All the names were related to colors, because in the original Parker Brothers game, each character was represented by a wooden place-marker, which were identical except for color. Later editions have seen them replaced with small plastic effigies based on the characters, and given them more developed back-stories and inter-relations (not in common with those in the film). I was glad we got so much running from room to room shown here, as that is the way the bulk of time is spent in the game as well.

The initial theatrical release had only one of the three endings - there were three different versions made, and which one you saw depended on what theater you went to. (The three versions of the film were identical until Wadsworth begins his explanation of who done it.) The home video release combined the three endings.

There was also a fourth ending filmed. it's referenced in the novelization, and the children's hardcover movie tie-in book actually has production photos of it. In it, Wadsworth is the primary killer, and he's finally done in by the dogs from the beginning. I wish there was a way to see that ending too.

The mansion in Clue was an actual mansion that was located in South Pasadena, California. Sadly, the mansion was destroyed by a fire in 2005. With the exception of the Ballroom scene (the Ballroom was in the mansion as well), all interior shots in the movie were filmed on sound stages at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
Clue was a flop when it was released in theaters, but has a decent cult following today.

  • @radwolf76

The best part about the third ending is that it pokes fun at the murder mystery cliche of "The Butler Did It", Other commenters have already mentioned this but let me just reiterate that watching Murder By Death is good for gaining insight into how Clue was inspired. If you'd like another movie based on a Board Game, there's Battleship, which pretty much killed the genre. The movie Jumanji was about a board game, and a board game was published under that name, but only as a tie-in for the movie, which had originally been adapted from a novel. The singing telegram girl was Jane Wiedlin, co-founder, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist of the Go-Gos. She also played Joan of Arc in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Since you asked, Jen, Clue was filmed on sound stages at the Paramount Pictures film studios in Hollywood. To decorate the interior sets, authentic 18th- and 19th-century furnishings were rented from private collectors, including the estate of Theodore Roosevelt. After completion, the set was bought by the producers of the TV show Dynasty, who used it as the fictional hotel The Carlton. All interior scenes were filmed at the Paramount lot, with the exception of the ballroom scene. The ballroom, as well as the driveway gate exteriors, were filmed on location at a mansion located in South Pasadena, California. This site was destroyed in a fire on October 5, 2005. Exterior shots of the Pasadena mansion were enhanced with matte paintings to make the house appear much larger.

Hey, Jen! Kudos for reacting to this movie! It's definitely one of my favorites!
I saw it in a theater and my multiplex in New York played all three options. You bought an A, B or C ticket which designated the auditorium the specific ending was featured in.
I bought the VHS and then the DVD. I must have seen this film over thirty times! It never gets old.
Tim Curry gives a tour-de-force performance as Wadsworth. The cast are all comedy greats in perfect sync with each other. It's a wonderful little gem.
There's been talk of a remake but this is a lightning-in-a-bottle situation like "Ghostbusters" or "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World!" A different cast would change the dynamic completely.
Another good comedic whodunnit is "Murder By Death" which features parodies of the great cinematic sleuths like Charlie Chan, Nick and Nora Charles, Sam Spade, Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple gathered together by real-life true-crime author Truman Capote.
Trivia unrelated to the production: Lesley Ann-Warren and Susan Sarandon have been mistaken for each other so often in real life that the actresses agreed to sign autographs using their doppelganger's name if erroneously requested by fans!

The game is basically a logic game where you have a limited numbger of clue cards (Who, what weapon, and which room) the other cards are divided between other players except for one of each type hidden card. (the solution). Through a series of turns you try to determine which cards are hidden and make a guess. If you are right you win if not you are eliminated and the others continue.

The names are based on the color of the players piece. (obviously) Three cards are placed in an envelope - person, place, and weapon. When you enter a room, you call a weapon and a character into the room. I forget how it all is determined, but you make a 'suggestion' and if a player has one of the cards, they have to show it to you, You mark on a sheet that the card has been shown, eliminating it as a possibility. At the end, one player declares the correct combination.
I say it was 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"! Yeah, Lennon was a terrible Clue player....
BTW... My version of the game had a pipe really made of lead, and the rope was a piece of twine. The toxic lead was soon determined too dangerous to include, and after that the rope and the lead pipe were replaced with plastic.

Clue the board game is basically a logic puzzle with a board, usually the characters have no backstories and there's nothing more complicated than "someone got killed, figure it out." There are some cute nods to the game in the movie, though, like characters having to push their way together through narrow spaces, and how you need to travel from room to room to pick up weapons in order to accuse someone, hence Tim Curry's frantic recreations in the endings.

To help you understand the ending, the premise of the board game involves the process of elimination and deduction. As you progress, you're shown cards to help narrow things down and at any point you can say "I accuse XYZ character killed Mr. Boddy in ABC room with 123 weapon". If you're right, you win the game but if you're incorrect, you're out. This is why Mr. Green says at the end "I killed Mr. Boddy in the hallway with the revolver".

In the game, you find out the killer, weapon, and room. Sometimes we'd put more than one killer in (or weapon or room) for fun.
Clue: Master Detective has additional suspects, rooms, and weapons.
The game called Whodunit also has motives.

