Reminder: Dan has said he doesn't want people talking about character arcs, the future, even things that don't happen because it changes how he thinks about characters and situations... Talking about character arcs, even if you don't say what the arc is or how long it lasts, is a spoiler. Even little hints, when combined with other little hints, can become big spoilers.

Kudos to Daryl. While everyone else was freaking out he had the presence of mind to drop his gun and grab Carol. He definitely saved her life.

This is one of my favorite episodes in the entire series. It was so heartbreaking seeing Sofia walk out of the barn and Daryl having to hold Carol back. The expression on Rick's face when he put Sofia down was so powerful. The acting in this show is amazing.

Sophia's appearance was a shock that fans still remember to this day, and once again it was Rick who had to do the hard work while everyone else, including Shane, stood frozen.

Give me a break. Shane did the hard work. Putting her down was easy work and it was Rick because that makes a more palatable ending to the episode. No other reason.

That final scene gets me every time. Kudos for realizing that Otis was probably the one who put walker Sophia in the barn. So many reactors miss that bit of dialogue about Otis having been the one who handled the walkers and assume Hershel and his family knew she was there the whole time.
Also, even knowing Sophia was already dead, I still disagree with Shane. You can't give up that soon on a lost child. Plus, as you so aptly pointed out, if it had been Carl missing, he would have had a completely different reaction. He'd have been the one pushing to keep looking, no matter what.
My heart breaks for Carol. Thank goodness Daryl was there and reacted quickly enough to stop her from getting to Sophia. And Rick was feeling all kinds of guilt, but he didn't hesitate to step up and do what needed to be done when all of the others, including Shane, were frozen in shock. This episode remains in my list of best episodes of the series.

Absolutely heartwrenching, this episode still makes me cry just as hard as I did the first time watching it. I had so much hope for Sophia being alive just as much as Rick & Daryl. The writers were cruel for that one, speaking of cruel SHANE IS THE WORST. He's so unhinged and let me tell you he would be a terrible leader because he only cares about himself. People like to say he cares about Lori and Carl but I don't think that's true. I think he uses them to make him feel like he's the guy he's jealous of. He wants to be Rick so bad it's actually really scary & sad.

With the drama and Bear McReary's heartbreaking score, that final scene always moves me to tears - and I've seen it umpteen times! The acting is on point from all the ensemble cast and it just builds to the devastating climax. I think I saw you fighting back tears, too... but my eyes were a little watery so it was hard to tell for sure!

This was a tough one to unpack for sure. From Shane seemingly wanting to be the one in charge, and being unwilling to accept any one else’s thoughts. To the upsetting death of a beloved character. Though Sophia wasn’t shown in the show for too long, it was still so significant because how many people were hopeful she would be found. This episode really pulls on your heart strings for sure! Great reaction, always love watching and getting to unpack your reactions! Have a great day/night!! :)

Yay! Ty for this. Hope you are feeling better.
Yes, Shane is all about Lori and Carl. And doesn't care about anyone else. Some people may agree with that. But why would anyone be willing to help him, once they figure out, he doesn't have their back. Like when Andrea was "stuck in the department store". Shane told Amy, "she is gone. We don't risk the group". She said "she volunteered". Next day, Rick goes back to rescue Merle. And he told Shane, "what he would or wouldn't do doesn't interest me. I can't do that. I can't leave a man die that way". That's the difference between Rick and Shane. And I don't like Shane because of that.

  • @gravitypronepart2201
    @gravitypronepart2201 Рік тому +13

Dan, you made a great point that Ive never heard before, that if Carl were lost, Shane would never leave. Great point and it shows the clear difference between him and Rick. Rick genuinely cares about all the group, and Shane only pretends to. You talked about character archs, well 11 seasons is all about that. There are some mind blowing archs in this show man, and its gold. It biggest of them is, well your just going to have to see when we get there.

3:10 I agree. When the group that saved rick in episode 2 got lost shane said they wouldn't risk anyone by going to help them or after that to get merl and same now with sophia were he wants to call of the search but when carl got shot he didn't hesitate to go and get suplise with Otis knowing it would be risky to go with just one other person to protect you.
Also the moment they saw Sophia all of them acted like Hershel. 10 Second befor they were shooting at the walkers not even carring about saving amo (hitting them in the chest and all) but the moment they saw Sophia no one would shoot until Rick stepped forward.
If it was such a big deal for them that Hershel didn't want to shoot his familie and neighbours they could have just left and looked for another similar isolated farm and make that one their own. Instead they tried to make his theirs and disrespected Hershels rules after he saved 3 of their peoples lifes (Carol, T-Dog and Daryl) and Otis "sacrificed" himself for them.

