    So today I will tell you about the most rare metal on Earth - iridium.
    Iridium is a transitional metal, which is located in the middle of the periodic table, below rhodium. If we take a look at the prevalence of all elements in the earth's crust, Iridium holds the last place, that is a billion atoms of all that there is and only one atom of iridium. This metal is 40 times rarer than gold.
    In much higher concentrations iridium is found in meteorites and also in the depths of the Earth, in magma. Interestingly enough, in the layers of rock sediments, though more precisely in the formation of clay, that is aged about 66 million years there were found high concentrations of iridium and this can indicate the collision of Earth with a huge meteorite in the past, which in theory was the cause of the death of the dinosaurs. In it’s appearance iridium is a shiny metal that does not oxidize in air.
    This metal has almost the highest density of all metals, just 0.12% lower than that of osmium - the most dense metal.
    In this tiny tiny metal droplet, which is of the size of a match head, we have 1 gram of iridium. To help you understand how high is the density of iridium, I will show other metals with the same mass for comparison.
    Lead, copper, gallium, zinc, magnesium, and the lightest metal - lithium.
    The volumes of the first and last metal differ by about 30 times, although their mass is the same. Iridium is also a very hard metal that is firmer than the solid steel in 1.5 (one and a half) times. Iridium, in addition to its rarity is even the most stable metal that does not oxidize in air up to 2000 degrees, and is not soluble in either acid or aqua regia. Iridium can only react with the fluorine at temperatures of about 600 degrees.
    Unfortunately, due to the low activity of iridium, I cannot conduct any chemical experiments or have quality reactions with it.
    The only thing that I can do is make a fine powder of iridium and set it on fire in the air, but as you can see, in this case iridium dust is burning quite slowly and also requires dispersing it in the air. For the first time on youtube, you can observe a burning iridium. Also, due to the low activity of iridium, the metal does not tarnish in air, even when heated to above 1,000 degrees. The only thing that the drop of iridium got covered with is a partially evaporated ceramic layer, the one that the forceps are made from. Iridium compounds are can be either brown or yellow, such as the complex of Vasca, which is used as a catalyst in organic chemistry.
    By the way, Iridium is the only element that can give away 9 electrons and form compounds with +9 (plus nine) oxidation state.
    Iridium now finds many uses in science and technology.
    In most cases, we will probably find iridium in spark plugs for vehicles, due to the high stability of iridium to oxidation under the influence of electric discharge.
    Pure iridium is used for making crucibles for growing single crystals, foil for making non-amalgam cathodes, as well as as a part of the highly resistant to corrosion alloys.
    The first standard of mass of one kilogram was created in 1889 using an alloy composition of 90% platinum and 10% iridium and is called the International Prototype Kilogram, it is still kept in the Paris Chamber of Weights and Measures.
    Now you know more about one more of the elements, if you would like the scientific series of the elements to continue, please subscribe to my channel and also throw in some likes if you can! Thank you for watching.

Took it to a cash for gold place as I could see a hard to see 1 but distinctive 4 and a K after, under the thick coat of what they told me was Iridium. They hit it with a gun and said it's Reading Iridium and copper which also looks like gold in a tiny worn spot. Could the Iridium mess with the reading being radioactive or maybe to thick to penetrate? I'd like to sell this thing to have extra holiday money. I got in a pile of different mostly fake but found alot of gold and gems in this bag for 50 cents.

    My main interest in iridium is that it was for many decades used as the tipping material on the point of most quality fountain pen nibs. The nibs were either made of 14 to 18 kt. gold or steel, and the point would be dipped in a VERRRY tiny drop of molten iridium to create a round ball at the point. The ball was then split like the rest of the nib so that ink would flow through it, and polished to glide smoothly over paper. Being an extremely hard metal, it was more durable than a point made of gold or most types of steel. Pilot of Japan was the last pen company to use real iridium as tipping material. They actually bought the world's last iridium mine to make sure they would have a supplier.

    if it's rarer than gold does that mean it has more cash value?

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 7 років тому +29

      Rarity and value aren't always linked. If it's rare but of no use either in industry, science or in an artifact such as jewelry, who would pay for it? The video stated it's worth $80/gram. There are 28.35 grams/ounce. So Iridium is worth $2268 an ounce. It looks like the current value of gold is $1166 per ounce.

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 7 років тому +14

      I had just finished editing my comment to you to include the qualifier that rarity and value aren't always linked. In the case of a dinosaur bone, it has a scientific value and for some collectors or museums with an archeological bent, value as a show piece.
      I dug up a rock in my backyard. It is unique in that it is the only one from my yard, so it is extremely rare. Anyone want to buy it?

    • @matthewlivingston3168
      @matthewlivingston3168 7 років тому +1

      Gregory Parrott haha I read the value per ounce & deleted my comment. It's worth more than gold. Your unique rock analogy is very vague. It's not iridium or gold. But you know where I'm getting at without being circuitous & sarcastic. Iridium has more value than gold. 😎👍

    • @gregparrott
      @gregparrott 7 років тому

      The rock analogy is admittedly vague. I was trying to think of something very rare but had no correlating value. My first thought was 'dinosaur dung', but then realized that might be very valuable to archeologists, biologists, etc. As they say, 'value is in the eye of the beholder.'

    • @matthewlivingston3168

    We would use iridium to xray welds for inspection. Was so cool to know this existed. Also would use colbolt but not very often. Like who knew radiation would bombard the film around the weld and once you develop the film it gives you a picture of the Weld and will show you any discontinuity in weld. Still find this stuff so fascinating.

    There are so many other science channels on UA-cam but I like yours the most. Largely because of the way you make an effort to speak in a language that isn't your first language. When I was little I used to think the British accent was funny. Then I got used to it. Learned about the American accent and got used to it too. You speak so correctly (grammatically) it's like a new way of speaking English. I'm loving it. 😄😄

    Funny how rarity isn't actually what makes jewelry cost so much. It's an unethical person CLAIMING that it's extremely rare and setting their own prices. If rarity was it, iridium's cost would be out the rufe!