There have been no remakes of this movie so far thankfully, as its a classic, but there was a British TV game show based on the same board game that ran for four seasons after this in the early 90's called "Cluedo" which is a heck of a fun watch as well, and can be found here on UA-cam. Each episode featured prerecorded story bits set in the mansion and it's surroundings. Which we're shown to the audience and the contestants of the show. The contestants then had to figure out who did the murder based on the video evidence and then the actors were brought in to the studio as their characters from the game and the contestants could ask them a question to help figure out who was guilty and they would answer in character. It was a fun game show. And worth a watch as it is easily found here on UA-cam. Oh, I should note that the characters in the game show do not match up with the way they're portrayed in the film. And Wadsworth and Yvette do not appear at all as they're not in the game. In the show all the characters are connected to the mansion in some way. A maid, a relative, a family friend, the lady of the manor, etc. Each of the four seasons featured a new cast playing the characters so that kept things fresh as new actors brought new elements to the classic game chatacters.

The six dinner guests with color-themed names are the only characters in the board game. There is a card deck containing suspects, weapons, and rooms. At the start of the game, one of each is placed in a secret envelope, and the remaining cards are handed out to the players. You then move around the board, gathering evidence that disproves every other possibility by trying to figure out which cards are being held and which ones are not. Once you've gathered enough evidence to rule out every other possibility with confidence, you make an accusation: which suspect, with which murder weapon, in which room. You then peek in the envelope. If you're exactly right on all three cards at the same time, you win, but if you're wrong about any of them, you're out of the game.
The rooms in the movie actually line up with the rooms in the board game, complete with which rooms are connected to which by the two secret passages.
Wadsworth, the Cook, Yvette, the Motorist, the Cop, the Singing Telegram Girl, the Fake Jehovah's Witness, and the entire FBI raid are all made up for the movie. Mr Boddy is real, but is dead before the game begins, so he doesn't get a token.
The story about why the characters are stuck in a murder mystery was also made up for the movie. At least in the era I played it, the board game had no explanation and no background information about the characters. They were literally just colored plastic tokens holding up a cardboard cutout of the character. Older versions just used painted wooden tokens, I hear.
Not my favorite childhood board game - YES CAPTAIN KAVOK! - but it's a LOT more fun than Monopoly.

Try Murder by Death. It was made about a decade before Clue. All the characters were based of tropes of the mysteries of the time with a Sam Spade type played by Peter Falke, A Butler played by the original Obi-wan Kenobi. Among others.

I've seen this movie and watched more reactions to it more times than I can count and I finally noticed a mistake. When the motorist is on the phone he is standing in front of a mirror that shows the fireplace in the room. When it rotates to reveal the secret passage it would be obvious to him. There is no way anyone could have came out of it and sneaked up on the motorist from behind without the motorist seeing ithem in the mirror.

A group here on UA-cam called Shipwrecked Comedy does kind of a version of this called Poe Party (the title is longer, but that is the gist of it) where each guest is a famous author. There is Edgar Allen Poe, Emily Bronte, Ernest Hemingway, George Eliot, etc. Of course it is supposed to be funny, so there is that.

To answer your request for movies made after popular board games, one in particular comes to mind. Have you seen the movie "Twister"?
As to the actors in the movie that you may have known from other movies.
The police chief, played by Howard Hesseman, was most famous for his role of burned out radio DJ, Johnny Fever on the classic 80s TV sitcom, WKRP in Cincinnati.
Christopher Lloyd, (Professor Plum) you already know probably from the "Back to the Future" franchise, but his springboard to stardom was the character he played (Reverend Jim) in another great '80s TV sitcom, "Taxi".
If you have seen a lot of Mel Brooks movies you probably already had the pleasure of seeing the comedy styling of actress, Madeline Kahn (Mrs. White). Most notably she played Lily Von Schtupp in "Blazing Saddles" but you may also remember her as the wife/bride in "Young Frankenstein.".
Martin Mull (Colonel Mustard) was a regular on the 90s sitcom "Roseanne" but he is probably best known for his role in two cutting edge Norman Lear 80s TV shows, "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and its spinoff "Fernwood Tonight" which also starred the late great comic actor, Fred Willard, as his sidekick..
You may have also seen Michael McKean (Mr Green) in "This is Spinal Tap" or "Best in Show" or in any number of other comedies. But the role that got him started was Lenny in the '70s sitcom "Laverne and Shirley".
Eileen Brennan (Mrs. Peacock) and Colleen Camp (Yvette) were mostly character actors and not known much for comedy. I think Eileen's most memorable role may be the Goldie Hahn movie "Private Benjamin". As for Colleen she had a small part in the '80s epic "Apocalypse Now", but she is maybe best known for the starring role she had in the '60s movie "They all Laughed". That movie is most remembered though as one of the few that starred Sharon Tate before she was killed.
And to round this out Miss Scarlet was played by Leslie Ann Warren, who was a critically acclaimed lead actress in a lot of 60s and 70s films (mostly dramas), but none that I'd guess you've ever heard of.

As a mystery, it doesn't really work. There aren't clues you can pick up on because of the three different endings. However, as a comedy this thing is a bloody marvel. The screwball-style, rapid-fire dialogue is wonderful, and Tim Curry's ridiculous levels of energy are something to behold.

How the board game is played is there are suspect, weopon, and room cars shuffle each one sepperatly and draw a random card from each deck and put it face down in an envelope so no player knows what's inside, the rest of the cards are dealt face down to each player, you have a sheet with all possible options on it, and mark off all the cards you have, and on your turn you move around the board and eventually ask other players 1 of all 3 options, and someone is supposed to show you 1 of those options, once you mark off enough options to make an accusation thenyou. Check the envelope if your right yiu win, if your wrong you are elemenated from the game.

A fun reaction, the game is fun to play but pretty simple. You need at least 3 or more for a good game. There are little hints all thru if you watch the movie real close suddenly someone is missing when they go from room to room and such. It's still a cute movie to watch from time to time.
