The original version of this lullaby is called "Rorogwela" and it's from Solomon Islands, The oldest recording of it is that from a person named Afunakwa and was recorded in 1970 and the lyrics translate to: Young brother, young brother, be quiet You are crying, but our father has left us He has gone to the place of the dead To protect the living, to protect the orphan child.
@@tuulikannel It didn't ruin it for me, I suppose it's like a folk song, kinda like somebody covering "happy birthday to you", just because the recording is older does not mean it's also the origin of the song.
Do you know why I love this song so much? The words to this song are sung in my great-grandmother’s native tongue. She and her family before her were taken from their native lands and brought to Australia as slaves. This song provides a link to my ancestors and their stories. I fell in love with this song when I was 10 years old or so, I’m now 38 and my love for this song has never diminished.
I spent time growing up in Vanuatu ( this song is Solomons) that actually did happen , it was called Blackbirding and most people in Australia wouldnt have heard of it

It was 1994 I put my foot in a new Horizon the Land of Australia. This song was in SBS TV , Rage. It left an ingrained memory of embracing a land and people you have never known as your country and as your people. Now Proudly Australian.
My sister showed me this song in the early 2000s, before she left us in 2021 due to COVID. Listening to it now transports me back to those good moments we shared together. Each note reminds me of her laughter and the joy we experienced. Though she is no longer physically here, her essence lives on in every chord, filling my heart with cherished memories.
I've been searching for this song for literally DECADES! When I started this video my hopes weren't high but as soon as those first notes hit it was light lightning. Gonna listen to this on repeat for a few decades now to make up for lost time. Such a beautiful song.
I am almost moved to tears. My dad used to play this song on his car stereo when I was a kid. Very nostalgic feeling now. Indeed, we are all humans and need to love and tolerate one another. No matter the race, religion or ideology. Peace to the world.
It really does! I decided to find this wonderful song for the same reason. Knowing that so many people feel the same as I do makes things seem better to me than they really are. Take care and may we always have hope for the future, notwithstanding any trial we may experience....

Man, what a nostalgic trip down memory lane! I first heard this back in 1997 during my college days in East Africa, and it stayed with me until 1999 but unfortunately, I lost my cassette recorder and couldn’t listen to it anymore. For over 25 years, I kept that classical tune in my mind, searching everywhere for it. Thanks to Google, I was able to hum it, and it led me straight to this link. I can’t describe the joy and emotions this brings back, memories of old friends and my younger days. truly incredible!
I remember when I was still a child, in the 1990s watching this play on MTV Canada. I have never forgotten since, the feeling that I had watching and hearing this that the people of the world were so beautiful and that there was so much to see beyond my small house.
in all honesty... I don't think I could or can really say it enough....this Director deserves non-stop accolades for this work...it's sheer brilliance' of how it affects one's mind and vision...and opens you up to various cultures from far off places that more than likely.. you may never go or experience... I remember this video being played on SBS at times in the late 90's - then we shifted back to NZ and no SBS - a real bugger, it was the best channel of all that I've ever seen
I used to play this song a lot when I was a teenager. My dad would listen to it and really liked it to the point where he wanted me to burn him a cd with that song, so I did. He would always remember me with that song. He passed away a few days ago, and now I play this song, too, in his memory. I had read the lyrics but didn't think much of it back then. Now I read the lyrics again and it hits me in the heart.
Brings back memories of SBS in Australia. The original lyrics of the traditional Baegu lullaby "Rorogwela" from the Solomon Islands, which inspired Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby," along with their English translation, are as follows: **Original Lyrics:** ``` Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri Tabe ta wane initoa te ai rofia Sasi sasi ae kwa dao mata ole Rowelae e lea kwa dao mata biru I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri (repeat x 3) ``` **English Translation:** ``` Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you? Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place Little brother, little brother even in the gardens This lullaby continues to the different divisions of the garden From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you? Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us (repeat x 3) ``` These lyrics depict a touching scene of an older brother comforting his younger sibling, both orphans, with assurances of protection and guidance from the spirits of their ancestors.

