For locals, Thamel is not 'main-city'. For tourists, it's 'main city' as every another tourist stay there in Hotels. Since the costs are pricier, it's the last place where locals would go considering they have alternatives.
U may want to visit Nagarkot(hills,greenery & fresh air) & Bhaktapur is a famous place with so much of culture i.e temples.

ah okay, i think Nagarkot was on our list to visit but we just didn't have time becuase we only had like a day or two in kathmandu before our bus to pokhara
