Lying takes effort, first coming up with the falsehoods and then keeping track of them. In general, people who don't want to spend unnecessary mental energy just tell the truth. Also, it can be a fine line sometimes, but there's a difference between tactfulness and lying, which she seemed to be trying to articulate here.
I hate lying too, but when comforting someone and the results they produced aren’t amazing I say something like “you tried your best, you worked really hard, and if you keep working hard you can get better and better, failure is painful and it fucking sucks, but you can at least derive a bit of usefulness and positivity from it by figuring out why you failed and try to learn how to do better in the future. Don’t let stumbling and falling stop you from getting back up and continuing to try.”
