When I'm editing my own creative photos, I love to toss an anamorphic crop on them and apply "cinematic" presets in Lightroom for fun just to reimagine certain shots as shots from a film. It's a lot of fun to play with and sometimes find edits that really work
Thanks 🙏
The street footage really gives a film vibe, super cool!
JJ Abrams single-handedly ruined lens flares (and Star Trek) for me. When I see them now, I immediately think trashy gimmick. For this reason alone, I no longer want to use anamorphics.
It's funny I came across this video when I was THINKING about using this same setup for the same thing. Well done 👍🏾
Damn. Gotta subscribe with this gem. Really unique look, great explanation. Maybe started a little slow with the good stuff but worth the wait... like a good story teller / movie. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to more gems in the future.
I see color grading issues, I have this lens and I think the blue glass in front affects the footage a lot
There´s a movie with Tom Hardy called "Locke" where stretched lights become the co-stars. I liked the treatment a lot in part because the flare was very well contained. I think the red flare lens suits better most of the situations.
Honestly anamorphic is my end all be all. It's got so many great qualities, and it being so imperfect I love them all. I want to get my hands on the 1.6x FF versions. The only issue I find annoying is the flare, specially cause I love shooting at night and I think it'd be flare city.
I've shot on 2x anamorphic Atlas Orion lenses with a matte box, and that plus keeping lights away from the camera helped a lot. I've also shot with other anamorphic lenses and without a matte box so that I would get flares. You can stop down a bit to control the lights, too. I have a JTZ DP30, which is perfect, as well as two other matte boxes - one of them is the Smallrig in this video. I think the sides are too shallow to get the flares to go away with the Smallrig box, but the JTZ or something like a Bright Tangerine with 3 flags would do it. Best of luck!
Hope you get a full frame version!
Viewing your NYC footage - it appears (to me) that you've overlooked using the desqueeze, or that the factor value (1.33x) was incorrectly used during post. The NYPD officers at 12:08 aren't anatomically "normal" in appearance. They are taller/thinner, and the body proportions seem off. This can also be seen in other "people" scenes from your street images. You may wish to check the factor by recording a circular object (dinner plate) and running that video through your post process, adjusting the factor until you see a plate which is truly circular.
Yeah, it seems like another issue is a variable squeeze factor depending on the focus distance.
I just bought this exact lens. I have found if I stretch it out at 1.33x the stretch is a little too much. Stretching it out to a 2.18:1 seems to be the sweet spot. Don't hold me to that, it could just be my camera. I have been using it for photography, and I didn't take into account how unusual the print sizes would be. Overall I love it. Still learning.
The only thing I like about anamorphic is the wider aspect at same fov compared to a spherical lens. I hate the flares, hate the lack of critical focus on some of them and most of all hate the blurriness that appears all over the top and bottom of the image. It drives me crazy in movies and shows. It makes characters legs or really anything completely blurry and detached.
That's pretty rad. Continuing to push the envelope. Way to go man.
beautiful.....
Dudddeee that footage looks amazing
My clients would have sued me when they would have seen the blue flares all over the place. 🙂
Haha this was all just bonus stuff, so no issues really.
so you get the full horizontal resolution but loose vertical res. when you de squeeze?
You basically gain horizontal resolution in a way
I have the full frame 1,6 squeeze set of Sirui, but living in Belgium, it ‘s not going to be easy to get them at your place. And actually I’m using them a lot these days, because I have a few clients who love the results. 1,6 squeeze is a heavy squeeze, but so nice to make epic shots and so easy to make it cinematic. And it’s a shame that even the fx9 doesn’t desqueeze properly in the fiewfinder, so you realy need the monitor on top. But all that said, it’s an affordable anamorphic set, with all the benefits and technical errors you expect from these lenses. I got them now for two months, but allready had a lot of fun…
I’m not trying to be rude but that footage at 14:33 looks a little compressed still (animorphically). It looks like it needs to be stretched out more. Just thought I’d point that out in a friendly way haha.
You messed up the de-squeeze there bud.
Just ordered the Blazer Remus 45, 65, and 100mm with the amber flares, think this will be more applicable to weddings. Will have to see how it all works out. I only want to use them for speeches, environmental shots and reception. I do think they can be over used.
Those look so so so good
Hi… very informative video, well done… do you remember your slowmo camera settings on the A7RV with this lens? Regards… Ron
you have to use a ball on your hand to find the correct squeeze factor for the fx30 because all the footage at the end of your video is not correct, everything is lookig vertically uncompressed, just take a look at the car wheels at 13:20 (ovals and not circles)
Thanks for this video it was really helpful to me since I am in this predicament with this exact setup. I have budget for the FX3 and want an Anamorphic for it however the full frames are out of my reach at the moment and the APSC ones are cheap.
that is my favorite song by san holo!
I hope your client liked looking as if they were on the street in an action movie with those blue streaks. That's art. Everyone sees it differently, but in my opinion this video should be titled How to Not Use an Anamorphic Lens for Wedding Portraits.
