doubtful that the AUG was long for this world in NZ service.

That was my service rifle when I served in the austrian army.
When we were having combat exercices each of the soldiers got handed out 5 full magazines of blank ammunition.
At first we had a blast emptying all these magazines. But we soon found out that by taking only one shot with this exercise ammunition the whole gun got a mess.
Cleaning those guns with our pedantic supervisers glancing over our shoulders for hours was a pain in the ass.
So some of us figured, the next time we are on comabat exercise we won't take one single shot.
The next week during combat exercise, very few shots were taken in general. Seems like we weren't the only smart asses who had this ingenious idea.
Because there were so few shots taken that day our "Oberstabswachtmeister" ( probaly similar to a sergeant by rank) got suspicious and soon found out what we were up to.
And let me tell you. At the and of the combat exercise, when each of us thougt "hurray, no cleaning today" , that son of a bitch ordered the whole company to stay in a row, viewing towards the forest and shoot our whole load.
Fermats letztes Croissant wow! I would’ve loved to have seen the combat exercise. 1 hour and only 1 shot from both sides fired 😂
@@Jisifus Horn
Every one tries that - Never works ... :-)
One day some recruits ejected the blanks unfired to save time cleaning - well, the drill sergeants sure noticed it, but didn't say anything during the day. And we didn't fire a single shot that day. For a good reason. In the evening, when it was time to head home everyone had to give back the ammonition they received in the morning. They were having fun crawling through bushes and grass finding all the unfired blanks. Well, instead of being "home" at 17:00 we were back around 23:00 ... and THEN had to start cleaning.
Happens in the Finnish military also. But we use a variant of Kalashnikov, which is not hard to clean. But still, you get lazy. Live ammunition doesn't smudge up the gun that much. And it's more enthralling to shoot for real.
@siemenssx1 They thought they were "stealthy" when they got rid of the ammunition and threw them into the bushes (without caring about where they were - they didn't know yet that they would have to find it again).
The training area is huge. At the end of the day you may remember some places in general - but that doesn't help too much to actually finding the ammunition again.
From my experiences with the gun in the Bundesheer, it's great. Its reliable, its ballanced and just gorgeous. Some older Models that a few comrades had had some loading issues but that was basically solved around the 1990s.
It was sorted out b4 that mate ! As ya probably know it came into production in 1978 ,had a few issues, but the Austrians being the way thy crave perfection, got on it within a couple of years!! Great weapon, feels like an extension of ya body!!!

Fortunately, I'm not subject to some of the goofy, supposedly safe, guidelines that committees of officers sitting around a table put together for massive armies. Ironically, when I was heavily involved in competition matches, it was the military guys who sometimes caused us the most concern regarding safety. They were accustomed to being on a 5,000 acre military reservation where muzzle direction or a round flying over a berm was not that big a deal. :-)
😮 wow thank you for the knowledge.
Apparently those officers are pushing pencils way too much.😂

A nice bit of trivia on this rifle. The Australian Army (F88 Austeyr) version has a cross hair with the circle in the centre (The cross-hair doesn't meet in the middle but stops at the circumference of the circle).
The semi auto and full auto are separated but a little retractable knob on the bottom of the trigger that will not let the trigger depress past semi :D
So does the StG77 A1 which is the standard pattern in the Austrian army but some of the old ones with only the circle reticle were still used as melee training weapons when I was serving in 2020.

Very interesting rifle being designed in the 1970s and adopted by the Austrian Army by 1977 and firing the American 5.56mm cartridge very light recoil from the STG58 a.k.a FN FAL using the 7.62mm NATO round. The Austrians were thinking ahead. The use of the first polymer receiver, removable trigger group,1.5X power battle sight with emergency back up sights, see through polymer magazine, removable barrel to be cleaned or changed with a heavier automatic rifleman barrel.Very innovative for its time to be designed as a standard issue for the Austrian Infantry by making it lighter for the individual soldier and to carry more ammunition for a Western European nation. The Austrians saw the concept from the US Army who used the M16 series in Vietnam with the large amounts of ammunition carried by Infantrymen and the sustainment in combat operations. The STG58 or FN FAL series the soldier could carry the same amount but was heavier in weight and volume compared to the 7.62mm NATO round.I used to carry the M60 machinegun with 1200 rounds of 7.62mm during the Panama Invasion and it sucked with a 70 pound rucksack in combat. The riflemen in my platoon had M16A2s which had a basic load of 210 rounds in magazines plus spare bandolier of 180 rounds in their butt backs had lighter weapons with the exception of the grenadier who had an M203 on his M16A2 plus 5.56mm and 40mm grenade rounds.Yes fragmentation and smoke grenades everybody had them too.Weight in combat, sustainment, volume in accurate fire, and rapid advance played in the development of the Steyr AUG or STG77 from the American combat experience in Vietnam. This is my opinion from being an Infantryman.
Oh my god you had to carry 1200 rounds plus the gun plus your loadout, that is insane. Respect to you sir

