That's a lot of money for a metro, is it really worth it?
Who knew the building of essential infrastructure would cost a lot of money? 🙄
Yes. The connectivity of Sydney is decades late. The boffins in charge of infrastructure, transport and planning focused too much on everything happening in the central business district.
Meanwhile, Sydneysiders had no other option than focusing on car travel and roads.
This is catch-up time. Fortunately, being late has allowed Sydney to use new technology that was not available back when this infrastructure should have been built.
It will only be more expensive to do it in the future when wages and the cost of borrowing funds is higher.
The Sydney Metro has already made a difference in The Hills District of Sydney in reducing car use. The expansion of the Sydney Metro will make a major difference.
Worth every cent and once the next stage opens it will save even more travel time compared to today's transport options.

First mistake: the first part of the Metro goes from Tallawong to Chatswood (Not Rouse Hill), the 2nd part from Chatswood to Sydenham this year, the extension to Bankstown comes in year or two.

I think one big mistake with the Parramatta Metro is going through North Stratfield, which is a very quiet station, instead of taking in central Strathfield which is a very busy hub and junction. Big Mistake!

The huge expense is an investment in problem solving. The section already in operation works as promised and is well patronised. This is mostly new additional infrastructure that will reduce peak hour travel congestion. Road and rail.like your video but the AI voice needs work.

64 billion??!! I would expect modern high speed rail between Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane for 64 billion, not a local metro project. Wow, that is a big cost, I know Auatralia is a high wage economy but this is a lot of money.
The video missed a few details - the funding for this project is spread over more than 15 years, and is in AUD. HSR would be great, but there’s not enough development between Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane to justify the cost - which would be far higher than $64B AUD. Ultimately this was a nice video but they really glossed over a lot of the details and complexities faced by these projects, including delays because of COVID-19 and a change of government. The rail lines mentioned are 4 separate projects and are not all funded the same. For example, the western airport line is partially federally funded so the NSW tax payer isn’t footing the entire bill.

The budget is a lot but the benefits will be enormous and transform the entire region and economy. The project will likely pay for itself within half a decade
@yeltseirp021 That's still massively expensive for the resulting infrastructure, number of stations, of building sites, and for the expected ridership.
Just for reference, it's similar in cost to the Grand Paris Express project that has 200km of new metro lines, of which 180km are deep bored in difficult terrain and / or under very densely populated locations, and having to deal with the overly stringent French tunnel laws that require an access / escape shaft every 800 meters or less.
Plus 84 new stations, 68 on the new lines and 16 on the 3 extensions to 2 existing lines.
I'll let you do the math for the number of digging sites it requires...
Add to that a minimum of 220 Alstom Metropolis trains, also fully automated, with their storage and maintenance centers (some partly built underground)...
All this with an expected ridership of over 3 million daily.
There's quite a dichotomy between what you get in both cities for virtually the same overall cost.
Ditto for the cost per rider.
I know that Sydney is very car dependent (by European standards) but still.
It's once again a case of outrageously excessive infrastructure development costs as is so common in developed English speaking countries.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a strong transit suppoter and advocate but this cost issue must be addressed.
For the same cost, Sydney Metro could have been much better, more useful with more stations and offering finer service to more people.

Even without the boundary change, Melbourne was due to eventually overtake Sydney anyway. The gap had been closing since the early 00s before the Covid lockdowns messed everything up. But now the trends have returned back to normal more-or-less.

It seems like a lot of money, but the video missed a lot of details and used very general info. Sydney Metro is made up of 4 different projects with the costs spread over more than 15 years. There are several other massive projects happening in NSW, we aren’t getting just trains luckily! There has been a significant investment in infrastructure due to underinvestment from the 1980s-2000s.
@@yeltseirp021Agreed. The Sydney Metro combines the Elizabeth Line in London and the Long Island Rail Road Expansion Project in Manhattan but uses the most modern train technology. Two brand new lines are being through Sydney’s CBD. In scale, probably the Paris RER expansion project is the only rail project that currently bets the Sydney Metro expansion project.

Please look at the facts, the largest transport project in Australia and the world is the 125 billion dollar Suburban Rail Loop in Melbourne, also Melbourne is the most populous city in Australia taking the title recently.
Melbourne has overtaken Sydney as the most populous metropolitan area only and only by a few thousand. When Chairman Dan added Melton to the map he forgot to do a few things that Sydney did to its surrounding areas 50 years ago and one of those was to provide electric rail travel to those areas from the metropolitan area.
Sydney's suburban and intercity rail networks serve something like 6 million people and extend from Newcastle in the north to Kiama in the south and Lithgow to the west. Every single train is double deck electric multiple units with most of them being eight cars in length and the new D-sets will be ten cars long.
Equivalent areas around Melbourne are served by 3 and 6 car, single deck diesel multiple units, providing a slower, less comfy and far less frequent trip. It is third-world by comparison.
The SRL will never be completed so it is not the largest project. Sydney Metro is budgeted for, costed and more importantly, every part of it is either complete or well under construction. The driverless trains are futuristic and mean no more bullying from the RTBU.
I should add that Sydney is one of few cities in the world that had both heavy rail and metro rail, with lots of connectivity between the two systems. Most other cities have either heavy rail or metro rail but not both. Melbourne will never achieve that and is still battling to even build a rail link to its airport.
@@vintageradio3404 the reason ridership is higher is because the road system around Sydney is like spaghetti, whereas Melbourne has a grid system throughout the entire metro region that allows easy access to all suburbs plus a great freeway system. As for double deck, we tried it and it failed miserably, thank goodness common sense prevailed. On the point of regional rail, we have a well serviced network. Only state where patronage has gone through the roof, most lines feature 130 kmh services with some seeing 160kmh, tell me where in NSW does that occur. Suburban Rail Loop might not fully eventuate, but the scale of it and the city shaping project that it is surpasses anything in the mish mash of bizarre, I'll planned projects that besets Sydney.

The amount of folks that whinge and complain about frequencies, service disruptions and the Metro programme doesn't seem to reflect it's supposed greatness. Even the vloggers paint a glowing picture of even the infrastructure, like Central. What a endless rabbit warren of tunnels you have to traverse to get around that place, been there done that. A below par transport system. Reckon the only standout is the ferry service. Quite happy with what is provided in the form of public transport down here. Seems any alternate comment gets met with, Sydney jealousy. Seems Sydneysiders don't like the truth.
