Team 721 Challenge
Friday 2nd February at 02:30 AM local time, Nick Hollis, onboard his boat “Kraken” crossed the finish line of the World’s Toughest Row in a time of 50 days, 20 hours and 49 minutes. Arriving as this years 27th boat and 6th solo. Throughout the day and night, dot watchers have been able to witness how the weather was not doing Nick any favours. Nothing was given for free during his approach to the island and each time the oars were put down Nick went South, creating a bit of a stairway line on the YB map. It was only thanks to Nick’s relentless hard work on the oars which resulted in a perfect finish in to English Harbour where a late night crowd awaited including many fellow ocean rowers. 🏁
Did you wonder what the campaign name ‘721’ stands for? Here we go… it’s the 7 summits (already completed!), 2 poles (South pole done and North pole to be done in a few weeks time!) and 1 ocean (now completed✊🏼). Being an international mountaineer Nick has achieved quite a lot and with the 721 campaign soon to be completed, he has definitely marked himself as a true adventurer of our time!
The row did not happen without its challenges. Rudder failure, broken daggerboard, failing auto helm and a lost drogue are just a few of the issues to be mentioned that made the 3,000 mile crossing one to remember. However, they also showed our rower that he has been able to keep his focus and deal with the problems as they came along. An example is Nick’s homemade daggerboard; made out of the broken rudder (that was replaced with the mandatory spare rudder). A solution that for sure saved Nick some days on the Atlantic.👏🏼
