Beating the final boss was the most ridiculous thing a jrpg has asked of me, but let me tell you... the euphoria rush you get when you take that second form down. HOOO BOY!

Theres no way this is a japanese game.
I won't denying the true final boss was my biggest disappointment, the Final Boss himself is cool, his design is phenomenal and I love that for once the Final Boss is actually the hardest thing in the game, always found in JRPG where the Final Boss is an actual god and yet is far easier than other random hidden bosses out there that being said, there is definitly massive issues with it :
-It's a massive difficulty spike, way to big and as the result you either has to grind or perfectly know how the gam mechanic works to stand a chance, you can actually beat him at LV50-60 (that's the LV I beat him), but no other bosses ask you as much as precision and strength to beat, so yeah I can definitly see the average player just give up and I won't blame them especially because....
-That freaking boss rush, this boss are honnestly jokes and you can do all 8 in around 15 minutes, but the problem still stand that if you lose to the final boss you have to redo all of them, I just don't like that, I don't like it in Mega Man games and I certainly don't like it here.
-And despite all the build up he has and lore significance, this is still massively disappointing, your characters don't react, all the event have been cause by a random NPC that you never heard of and you saw just 5 minutes, all of this to save a random NPC that you saw for 5 minutes, and it just end with a cutscene, give 100000 money and accessory you don't need anymore and.... that's it talk about anti climatic.

something that helps with lighting (at least for me) is turning off the corner shadows and turning the brightness to the lowest setting possible

And now almost 3 years later, Square Enix is making Triangle Strategy and Dragon Quest 3 in Octopath’s style. Outside of SE, people start making indie RPGs in this style too, like Eiyuden Chronicles and Sacrifire.
Octopath may not be a perfect game but we can’t deny its influence. The combination of its visual and music is awe inspiring. There will be more games like this in the near future.

I found that the secondary jobs and secret jobs were enough to keep the endgame fresh. everytime i got a new job so many possibilities opened up, and also equipment and money came in huge quantities with the sidequests, so there was never a need to grind.
Holy shit man I had the same experience as what you said in he beginning of the video. I played a lot of video games that are considered to be master pieces too, but for some reason could not get into a lot of them, especially JRPG games. I had the same mindset of that if they're universally liked by many, it'll likely mean I'll get into them too, but that wasn't the case. Final Fantasy 9 was the first JRPG game I got really into too like you (not counting Pokémon). FF9 was the game that I dropped but picked it back up and was determined to finish it
Ayyy, good to see I wasn’t the only one with that experience. Glad that at least you ended up enjoying FF9! Between all the times I tried to play it, from numerous files throughout the years, I’ve probably spent about 70 hours playing FF9... and yet I’ve never seen Disc 3 LOL
The thing that excites me most about this game is that it could get a sequel that improves upon the foundation they built here. The developers clearly have a love for classic JRPGs and if they listened to some of the constructive criticisms that other fans of classic JRPGs had about this game it could potentially turn into something truly magical. I played Project Triangle Strategy and I’m super excited for the full release but it still doesn’t scratch the same itch as something like this could if done correctly.
Regardless of what this studio does in the future, I would love it if this engine/art style was used for other genres of games. They’re really onto something with the look of this game. I’m totally over the whole pixel art trend but this aesthetic feels like it breathes new life into it and I’d love it to become it’s own trend. There’s a game called Cross Code that would be perfect for this as it’s design is basically already a lo-res style of this game’s anyway.

Rpgs are such a time investment that i dont know if i can take such a middling review as worth getting, if this was for a game you could beat in 9 hrs id try it in a second but at the length this game clocks in at im not sure its worth it
If you feel that unsure about it, I’d recommend not bothering with it and instead playing a bunch of shorter games, indie or otherwise, honestly.

I mean there's a huuuuuuuge difference between something like this and what Dunkey does. Dunkey's moreso an entertainer than a critic. But he's seen as a critic because he's able to take broad concepts and make fun of it to the point where you kind of see where he's coming from. This is why you don't usually see his videos go past 10 minutes.

sadly bravely defeault and second need more talk since not a lot it is hearing about those games. and also some ones that are of my favorites. Golden Sun. like with advance wars it is like ignored and i could not figure it out why. even with the weird new games.
I would really like to give Advance Wars a shot sometime, eventually. Hopefully I’d be able to get a video out of that series too. No promises, but I’d like for that!

I beat octopath a few years ago and I literally had no clue there was something after chapter 4... I just stopped playing after my last chapter 4 because I thought that was the end. From the looks of it though good thing I stopped because that final boss looks insane.

Yeah, The Gates of Finis and the quests leading up to it were probably one of the worst choices in game design I've encountered in some years. The only reason I know about the quest is because I had to look up how to finish Kit's II (and subsequently III's starting location) and decided to just railroad to the end... then I saw what the end actually *was* and checked out.
But yeah, I 100%'d the game with exception to The Gates of Finis. It was more rewarding to Google/UA-cam the important bits and have everything "click" that way than grinding away at the boss rush.
Seeing you go and throwing the disks hurts me. Those things have value dangit! No more are going to be printed, why would you intentionally lower the amount in circulation?

I did beat the final boss. It was straight bullshit wall from getting the actual, cohesive end to the game. It is a super boss, the kind I would expect from a JRPG in an optional, difficult dungeon with a large difficulty spike. Imo that kind of boss should never be a barrier to the end.
Another thing that greatly annoyed me was that the characters had 0 dialogue in the ending, probably because it was a side story. That's dumb af. It is a sequence that requires all the characters leveled up to high levels. There should definitely be some dialogue for the main party that killed a dark god. And of course, the boss rush is extremely boring and ridiculously long.
ANALYTICAL thought is great, not a lot of people actually do it.

Are you talking about Earthbound (SNES) or Bravely Default (3DS)?

By the way, I highly recommend Mother 3, which is technically a sort of sequel to Earthbound; since Earthbound is known as Mother 2 in Japan. You should try Earthbound first. Personally, I’m not super into Earthbound. But Mother 3? Mother 3 is one of the best games ever made.

Dragoon does have timed attacks, and I’m a fan of that style of combat (akin to other RPGs I like, such as Mario & Luigi, Paper Mario, or the game that came up with that sort of combat, Mario RPG), so I’m sure I’d be willing to give it a shot some time.

Why are all the bosses super big when you fight them but normal when you talk to them? I would think that would extend to the big snake. #justiceforbigsnake

Love the artstyle and gameplay. Worldbuilding and characters are cute and charming most of the times. The main chapters themselves are the problem. Contrivances, poor storytelling and not enough development/the showing of development. And not everyone got an equally compelling arc. I chose Therion as my starting character and his main campaign is the shittiest of them all. Like wtf my man is a fool with a glass pride. They have magic and tangible gods in this world and he couldnt think of any other way to remove the dumb bangle? and then he developed some stockholm syndrome type shit. Fuck that man. Cyrus is interesting but he literally stumbles on the right people at the right time and Therese is so toxic how dare they try put a spin on that. Like "oh she's a good guy now haha fuck you". Primrose is the most well developed but simeon felt like a last minute change shock villain. Everybody else was ranging from adequate to meh af . 8/110 great game I enjoyed it throughly
