  • Splash Mountain Closed at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, but why did it have to? We explore the history of Splash Mountain, The Song of The South production, and Joel Chandler Harris' writings to have a better understanding of the decision that the Walt Disney Company had to come to. In the end we end with reflection and a bit of a challenge.
    Splash Mountain was my favourite ride at Walt Disney World and I will miss it but I am excited about where the future brings.

    Splash Mountain didn’t have to close. Unless you’re a senior citizen, you probably haven’t seen the movie that the characters are from. It was a ride about cute critters with a catchy tune. Plus, now, the America sings animatronics are gone. Oh well, there’s always Japan. Their Disney parks (not owned by Disney) are the best in the world and they honor Walt’s legacy better than the U.S. parks.

      I agree. Typically when I bring it up most people don't know or recognize the tie in with Song of South. Most people assume it to be an original story based ride like all other attractions in the parks. We aren't 100% sure if the America Sings Animatronics are gone though. Most of what we have seen is Magic Kingdom's version as Disneylands version hasn't opened yet which is where most of the original animatronics are being used. Also Star Tours still has two of the American Sings animatronics as robot droids, so they will still live on at least in the que. I did notice in the Magic Kingdom version one of the Bre Bear animatronics is re-used as Louis's butt, but that was the only re-scrapped animatronic I noticed in video ride throughs. Maybe one of the band animatronics is a re-used animatronic, but doubt it.
      As far as Japan's version, I do think eventually it'll be replaced as well because of the old controversy. It's sad and I do feel like we are killing off and original story telling attractions we do have, but not much we can do.

      This is the exact argument I was making at the end. If no one knows then why does it matter? Especially when kids have a chance to have representation. Something to think about at least.
      Rides close all the time. This one just happens to be a nostalgic one.
      Appreciate the comments folks :)

      It’s not an original story. It was IP based off a book.

      @@EpicDIZ when I was a kid (before the internet) I thought splash mountain was an original IP, but nowadays it is very easy to do research to see what the attraction is based on and why the IP is controversial. The attraction almost had the tar baby but thankfully chose to do the beehive instead.

      Exactly! You would never know the sanitization of the story that happened to make it into the ride unless you did a little reading. Thanks for commenting Corey!

    It didn't have to, Disney just did it because it was the easy way out and they made a big deal of Song of the South being the most racist thing ever

      I wouldn't say closing a beloved attraction and making waves and people upset was the easy way out. Easy would have been doing nothing.

    If your argument is for more representation in theme park rides, then build a new theme park rides instead of reskinning popular and beloved ones. It’s the same argument people make for the phenomena of taking existing characters in pop culture and race swapping them because companies don’t believe new characters will make money, when in actuality new characters are what people are craving. People Love Encanto. People love Princess and the Frog. However all Live Action Little Mermaid did was tell a story that was already told better. But then again, a live action remake of an existing animated classic isn’t gonna be that good to begin with.
    At at the end of the day, the new theming with Tiana’s Bayou Adventure did not live up to the old version of the ride. Gone is any semblance of suspense with the big splash, gone are the ICONIC SONGS from the ride, and gone is a wonderful ride that told an African American folk tale about there being no place like home.
    If what replaced the ride was better, I’d be less angry, because you are right, nothing lasts forever. Some rides do change, even if those changes make people annoyed or sad. If they had included Doctor Facilier in the attraction and made it scary/fun like the movie, it could could have been great. As it stands, it’s boring and not memorable. Meanwhile I’ll always remember Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah!
    Bottom line, this ride did not need to change. That’s my take and opinion.

    • @EpicDIZ
      @EpicDIZ  3 місяці тому +1

      There is only a few loud voices saying it didn’t live up.
      I think as theme park fans we forget that we are in the minority and that the normies are who the park is built for. The normies will love it.

    • @JumperTV33
      @JumperTV33 2 місяці тому +2

      @@EpicDIZ The normies also loved Splash Mountain, which to me was timeless. It was popular for a reason. So why change a good thing if normies won’t care one way or the other?
      I’m sure the ride is fun, nicely themed, and serviceable. Kids will enjoy it and adults too. But will I have chills seeing the vultures asking me “If this is your laughing place, how come you ain’t laughing?” as we slowly go up to the plummet? Will I remember the same songs years later?
      To me it’s a downgrade. But for the people who enjoy it, more power to them.

    I know no one wants to ask this question but I’m asking it:
    Would Disney have given Princess and the Frog a ride if Splash never existed and they weren’t desperate to get rid of it and “correct” the mistake? If Splash never existed and they wanted to make a PatF ride, I can’t imagine it would look like this.

    • @EpicDIZ
      @EpicDIZ  2 місяці тому

      I think that’s a valid question. I’m not crazy about the way in which it came, by shutting down one seemingly making up for it with the other. BLM should not have been the catalyst to want to include black stories in the parks and Disney universe.
      I can’t imagine a salt mine log flume would have been the best story telling method to deliver a PatF ride.
      Great comment. Thanks for watching and writing and starting a conversation.

    • @frankcarty
      @frankcarty 2 місяці тому

      I think it's more of a right place at the right time. The animatronics were old and often broken. I think the BLM accelerated the re-theme of Splash, would it have gotten the PATF re-theme if it wasn't for BLM, we'll never know. Either way, it's a great ride. I'm looking forward to riding it again with the new theme.

    The ride just deserved a better retheme. Tiana’s is bland and lacks the soul and spirit that Splash had. It told a story, and Tony Baxter said that’s the main problem with the new theme. There’s no way you could think the retheme is better. I am just thankful I rode it twice and one still exists in Tokyo!!

  • @Aisha.The.Traveler

    As a black Disney lover, I think they should have kept it Splash Mountain and maybe just like they recently did with the New Country Bears Jamboree, just update a few characters but let it remain majority the same.
    Plus Tiana could have had her own brand new ride not the re-themed mess that they made of it. 🤦🏾‍♀️

  • @frankcarty
    @frankcarty 2 місяці тому

    I had never heard of the film Songs of the South until I heard of the re-theme that splash mountain was getting. I would hazard a guess that the majority of people that have been on the ride would be in the same boat (no pun intended!). I would say the main reason for it's closure in 2023 for the re-theme was more to do with the animatronics being less reliable.