After so many years, this song still feels as moving as the first time I heard it. Listening to it today brings tears to my eyes, reminding me of the beauty and complexity of life on Earth. Thank you, Afunakwa, the female voice behind "Rorogwela Lullaby", for your timeless singing ❤
I remember our local TV station used to play this video/song every weekend. As a kid I felt a sense of positivity and tranquillity. Now I'm 40.. and when ever I hear this it brings a great wave of nostalgia. When world was kind, people were good and everything was possible
One of most beautiful songs, I’ve so far had the pleasure of hearing. The beats to the lyrics which tell a deep cutting story about 2 brothers. I’ll be having this played at my credits. 💯❤️
This song is very special to me and to my older brother. I first remember hearing it when I was 6 or 7 back in the early-mid 90's sitting in the back seat of my dads jeep as we drove through the Appalachia mountains in western NC while it was foggy and raining, and I have never forgotten that moment. It was always my favorite track out of the hundreds of mix tapes my Dad would listen to, and it must have been to my older brother as he recently asked me if I remember it as I've never told him how it was special to me. Anyways this song always reminds me of my father and to me it represents the song of Earth and decency in humanity. I'm really not the sentimental type as I've gotten older and my father is still alive, but I get the strongest emotions out of this track like no other song I've listened too and I always have to try to hold back tears listening to it. If we ever send out another golden record into space like the one on the Voyager this track needs to be included.
Mid 90s, I was in grade 4 or so..... This video taught me how to see life, my elder brother (in his teens back then) showed me this told me what was happening..... He is a blessing in my life
That song speaks to something deep inside of me, especially during this time. Praying for healing for my fellow humans of this beloved planet. I get chills every time I hear it.
The lyrics tells a story of a baby who dies from starvation. The original and complete song describes the horrors of a mother who see her baby dying. I dont think this one is a relaxing song.
No it doesn't.. Iam from the neighbouring Islands of the Solomon Island where the song Originates and the song is of care given as a tribal responsibility to a baby whose parents have passed on ❤ @@sergioaraya681

I don't know why, but damn was it frustrating. So glad to have finally found it (with some help!). This is such a childhood song for me and it feels fantastic to have access to it again. Thank you so much for this absolute classic.
This song as always brought me great joy. As some people below have mentioned it has an even stronger pull on me years later. The images in the video are showing how we are so far apart but so close at the same time. This is extremely powerful in 2021.
This song is Originated from SOLOMON ISLAND by an old woman. The language is in the dialect from my region where i come from in MALAITA PROVINCE. Just to clear the Air here..
There are some instances where ‘cultural appropriation’ does some good in the world and this beautiful song is one of those instances. It’s important to recognise, however, the cultures where such wondrous things originate and they should be recognised and honoured and thanked for this gift. Their contribution to making life a little less horrible in this day and age should be respected and known. It would only ADD to its magic. I am glad someone has given this beautiful gift to a wider audience but it could have been handled better: not crediting the real originators is unacceptable. I like this clip though as it takes us around the world and back to home x
@@mindrolling24 so, lets enjoy and share and be gratefull for the vibe, sound and feel. This song might mean many different things to many different people, together we can honor the old lady that sang by reminding the world; she StilL Matters 💘
This song started playing in a cafe a couple days ago, and I suddenly started crying. I was sure I knew it, but didn't remember when I had heard it before. I had completely forgotten about it, but my heart hadn't, somehow. I finally remembered it was about fifteen years ago, in a very challenging time of my life. Such a beautiful and surprising moment. Praying for all of us, and the Earth, to find peace.
I had never heard this song before, and it appeared as the background for a video on TikTok. It touched me so deeply that I researched it, the ancestral vocals, and the concept of the video clip... in short, everything I could reach. And it's enchanting!! Music truly is life!
However, the original version is from a person called Afunakwa. She was singing a lullaby to her brother after the demise of their father. She consoles him that he had gone to look after them in faraway lands
The original chant is a 'rorongwela',or lullaby,from the mountains of malaita..like most epic chants,lullabies,etc.,it is sung in a sort of 'high tongue',which has mostly gone out of use,and which makes some of the words rather hard to translate..the little that i could catch would probably go something like, "Little sibling,little sibling We are a sorry couple You and i You can cry all you want There's no-one else to rock you to sleep Nobody else will look after you We are orphans,little sibling.."
This track is so inspiring. I come back to it time and time again. The lullaby soothes and it requires a certain mindfulness. The video is very thoughtful and again, it inspires one to mindfulness. The fact that they sampled indigenous people's lullabies and crafted such a holistic track from their sampling research just doubles the enjoyment of their efforts. Thank you for this track. I shared this with someone who had never head it and their response was "this is beautiful" and that pretty much sums this track up. Thank you for making this track a "thing"