😂
I wouldn’t want that blue line showing up in every frame though… it wears out it’s welcome after a few scenes
Since you partner with Moment it would be interesting if you compared this to their upcoming Anamorphic Adapter
I’ve been requesting it for months :)
Seems you are playing with Dehancer as well ;-)
Do you stretch the footage in post? Would you transform the photos then too?
Yes
what is the small rig follow focus that you are using there - did you like that? i got the 50mm f/1.8 for my birthday and need to get a focus item to work with my dji gimbal
Cool, but 1.33x squeeze kinda sucks. Wish there were budget 1.8x to 2x squeeze lenses
same
Is red halation ( not sure if it's spelled that way) common in these lenses? Or do you have a filter that's adding extra diffusion. I'm trying to build a digital alternative to cinestill 400d
That effect is only possible on motion film as it does not have a backing like photography based films. The diffusion or blooming effect though can be acquired with a promist filter.
I added that halation [a bit too heavy handed on some tbh, but I didn’t want to go back and fix it] in the free version of Resolve so I could try and better replicate that vintage film look.
So much CA… lens or sensor?
Would you suggest the SURUI over the MOMENT adaptor?
The Sirui is great if you want to buy a few different focal lengths or just stick with one. The nice part about the Moment is the ability to just use existing lenses and toss it on the front. It's big and heavy, but that's sort of the trade-off.
It should be great to shoot 60p on an A7IV ❤️
that blue stripe is a little bit annoying...
Hey Benj! Do you know what focal length you set the in body stabilization too? I just picked up the 35mm and did a few test shots without realizing the IBIS was set to 8mm and it ended up pretty wonky. Just curious if you need to tell the camera you have a 50mm or something on to account for the zoomed in factor on a full frame.
hi, did you figure this out? i have an fx3 and im getting really wobbly videos :(
I set mine to 50mm for this video
I have dark corners whenever I film on my anamorphic lens. How can I remove them? Please advise. Thank you.
Which setup are you using?
@@benjhaisch Benj, thank you for the response.
My setup currently:
Sony A7V
SIRUI 35mm F1.8 1.33X Anamorphic Lens APS-C Cinema Lens
My confusion begins with desqueezing my footage. Do you have an email or Instagram I can send you an example of what I recorded yesterday? I tried desqueezing but my footage still looks like a fish eye footage.
What’s your process with picture? You have to go through ps?
Yeah you need to desqueeze in one of the editors
Let's make a count of how many times I say *cinematic*
Ok bby girl. We will see
i just bought the SIRUI 50mm f1.8 1.33X, but i just realized that it isnt full frame, does it work for the SONY FX3? can i still get a squeezed/ wide image from it? :(
Isn't there an APS-C mode on that camera?
Not in 4k
@@benjhaisch Do you really need 4K?
Maybe I can help with out to pronounce the name of this lens maker - there are an almost infinite number of ways on UA-cam it seems. It is pronounced "SIR-OO-EE"......
no joke, I would have never pronounced it the way I did either, but I think I heard @geraldundone mention that this was the correct pronunciation in one of his videos, but again, who knows :)
Question. I'm a Newbie to the Sony FX3. I have a SIRUI 35mm. I can't seem to get the full frame using my Sirui Lens. Is there a setting inside of the FX3 that will show full frame instead of the Circle Look? Also stop by and check out my Unboxing Of Sony FX3
I am sure glad that I only paid $300 for this SLR Magic adapter new. I am not that impressed with Anamorphic anymore. This adaper cured me.
Footage looked great ,but the flaring was obnoxious
Good: footage looks great! Bad: WAY OVERUSED SLO-MO! It's so tiresome and everyone overuses it these days. To me it's lazy filmmaking. I do use it myself but I make sure to use it sparingly.
Definitely not my favorite scope. At 1.33x the characteristics that give anamorphic it’s characteristics are not really there, well at least not in any real measure unless your all about the super saturated sci-fi blue flares. The Sirui has a bad problem with inconsistent squeeze factor as well. If looking to stay on a budget I think the Aivascope paired with some Leica R’s or Vazen is the way to go…
For sure, still fun to try out on a budget :)
@@benjhaisch for sure. I think I may have let my PTSD of when I owned a set of those and had to deal with squeeze factor being moving target ( and it being a job on a tight deadline ) come though. You made them shine though 👍🏼
Worth mentioning that some 20k anamorphic lens also lack a constant squeeze ratio so, I wouldn't be too hard on that point
Yeah the flare is too much
Intro got that fake cinestill 800t look
Used a vintage lens design at f/0.95 so it really accentuated a few of those features
I really don't see the point. Wedding videos are supposed to have an intimate feel. The anamorphic format destroys all of that.
They’re supposed to have whatever you want them to have :)
When life is all in slomo.
Once any style gets to wedding photography and video, that style is dead. Sorry. 'Cinematic' is now 'NPC Wedding' vibes. Thankfully, most people don't watch other people's wedding stuff...
I was interested in "portraits" and "street photography." This wasn't that.
Did you see the wedding portraits? Or the street images?
