I had a very dear friend who had polio when we were children. We grew up together. We went to college together. She got a job in human services and became a fierce advocate for the disabled. She married and retired after a 30-year career. She passed away 10 years ago from complications. I will never forget her.
Polio and the wards full of Iron Lungs are the first thing I mention whenever someone nudges towards a vaccine sceptical viewpoint. We take so much for granted, the things we're free from due to the efforts of others, and how recent it all is. Thanks again Gresham College and whoever maintains the channel.
My Mother got polio in 1952 and was an iron lung patient at Rancho Los Amigois in Downey. She was parlized from the neck down and on a resprator for the rest of her life. She lived to be 46 years old, was 26 when shen she fot it in 1952.