👍🏻 SBS used to play this all the time as a time filler/ad break.
This melody is still transcending in 2024
it takes me back, holds me together, gives me hope...mostly memories
one of the most beautiful videos ever made
Authentic voice of grandmother Afuna of Baegu, Malaita Solomon islands. Listening in 2020.
I've been searching for this song for literally DECADES! When I started this video my hopes weren't high but as soon as those first notes hit it was light lightning. Gonna listen to this on repeat for a few decades now to make up for lost time. Such a beautiful song.
UA-cam is a great thing. May it last for ever.
Eric is still producing great music as Deep Forest.
Same here😭

Sweet 90s. That music has a soul... Never gets old!
32 years have passed since this song released. how time flies. the 90s were really something.
I am almost moved to tears. My dad used to play this song on his car stereo when I was a kid. Very nostalgic feeling now. Indeed, we are all humans and need to love and tolerate one another. No matter the race, religion or ideology. Peace to the world.
I'm going to carry it on...thumbs up if you are listening in 2020 during the covid19 pandemic.This song unites.
I went looking for this feel-good snapshot of humanity. In lock down in New Zealand.
It really does! I decided to find this wonderful song for the same reason. Knowing that so many people feel the same as I do makes things seem better to me than they really are. Take care and may we always have hope for the future, notwithstanding any trial we may experience....
@@mefee777 And kia ora from the northern hemisphere! New Zealand will always be very special to me. Apart from its breathtaking beauty, it's a place where my dearest friend lives.
I am here
I've been listening to this song for 30yrs or more and it always bring back bitter sweet memories, such a beautiful song....
This song needs 100 million more views! It never gets old!
I 😘 ve this song. It's Universal. Namaste (We are 1). Deep Forest and Enigma just take me to a different world of Love, Bliss, Positivity and Hope.❤❤❤
You summed it up beautifully!!!!
To me it's like the promo video for Roam by the B-52's. Same sort of theme.
😢 absolutely Agree...
in all honesty... I don't think I could or can really say it enough....this Director deserves non-stop accolades for this work...it's sheer brilliance' of how it affects one's mind and vision...and opens you up to various cultures from far off places that more than likely.. you may never go or experience... Brilliant'
It’s directed by Tarsem Singh, the director of The Cell, Immortals, and Mirror Mirror :)
Got hold of it on an audio cassette back in 1994. I was mesmerized ❤. Still am.
I remember this video being played on SBS at times in the late 90's - then we shifted back to NZ and no SBS - a real bugger, it was the best channel of all that I've ever seen
SBS in the 90s was something special.
December 2019... thumb it up if you are a generation that grew with Deep Forest !!!!
Love this tune I remember swimming with my old pal in the 90s hahahaha

I used to play this song a lot when I was a teenager. My dad would listen to it and really liked it to the point where he wanted me to burn him a cd with that song, so I did. He would always remember me with that song. He passed away a few days ago, and now I play this song, too, in his memory. I had read the lyrics but didn't think much of it back then. Now I read the lyrics again and it hits me in the heart.

