How to whip the end of a rope with West Country Whipping.
West Country whipping was the name given by Biddlecombe in 1848 to this particular practice, but most subsequent seamanship books, including the British Admiralty Manual of Seamanship , have modified the name to West County Whipping. The thread or yarn having been middled, the ends are passed around the rope and are half knotted together. Each end is next led one half a turn to the opposite side and again the two are half knotted. The ends are again led one half a turn around the rope and half knotted. T his is continued on alternate sides until the required width is reached, when the ends are securely reef knotted and cut off. I have not seen this whipping used but it has this advantage: if any part breaks it will be a very long while before the whole whipping lets go. The break will be evident and the whipping can be replaced in time.

Thanks Johnny! I like this one a lot. Just over hand knots tied on opposite sides of your object. Looks nice though, woven.
I think I will have to look at this one again, have not done anything with it, other than this video.
Well Johnny Debt thank you for sharing, the "West Country Whipping" should spruce up walking stick at Sharing Meadows, I volunteer and teach woodworking.
Love it when knots are being used, also good to hear that you are teaching. You may be interested in this playlist as it is mostly covering knots: ua-cam.com/play/PL7nysDkNnZHf8IAYWCPhfWLFA-RW7e2tH.html
How much paracord is needed for 6inches of whipping
Thank you. I use West Country Whipping to cover Bic lighters with a linen kitchen twine, then seal the whipping with hair spray. The finished product doesn't require much time and looks pretty good.
You are so right Dan, it really does make a Bic lighter look smarter. Just wondering, do you know if Bic lighters are refillable?
That would look good but very flammable so....no
@@Broody4Boglim - True. Tho no more flammable than a molded plastic extrusion pressurized with butane.
This is cool definitely want to try one day
Good there are loads of videos out there that need improving, even mine!!!
Johnny Debt lol your vids are very good
What did you use in one of your videos to seal it after you’ve finished it? Was it 50/50 Water and Some type of Glue?
Yes, this video gives all the info on what I use: ua-cam.com/video/G9iI7Rm33io/v-deo.html Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
Just checked BR67 (Admiralty Manual of Seamanship) and it is referred to as West Country Whipping.
(22 years as a Sea Cadet, 9 with the RFA - I've picked up a few odds & sods lol)
Hate doing it with whipping twine!
I love a good BR, Marine Engineering Manual was a good one ;-)
@@KnottingKnots I'm a deckie - BR45 is my bread & butter
@@seanwoodcraft Where and what are you currently serving on?
When doing this bit of whipping, I usually draw a light line with a pencil on both sides 180° out from each other.
Great tip!
Hi Johnny can the WCW wrap be made dual colour by joining two colours of Paracord??
I love your videos! By the way, what knife is that?
The knife is the Myerchin, you can find it on my blog posts here: igkt-solent.co.uk/supplies/
Johnny- According to Google, one can "refill a Bic lighter", but it looks like the operation may be messy and somewhat dangerous.
A favorite use for old disposable lighters is recreational: pitch them into a roaring fire -- from a distance of 5 or 6 meters.
Assuming you're outside of the blast radius, it can be spectacular.
Ah, that reminds me of when I was in the RN. During one tricky situation we had to ensure that all confidential waste was burnt. There was an office who was very much hated in charge of the operation. The lads would hide cans of deodorant in the waste bags. He was not impressed when they exploded!!!
Left over right and under
I will make a new paracord vid soon I promise like mabey tomorrow soon
Now I have to ask myself why I failed scouts..
Maybe at the time you weren't as interesting the subjects? Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
A yyyy first lol again
Are your sure, as I see one a little older than yours by Dan??