Hi point bro
u seen the owen gun?
This probably sounds silly, but when I was a kid, I played a ton of Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. The Rainbow Six games were where I learned about quite a few different military weapons that existed. The Steyr AUG was by far my favorite gun in the game due to its unique aesthetics. While I don't know much about the technical aspects of it, I still have a soft spot in my heart for this gun just from my childhood. I want to learn more about this gun and possibly pick up for my collection sometime in the near future. Thanks for this video, Hickok45!
There are a couple of features unmentioned, at least featured by the army versions: silent cocking - changing the mag without cocking...
Btw: the circle in the telescope is designed as follows: A man standing 1.80 m exactly fits in at a distance of 300 metres. Fyi: the iron sights on the telescope are not only as backup in case the glass brakes. It is also intended for use at night - where the telescope is close to useless. So, during dark nights, use the iron sight instead.
Anyway, great military weapon considering its age. Its still one of the best weapons out there, second to one or two only (if at all). Remember: Its design is more than 40 years old - back in the day, it was way ahead of competition.
Myself: served in Austrian Army long time ago equipped with the AUG

Kyle Sonter Ah, I see, sorry for misunderstanding :-)
Klär mich mal bitte auf was du damit gemeint hast.
Brings back the CS days playing the coolest halflife mod available around the millenium.
Iwas told in the Austrian Army the circle in the scope is because of the geneva convention (official theory). I think its because the Army wanted a sight which allows fast aim and shoot. The Ring means to hit a 180cm or 5ft10 target at 300m or about 330 yd.
i love the AUG, one of my favorite if not my most favorite rifle of all time.. in service since 1977 and DECADES ahead of its time, you could tell that thing is just screaming for a red dot sight, so much so thats almost what their 1.5x scope provides.. minimal magnification and an accurate sight without much of a sight radius for iron sights
i really hope the aftermarket takes off for the steyr AUG, id love to see a NATO stock that also functioned with the AUGs bolt hold open, and wouldnt mind seeing some caliber conversions either
more people need to buy this rifle so we can start to build an aftermarket for the best bullpup ever made

THX for posting! Opinions on this rifle are quite different. What I can say having used it for quite a time: I love it. You can strip it completely (except the trigger unit and the scope) under a minute without any tools, the x1,5 scope made by Swarovski makes it easy to pick up a target and yes, a mansized target fits in the circle at 300m. At the size of an M4 it features a barrel twice as long and being so compact it handles great in urban situations or inside buildings. That´s where from my point of view also lies the bullpup design´s only disadvantage: in the right-hand configuration you can absolutely not shoot it from the left shoulder without bruises on your cheek. Anyway it´s light, easy to use and to maintain, totally accurate and really sturdy, working fine in ANY climate from the ice and snow of the Alps to the heat and sand of Australia! Two pressure points on the trigger allow you to decide between single round and fully auto and considering it was introduced back in 77 one has to admit it was WAY ahead of it´s time.
And yes, gas operation usually has three settings: Blank, standard cartridge & rifle grenade.
brilliant rifle. served me well in Afghan and Iraq. aussie army considering introducing the f2000 last i heard. i was given the chance to take part in the trials of the f2000 but it doesnt compare to the steyr in my opinion. if it isn't broke, don't fix it i think
Well the doctrine of the Austrian army is and always was: The Army doesn´t care what you like you have to make yourself fit in. And we don´t shoot with the left hand.
TJ Murphy Yeah, well, that’s not what it is called over here in the rifle‘s country of origin. The second setting has a way smaller gas port, otherwise even with the blank adapter attached you can shoot it as a bolt action rifle as the gas pressure will not be sufficient to cycle the gun. I guess we can agree on that.
Great job reviewing this weapon. I have 3 of them. One just like the one in your video and 2 special receiver models. One with a 3 to 9x scope and one with night vision. You might have mentioned that there is a 24" barrel with bipod available.
Now, the Tavor I kind of find ugly, but the AUG, I always found that to be rather sexy, which is odd because I'm more of a traditionalist. Nothing in my safes but wood and steel, except for the grips on my TT-33, P38, and CZ-75 Pre-B.
I was hoping he’d test out the fun switch 😂
hickok45 is wrong. The Steyer AUG 1 is the best looking gun ever made, especially without that grip at the front.
everyone has their opinions. I prefer bullpups, and carbine weapons. Some people really hate bullpup weapons and prefer longer weapons like the M16.
Dauntless Slayer I like The M4a1 and the M16 as well (based solely on looks and history, I have never officially fired one as of yet, nor bullpups.) If the world went to hell and I found an m16 or M4a1 I would use it without hesitation. Still, I would personally want to own A bullpup rifle, especially a Tavor-21, Steyr AUG, and a P90. I'm not Discounting the performance of the M4 or m16 at all, far from it, they must be doing something right if the U.S military is still using them. But I just like the look of shorter weapons, Bullpups and Carbines are more my taste. like the G36c.
Ever notice how often it's used as a ray-gun in sci-fi movies and TV shows? I'm sure they think it's pretty.
I love the look of the steyer aug.

