In today's crazy world, productivity is on the minds of many. So what can science tell us about the human brain and productive work? How do we become more efficient at working, and spend less time working overall?

Unlike the violinists, I usually have 15-20 min of work then 90 min break.

When I played the violin I had a timer and I had to practice for EXCACTLY 1 hour a day and I hated it. I liked playing the violin at the start but when I improved and got better at it I had to practice an hour a day so it made me hate it. I tried to spend as much time as I could turning the pages, putting on harplex or whatever it's called in English on the bow, and going to the toilet to pee. If I was lucky my parents weren't at home and I moved around my violin, bow and notebooks and chair and read a book or played at the computer

MrEtmer I like thinking of horrible situations and trying to find solutions to them. Deliberately putting myself in bad situations sometimes really helps me to come up with really creative situations sometimes ending up with a better product. This is only to be used in emergencies or when you're up for some excitement. (Note: Failure is still possible of course, but the excitement attained by being at the brink of failure really sets your imaginative engine rolling. It's an awesome experience.)
Sometimes I really can't write about anything interesting with any more than a couple of a thousand words. Beyond that, something interesting has to happen or perhaps I'd have to allocate a lot of time towards thinking about something. That allows me to type about a lot!

It sucks feeling trapped when ya know ya should be doing what ya really gotta be doing, but simply aint moving.
Over the last few years, the two greatest things that I've learned were ..... . . .
    1.) Replace "I can" with "I must".
    And ...
2.) "Action" is the fundamental key to all success.
Two great quotes, yet although I've improved greatly, I still struggle.
My belief now is that it truly is a long process of slowly but gradually reprogramming the brain. And in order to win (being successful), ya gotta make it a habit.
    Simply because ..... . . .
    Winning, is a habit ~

I can never follow deadlines I set for myself, because I know beforehand that there will be no immediate negative consequence for it, thus more procrastination is possible. I always think 'I can do it tomorrow, because I want happy times in the moment, not in the currently non-existent future. I can't feel the future, thus I must be happy today.'
The problem is I think the same thing again, when tomorrow becomes today. And then it's the last possible day I can work, the workload is too high, and I give up entirely because now it seems impossible to do. After all, the consequence will only come tomorrow, so don't ruin today, the only moment I can ever feel now.

    • @ZiPolishHammer
      @ZiPolishHammer 10 років тому +40

When we put our work off we're sending it to someone else, our future self. That person doesn't feel the immediate ramifications of our actions, and we delude ourselves into thinking they have our back (after all they're us!) Once you start treating your future self like "The Bad Guy" and thinking of them as another person entirely it gets easier. That person is lazy, selfish, and unreliable; why would we trust them with our reputation and success.

+Humberto Dramisino I would like to see that. I have noticed this of the people I knew well both before and after they went to college. Before they had more common sense and less after? I don't mean that in a negative way, just an observation. Also noticed they seemed to perform smaller tasks slower than before.

I kind of disagree, I had people working with me with no knowledge about a specific topic that had more common sense than people with knowledge on same topic but with no or little common sense, that is the reason I was asking to make a study if possible, just curiosity.

Eee this is cool! I'm homeschooled, and it's hard sometimes to motivate myself to do all the work I need to do in a day. (I often find myself taking too many notes as well, and then one subject takes an hour & 30 minutes - when it could have taken just half an hour.) But this is pretty cool!

+Fahima Al Farabi I agree, when i was a kid and when everyone is a kid, we don't think about the effort we got to put, we just do it, we go play in the park with our friends everyday, and have fun, but we never said "I'm going to play with my friends in the park? but ill be moving and running, that is exhausting, ill be tired..." and things like that, we are smart enough and we want all the things in the easy way that our brain tells us "all" the work we will have to do about what we were thinking, that's why we got to force our selfs, i think the hardest thing is starting, but ones we do it we will be able to do it again a lot easier, JUST DO IT! :)

    • @hybby
      @hybby 9 років тому +1

What is your reason for wanting to write (example)? WHY do you want to write? What are you hoping to achieve? Is it something that you're naturally inclined to do?
Do you actually care about starting and finishing a writing project? :)

Also, how do you set up your environment when you're wanting to write? Do you have facebook, email, your phone, and a whole host of other electronics/whatnot on and around you? Random things dinging and pulling you out of focus? Or do you create a quiet space in order to sit down and write?
It takes 11 minutes to get back into a focus state, after being interrupted. That includes choices you make to switch to other focus.