I feel like for a lot of people this was the episode that made the apocalypse in the walking dead so much more real. They had so much hope that she’d be alive, and were holding onto the morals and values of the previous world in trying to find her. But then there she was, evidently dead the entire time- l because if we consider the timeline she likely was placed there the day she went missing. The previous episode was honestly kind of a calm-before-the-storm sort of feel. Sophia’s death + Shane’s inability to care about anyone other than himself is a dynamic that’s bound to throw things out of order. Great reaction! Can’t wait until the next one :)

I was 13 at the time and it was really awesome to see a tv series about zombies. Before, all we had were movies. Also in my opinion, Rick shooting Sophia solidified him as the leader of the group. If you have any thoughts of "really liking Shane" you clearly are not a great judge of character. It was subtle, but made very clear from the beginning that Shane only really cares about Shane. He will do the minimum to look good in the eyes of others, but will do anything that takes care of Shane (oh, and somebody else's family is something he believes helps take care of Shane). He was always a bad un. Getting really pissed off..... get used to it!

Thank goodness Shane did what he did otherwise they would have never found Sophia! They weren't just looking for her alive. They were also looking for her dead or her as a walker, but because Herschel was keeping this barn full of walkers they didn't even know to look there. Otis is dead because he shot Carl and then couldn't do the difficult thing and leave Shane behind to save Carl. If Otis had done what Shane asked him to do, when Shane told Otis to take the bags and leave him behind, he was still be alive.

Not only people in Rick's group but Hershel's family could get killed, so I don't think it's unforgivable and unnecessary, but yes, it's not Shane's call, he said either they kill them all or they should leave, after Rick and Carl told him the reasons why couldn't they leave, he did what he thought had to be done.

2:26 so maybe just don't like him?? like? i'm not trying to be rude but its so frustrating, seeing people spend so much time empathizing with Shane while neglecting other character's. even the practical, correct decisions he makes are done in the worst possible ways. he is the most prone to violence, murder, lying, and attempted rape in the group. he is LOSING HIS MIND. most of the other characters haven't even considered that shit. its been a couple months max in the apocalypse and he's ALREADY jumping to murder. we see in season 1 ep 1 the way he talks about women even before the apocolapse. aka "every other pair of boobs"
the decision was right but he went about it in the worst way possible. he screams at everyone and forces them the barn open. he doesn't wait for Carl to get to safety, or Lori - the two people he justifies all his descisions on. he doesn't let anyone who can't fight have a chance to get away. then he wasn't even able to put Sophia down, which makes him look even more in the wrong for forcing Hershel's family to watch their family/friends die but not even being willing to treat Sophia the same. he looks hypocritical at best.

To me I don’t understand the dislike for Shane like I do get it but I feel like sometimes people don’t think about their hypothetical situations properly and I’ll and I will explain what I mean, the common argument is “Shane will get them kicked out!” Ok… how? if hershell is such a pacafist that won’t use guns and the group doesn’t want to leave how is hershell going to make them leave? By acting like Shane? The thing that is being argued is bad? Don’t get me wrong Shane ilhas done a lot of dick moves, which make him look insane whe he actually is speaking the truth people don’t want to hear! It’s the apocalypse there is no more “owning land” that just isn’t a thing if they don’t want to leave (why would they) and hershell can’t make them then they won’t, get what I’m saying?

With all due respect my bro with that mentality I don’t think you’d do that well in the apocalypse. Not everything’s about morals in the apocalypse. What Shane did actually woke up Hershel’s delusion about walkers being people which was better for him in the long run. Imagine living next to a barn full of flesh eating individuals who could eat you alive at night with something as simple as a strong wind breaking the barn open one night after walkers overfill. You won’t be mad at Shane’s method than lmao. Yeah Shane does things but most of what he did is better for survival. Everyone was so deluded in season 1 and 2 about survival

I went back today & watched a few of your early Walking Dead videos - I would love to know what you think about Shanes behaviour on reflection here knowing just how awful this world is by season 3. Love your take on this masterpiece of a show.
