  • Don DeLillo is a prophet of American culture, politics, and the modern citizen’s role in societal advancements. Every decade DeLillo writes a novel tackling the current advances in science, politics, or technology on American society. And with his recent novel, “The Silence,” DeLillo explores the humans propensity to vanish into the internet and what would happen if we suddenly lost it!

So awesome there are still people who read books and understand the power of author direct to reader connection.

Very good in depth companion to the book and Delillo. Your love for books really shines through when you talk. Loved your comments on ‘White Noise’ and the link with DFW on seeking distraction so you don’t have to feel that existential dread. That is something ‘The Silence’ had in spades; what if the distractions stop working? Then it’s just bare bones angst. Although the characters kept on acting like the distractions were still there. Mimicking the distractions. Anything to not have to face yourself in the silence.
“How strange it is. We have these deep terrible lingering fears about ourselves and the people we love. Yet we walk around, talk to people, eat and drink. We manage to function. The feelings are deep and real. Shouldn't they paralyze us? How is it we can survive them, at least for a little while? We drive a car, we teach a class. How is it no one sees how deeply afraid we were, last night, this morning? Is it something we all hide from each other, by mutual consent? Or do we share the same secret without knowing it? Wear the same disguise?”

Something to pray for, for this event to happen.
Makes me think of Tower of Babel event in Genesis.
In my copy the font is old school typewriter. Author saying something by way of font choice.
Ken Kesey imagined a similar scenario in his excellent novel Sailor Song (I think was the title)