Brings back memories of SBS in Australia.
The original lyrics of the traditional Baegu lullaby "Rorogwela" from the Solomon Islands, which inspired Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullaby," along with their English translation, are as follows:
**Original Lyrics:**
```
Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu
Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau
Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
Tabe ta wane initoa te ai rofia
Sasi sasi ae kwa dao mata ole
Rowelae e lea kwa dao mata biru
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
Sasi sasi ae ko taro taro amu
Ko agi agi boroi tika oli oe lau
Tika gwao oe lau koro inomaena
I dai tabesau I tebetai nau mouri
(repeat x 3)
```
**English Translation:**
```
Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you?
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Just like royalty, taken care of with all the wisdom of such a place
Little brother, little brother even in the gardens
This lullaby continues to the different divisions of the garden
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
Little brother, little brother, stop crying, stop crying
Though you are crying and crying, who else will carry you?
Who else will groom you, both of us are now orphans
From the island of the dead, their spirit will continue to look after us
(repeat x 3)
```
These lyrics depict a touching scene of an older brother comforting his younger sibling, both orphans, with assurances of protection and guidance from the spirits of their ancestors.
Thank you do much
This song has always been an absolute masterpiece.
I remember being a teenager when this came out...now i play this to my baby to sleep at night. He falls asleep to it everytime he hears it. ♥️♥️♥️
I also play this song to put my baby to sleep. :)
Are you from Kenya?
Beautiful post. Tell your dad and brother that you love them.
Mid 90s, I was in grade 4 or so..... This video taught me how to see life, my elder brother (in his teens back then) showed me this told me what was happening..... He is a blessing in my life
Probably one of the most beautiful videos ever made.
This song has comforted 2 generations of my family since it came out.
😂😂

This takes back to when mtv actually was a music channel. Back in the 90s
Loved this song from years ago its pure

Beautiful song and even more beautiful music video. Seriously, some of the best I have seen.
That song speaks to something deep inside of me, especially during this time. Praying for healing for my fellow humans of this beloved planet. I get chills every time I hear it.
Beautiful comment. Wishing you much peace and healing.
Love your thoughtful comments thinking of others , this is a brilliant song, seems u think so tune XX
The lyrics tells a story of a baby who dies from starvation. The original and complete song describes the horrors of a mother who see her baby dying. I dont think this one is a relaxing song.
@@sergioaraya681Were you read this?
No it doesn't.. Iam from the neighbouring Islands of the Solomon Island where the song Originates and the song is of care given as a tribal responsibility to a baby whose parents have passed on ❤ @@sergioaraya681
Had no idea there was a video for this song. Somehow heard it somewhere, bought it on cassette and played it A LOT. ❤☮🌎

My Architecture lecturer showed this song to my class the other day... thought it sounded cool so I came to revisit
They played this on the Pedro Zamora Real World Tribute on MTV back in the 90’s. Stuck with me ever since
This song always bring tears to my eyes. Such a beautiful music and video!
I woke up with this playing in my head for a couple of mornings in a row, tried to find it and couldn't, forgot the melody but then woke up with it again. I don't know why, but damn was it frustrating. So glad to have finally found it (with some help!). This is such a childhood song for me and it feels fantastic to have access to it again. Thank you so much for this absolute classic.

I've been looking for this song for years....I can't believe it. It reminds me of my baby brother who is in heaven now.
Junior Gaza thanks for the background!
Afunakwa was her name.
You're a lie this is not any laugage dumb ass. he made this by bit and parts of pygmy chants
I've been searching for this song for over 20yrs.
Today is 16 Oct 2024, I finally found it. Thank you shazam
I had never heard this song before, and it appeared as the background for a video on TikTok. It touched me so deeply that I researched it, the ancestral vocals, and the concept of the video clip... in short, everything I could reach. And it's enchanting!! Music truly is life!
I didn’t expect this song to be so beautiful and emotional but damn, this is a masterpiece
That is the most fantastic thing I have ever seen. Deep Forest is a big part of my life. Greatest music I have ever known.
This song by Deep Forest is the compliment to the lullaby. It's very beautiful.
However, the original version is from a person called Afunakwa. She was singing a lullaby to her brother after the demise of their father. She consoles him that he had gone to look after them in faraway lands
Świat pełen dobra❤ i zła😢pełen kolorów❤ i czerni😢.Piękna kołysanka❤
The 90s !! Love it !! Life was so simple in those days.
The original chant is a 'rorongwela',or lullaby,from the mountains of malaita..like most epic chants,lullabies,etc.,it is sung in a sort of 'high tongue',which has mostly gone out of use,and which makes some of the words rather hard to translate..the little that i could catch would probably go something like,
"Little sibling,little sibling
We are a sorry couple
You and i
You can cry all you want
There's no-one else to rock you to sleep
Nobody else will look after you
We are orphans,little sibling.."
Beautiful and nostalgic song, reminiscent of a pure innocent world which is lost forever
I think back to the best years of my youth , and a tear runs down my face😢
dont we all? 🥲
