  • Dettifoss, located in Northeast Iceland, is either Europe's most powerful or second most powerful waterfall, but one thing is for sure, this waterfall IS powerful. Dettifoss is situated on the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, which flows from the Vatnajökull glacier. The falls are 330 feet (100 meters) wide and have a drop of 144 feet (44 meters) down to the canyon Jökulsárgljúfur. We're also going to see Selfoss waterfalls (2:58), which are about a kilometer (0.6 miles) away from Dettifoss.

Dettifoss was a magic... for me. I was already in love with the northern wilderness but that was just a confirmation that I must have some genes from the north.
We were hitchhiking around Island, it was later in the evening and a young couple told us they were going to Dettifoss whether we want to go with them or find a place to stay for the night. We went with them and...
We got out of the car, It was eery dusk, equally eerily dark grey stones all around, fog, the roar of huge masses of greyish water thundering down...
Is it difficult to move to Island?

Looks like you were on the West side for each of these waterfalls, correct? Is there a reason you chose this side? I am currently researching these waterfalls for a trip this summer.

Not sure which side we were on. We were dropped off by our bus and walked to Dettifoss. We were definitely in the best spot to see the falls. We then took the path to Selfoss and that's where we ended up. I would have kept going but we had to get back to the bus.

This is the west side. Both sides are magical but the west is my favourite. The road on the east side is horrible.

It is a shame Niagara Falls is so built up. I would much rather the surrounding area be left more natural as Dettifoss and Selfoss.

This waterfall is surrounded by mostly volcanic wasteland that is useless to people. There is a 20 mile road to the falls, whose only purpose is to transport people to the waterfall. Different conditions, for sure! :)