i love the steyr AUG and FAL
Both gay
"The fun switch." Classic.
Here have a like tick:)
In January 1989 I was at the 6th Royal Australian Regiment when F88 Austeyr was first issued at battalion level. I kid you not when I say "They arrived wrapped in stretched plastic and in cardboard box's." You think they went down to woolies and got them on special. It took a day of hands on training and the next day we were of to the range. Usually the average shooting score with the L1A1 SLR was between 80 and 100 out of 140. On the first day of shooting no one and I mean no one got below 136 out of 140. They had to change the way you got your crossed rifles because how easy it was to use. Before we got the F88 Austeyr, the defence force did an extensive durability test against the M16 and the F88 Austeyr won hands down. The report is declassified now and it is on the internet. I loved this weapon so much, until I was made number one the gun and my personal weapon was now the MAG58. I had now found my new calling. To all members of the defence currently serving "Thank you for your service."
9:05 In the Austrian army we were allowed to carry the StG77 A1 by the optic. I used this method on a timed 3,5km fast march and it worked great however it's a bit front heavy without a full magazine in it.
My favorite assault rifle of all times!
You are gay sir
Hahaha
People who call it ugly are ugly them self the Steyr AUG is a Beauty 10/10 my favorite Rifle
This gun is beautiful!!! especially compared to other bull pups. I cant believe he compared its ugliness to a glock :,(
As an Austrian i can say tha best Bullpup :D
The Steyr AUG was my favorite part about doing my mandatory 6 months of service in the austrian military. Haven't fired a whole lot of guns in my life but the STG 77 is so reliable and just feels so incredibly comfortable in your hands. Sadly they aren't available in this version to the civil market in Austria, would have to settle for different versions of it without the scope-iron sight combination in semi automatic.
And yeah, the trigger of the fully automatic version is kinda bullshit when the trigger is slightly worn out. More often than not I fired several shots instead of one, I guess the trigger mechanism was just quite worn out from all the soldiers wielding it before me. A switch to alternate between firing modes would have been nice.
It was really, really nice I gotta say. The ring in the middle that replaces the overlapping lines of the crosshair keeps your sight on the target clear and there's nothing to obstruct your view. And the iron sights on top of the scope was alright, just used it like once cause a support unit doesn't get much time on the shooting range.
+MightyPootisFish is it true that Aug is able to change the barrel length at any time for urban combat
Not that I'd have ever heard of that being done in combat, but you can in fact pull out the whole barrel (with the front grip) and replace it with a barrel of different size. It's quite interesting how easy to disassemble the weapon is.
+Michael Park Yes thanks to its modularity, you can change the barrel from CQB to LMG
I‘m in the Austrian army and our Sturmgewehr 77 (military name) has a cross and a circle in its visor
The Best Gun 💪🇦🇹🇦🇹🇦🇹
Gayest design ever
This is also the primary rifle used in the Australian and New Zealand army.
The Australian version is the F-88 Austeyr, it's a modified version, so not technically the same. Not sure if NZ use a modified version too
In New Zealand they used both the AUG and F88 but nowadays you'll see the F88 more.
Cam Brennan hey cam! Whats the difference between the f-88 and the original?
Luke Barratt the F88 has a bayonet lug and a 1:7 rifling similar to most AR-15s and M16s to fire M855 ball
ForTheHonor Austria, Europe. Not Australia.
Irish army standard issue also. Loved this rifle
austrian weapons...always a good choice when you want product reliability...keep it simple that works the best. nice vid
weapon of choice of the Australian army :)
Ben Ghazi the australian army uses a different variant. F88 austeyr
@@punker8716 basically the same gun, but now they use the ef88 would love to see hicock do a review on the us civi version f90
@@punker8716 the first aug the australian army used was just an aug like austria used (the Aug A1) but they called it differently
I stand corrected. The F88 is the Aug A1.
Ah i remember cleaning this every day while in military service. Really nice weapon to handle and to shoot.