    • @Niahc
      @Niahc 9 років тому +4

I would say some kinds of writing don't always have a clear end result. Maybe you are thinking of it as an endless process rather than something with a clear end result. In that case breaking it up into smaller chunks like the video mentioned could probably help. For me the effect is more powerful the smaller the task is, its much harder to quit in the middle of a sentence than in the middle of a long page

    Some notes:
    - ego depletion - willpower is like a muscle; it can be tired out if you overuse it!
    - how to finish something: just get started!
    - it's not as hard as you think; your brain just makes it seem that way
    - don't distract yourself with mindless tasks
    - Zeigarnik Effect - you'll want to finish what you start
    - time management
    - work deliberately, not more
    - work intensely with breaks
    - focus on hardest tasks
    - use disciplined scheduling
    - ex.) 90 min work, 15-20 min break
    - give yourself a deadline
    - use an accountability chart (time-logging)
    - column one: tasks finished

though you probably won't ever see my comment, here is my advice:
exercise is a great way to have more energy. It seems kind of counter intuitive, but people who exercise before sleeping tend to get deeper sleep. The amount of time you spend in bed is not the most important factor of sleep, the length and stability of rem cycles defines how well rested you are.
Meditation. There are plenty of five minute body scans and mindful exercises you can find on youtube. Short breaks can not only help with focus, but stress, anxiety, and depression as well.
Diet. Not as in start counting calories and only eating greens, but more as think about what you're putting into your body. Processed sugars offer very short lived energy. Choosing something with higher protein, like eggs for breakfast can really pick up your day. Fruits throughout the day offer many complex sugars that can heighten energy though out the day. Also your biological existance is a symbiotic relationship with bacteria. Micro-organisms that exist within your body outnumber your human cells 10:1. They exist off the food you use to nourish your body. The bacteria that exists is a product of what you choose to eat, and the cravings your body has actually accommodates the bacteria in your body.
Which leads me to my last point. These aren't things you can press a button and suddenly have huge change. You might actually feel worse your first day of a diet change. It takes time for your body and psychology to adopt new habits and enviroments. With persistence and dedication the outcome of these changes is increased energy and overall health.

I've been doing this and I've noticed, while all of this works for a while, I feel like it's getting worse and worse and I'm slowly slipping back to my old habits...
For example for studying, I make a schedule for months and then for each day and then I go to my study place to study and put on a timer, after the timer I take a break and then I continue..
At first it worked wonders but then slowly but surely I just got addicted to those small breaks and my brain could only be focused on the "ok, now there's X minutes left before I can go take a break.." so what happened was that my brain started multitasking on counting the time in my head while I was trying to concentrate on studying
and slowly all the studying I did was a waste of time as my brain only concentrated on the counting of time or remembering the schedule but not actually understanding what I've been reading or studying..
I also noticed that as I set a place for my study I'm now totally unable to study anywhere else, so if I for some reason am unable to go to that place, I will not be able to do any studying and I feel bad when it messes up my schedule.
For some odd reason I have no problems with changing other things such as start exercise routine or a diet (probably because I found some diets and exercise routines that are a perfect fit for me)..
I guess there must be other people with the same problem and if anyone has found a solution for this, it would be awesome to hear.
I'm now sticking with this as it is the only way to keep me somewhat on track, even though utterly inefficient imho:
Make a schedule in the morning, go to the study place, read, take a break, read, take a break and then after 10+hours of studying while learning nothing I go back home, have some free time (exercise and youtube + whatever), go bed and the next day rinse and repeat..

Try to visualize breaks as an unfortunate necessity rather than a reward. Think of it like a car that has to go through a maintenance routine every so many miles. While it's very important to take care of that need, improving your car's reliability is like steadily transforming yourself from a junkyard minivan into a Lamborghini. I guess what I'm saying is try visualizing incremental growth as the reward and breaks as an unfortunate necessity.

Whenever I have to write a huge 2000 word essay for University, I always set myself certain days in which to complete parts of that essay. I'd usually give myself 2 days to do research, and then 1 day per paragraph. So depending on the size of the essay It usually takes me abut 6 - 7 days to complete. Which is much more comforting and easier to accomplish than completing it in say 2 - 3 days. I also find that my paragraphs sound a lot better for I have a whole day to focus on one of them, and not worry about the others sounding just as good.

Writing down a realistic amount of tasks for the day is a great technique. I have noticed that when I can see on a piece of paper all the tasks that I have to complete, I concentrate more and waste less time during the day. Also, taking a break and not overwhelming yourself is really important.