Aug will always be my favorite type of looking rifle idky just looks beautiful
how is the AUG anyway? i hear it's older then most "modern weapons"
+releasethekraken in austria it´s also called STG77 (sturmgewehr 77 = assaultrifle 77) so it´s gotta be from around that time...
Ar15 is from the 50‘s
Johnny Mellon first used in 78
You're a damn fine shot, sir.
quite right
I trained on one of these early versions. Excellent weapon. Just found this vid, can't believe you can own this as a civilian. Cheers from Aus
Australia didn't adopt it until the late 80s. I transitioned from L1A1 SLR to the Steyr in 1989 - a big step down from 7.62mm, but a lot of fun to shoot. We're still using them, albeit a much newer version.
After 20 years in the Australian Airforce, I spent the first 14 years shooting the 7.62 L1A1 SLR, then we converted to the Steyr, and all I could think was.....I miss my SLR.
I started in 3 RAR on one of these. 5.56 x 45mm , 42 round capacity at 3,084 fp/s and 650 rounds / min .(locked into my brain forever lol) I was hooked from the get go but I was a good shot with it so I guess I'm kinda biased as i never fired the SLR but dating back to 1970 I believe it was a tried n true weapon that deserves a place in the fall of fame especially being Australian built instead of the Steyr being Austrian.
Know the feeling. When we changed from the G3 to the M4 I was pretty underwhelmed.
I remember shooting SLRs as a cadet at school. They were great! One year at Bisley the army were coming round touting the SA80. Nobody was impressed at all - not nearly as pointable, and really awkward for snap shooting. The workaround was to adopt a carry that held the rifle in the shoulder, which took some getting used to. It may be inherent with bullpups in general, but I always felt it was more to do with the massive weight of the SA80. I never understood why the British army didn't just license the AUG if they wanted a bullpup.
The S,L,R was the fukin dogs Bollocks, wasn't it ??? Changing to the S,A,80 had the same disappointed fukin attitude amongst us Brits!!!
This was my weapon when i was in the army in austria! We had the stg 77 ad the garde company wich is the honor division had the stg 58!
weapon of choice of the Irish army
That and the red book
Every 10 yr old is screaming fortnite right now
you missused the pin that holds the buttplate in... you should have pushed it in then removed the buttplate and then remove the triggergroup. trust me i had to to many pushups because of this and i was in the austrian military so they should know what they are doing, however its not that bad you did not have weapon training for this specific rifle...
i recall hours of cleaning this gun in austrian army 🤣
we took it to the shower (w/o the barrel, of course)
One thing about the acronym AUG from an austrian citizen. The german word for "Eye" is "Auge", which is the same in austrian german. But it is also widely common to say "Aug" instead of "Auge" when your referring to "Eye" in austria. Hence the rifle has the scope attached to it, which also aids to it's distinctive design. And hence EVERYBODY in austria calls it "Aug" (not AUG), I feel very confident to tell you that it's more than just acceptable to call it "The Aug".
If I get the chance, should I buy it??
A buddy might sell me his
I like it, but I still prefer my M4. I wouldn't mind having one of those when I'm a civilian though.
Edit: I think my only problem with it is that I'm just not too comfortable with having my face directly above the chamber.
Bullpups work fine generally, and I guess anybody can get used to one; however, it's amazing how good a plain old M4 feels in your hands to operate after messing with a bullpup design for awhile.
Oh definitely, I agree. I got to try the Steyr AUG once during a joint training exercise with the Irish. I really liked their rifle, despite that minor personal preference of mine. They in return seemed to love how simple ours handled as well.
The SA80 that we are using in the UK now works fine after all the faults were ironed out and that is a bullpup design. It is capable of full auto, yet our troops never train with it in this mode. It has quirky features like, you can remove the trigger guard so you can fire it wearing mittens in cold climates. I would love to see you do a feature on this weapon. Love all the videos hickok.
It's all in your head, "Soldier."
Jim Garrison What is??
its the governors rifle
THE WALKING DEAD
AUG vs. pumpkin, that looks like very Styrian think...