This video is on point. Being productive isn't all about will power. You need to start a project in order to continue it. Tracking your progress is almost important. Keep in mind what you have done, and it will give you motivation by knowing you have accomplished some already. Another thing: don't multitask! Take one step at a time. When you complete one thing, you will feel accomplished and more likely to be able to happily move on to the next.

Folks I can vouch for that first point like no other. The way I am, I will be doing something that isn't work and I'll be saying "I don't wanna work yet I'm comfortable spending my time doing this." The thing is though, that very effect will apply once you switch into work mode. I say to myself "alright, if I can get 15-20 minutes in of work and focus on it then I will stick with it" and it's true, after that time is up you'll typically just keep working. Bottom line: trust you'll get into it once you start, force yourself to work for 20 minutes knowing this. Try to make the workplace as comfortable as you can during this 20 minutes as well

So back in 2011 9I think, maybe 2010) there was a small game I started making where you take care of different aquatic animals. I eventually lost steam due to the huge daunting tasks of programming the animal health systems and other features in the game.
I later found out that an online friend of mine was disappointed when they found out that I seemingly stop working on it.
In order to finish it, i made a list. On the list, I laid out the days I would be working on the game, and the tasks I hoped to finish in each day. (Finish programming the Jellyfish system on Monday, finish setting up the food shop on Tuesday, etc) and as long as I finished the task allotted to that day, I could either stop, or continue working on the task for the next day and just take that day off. It worked MARVELS, and I finished the game on time. I try to apply that to other areas of life too, but it's not as easy. It seems silly to stop working once I've started going, but it really worked.

There may not be any strategies in particular to being productive, but there are many ways you can be productive, especially when you are bored. I know when you are bored, you are probably just sitting on the couch or on a social media website not doing anything worth while, which in fact could be changed into something like exercising, homework, etc.

Hi, very illuminating video. Here is my experience with the depletion of willpower and low productivity. At my work, I frequently have to work on plans and strategies, so in my private life, I often use the same concepts: planning churns and envisioning the steps that have to be done. But usually, this makes me tired even before I start with the work. I see so much that has to be done, that the pile of tasks in front of me seems insurmountable. I've learned that the easiest are new tasks or projects because for such tasks I have no idea how hard or complicated they really are. I just follow the principle one step at the time and this often brings me much further.

I like the little 1st 2nd and 3rd note stickers on the violin and the fact that when he shows the bow moving its going the completely wrong way

Time management is when you manage by making time for your health, social life, family or caring for yourself, and etc.
Since I’m struggling with my health, my social life is good. It is just I do not go out as often. There’s no reason for me to feel embarrassed, but I’m a college student at 19.
I never have a job before nor volunteered. My mom pays for my tuition, I’m extremely lazy, do not mess with me, the inside health of my mind is all over the place. And I have not been taking care of my health.
So I feel like I’m not good enough honestly. Since I get extremely stressed, I rather get tasks or work done without taking breaks. However, depending how long I have been productive depends if I should take a break. Instead it would be nice to look over my progress, and then complete them in another day. Because everyone needs to rest and relax.
Well..I rather get work or tasks done without breaks. But, since I’m currently struggling I have a neutral mind. Also, I’m Asian American I do not expect myself or see myself smart, have the perfect grades, and exceed my education like do well and graduate from college.
Boi I’m in community college, and it is great. But no one understands how I feel and it is just, “what the fu** is life?”

    here is my advise :
if u are hearing the same advise again and again it just hits you less. so if u see it being repeated just do it otherwise it will put you in a hard to change momentum or just avoid listening to such advise.
for example- making to do lists for tomorrow is one I hear too often but it is contrary to my nature which is to keep things less complex and i simply prioritize like in max 4 things- study, health, work etc. nothing more. these are my priorities and I like keeping it this way.
Making a to do lists generally makes it too long and dude if i am lazy it will be seen as a barrier not a ladder. grocery and other stuff is simply secondary, family is on my default hence a minimalistic and happy life with productivity where required.
Summary- Find the code that works for you instead of watching these vids that give 1 solution for a 1 million different type of people.

Great video and like the idea of 90 minutes work chunks very much. It's much less stressful to think that you have to work 5 chunks of hour and the half, then to work for 8 hours straight. I have one question though. What should one do during those 15 minutes breaks? I know that is easier to plan your work time this way when you work from home, but what if you're at your desk?
