I wrote on Iona’s Instagram how she should have immense confidence in herself not only as a golfer but as a presenter. She is always just herself and her passion for the game is so evident but also is her desire to give something back. Here we have yet another example of a friendly look at how she approaches practice. A ‘this is what I do’ video rather than a ‘this is what you should do’, presented in a way that you want to try it out. Thanks again Iona. For me, you are the voice of golf. Just keep being you.
Excellent as always, Iona. You have all the skills & a timely reminder to use my Tues practice session in advance of Wed comp day in Lisheen Springs, Co. Dublin. U may know are Club Pro Raymie Burns ??
Went to the range to hit a bucket after work. Brought only my 7 iron. I tried to focus on staying connected and split the bucket into sets of 3 balls to slow down the hitting tempo. I enjoyed the best strikes of the season. The swing can easily get away from you and it's not always easy to get back. Thank you Iona for the great reminder.
I want to compliment you on how relaxed, chill and easy going you present the things you do. You are pure, all natural. Keep this up! I enjoy this very very much
As a new viewer to this channel and having watched numerous others, I can say that I’m now a convert. Really helpful tips and drills and somehow a more simplified way of practicing. Thanks Iona
Iona - I apologize for not being familiar with you. I caught you playing with Rick Shiels and became an instant Iona fan. Your swing, your personality, your smile all won me over. I simply cannot imagine someone watching you and not becoming a convert. I immediately subscribed. I don't know if you will make my golf better, although I suspect you will. But you will definitely make my watching much more fun.
Such a great video! There are some really good ideas there that I’ll take to my next range session. I will try to remember “Quality over quantity” for all of my range sessions from now on! Thank you again, Iona!
Thank you so much for this video! I watched it before heading to the range this evening, and I was so much more relaxed and felt like I really learned some things. Love your approach to mindset and I'm really digging the chasing the red series.
Iona, I want to thank you for your honesty and guidance regards practice. I play off of 10, used to be 4 but I gave up the game decades ago to do other things. I practiced every day to reach 4. No I basically do a muscle warm up and putting. Your video has given me a push to now use my local ranges and..... not hit a 100 balls (lol)... But have a goal, and work on it. Thanks for sharing your tips. 😊😊
Content like this is great. Think we’ve all been guilty of going to the range and just smashing balls without really focussing on anything! I like the sets of three, going to use that one myself.
Superb video. I for one, struggle when on the range. I go through the bag but with no real purpose and practice. I will definitely use this approach by splitting up balls into small groups. 👏
So helpful to get your guidance on proper practice Iona, I’m so guilty of whacking 110 balls in a session with little idea of whether I’m improving or just tiring myself out. Quality is the key! X
Outstanding video. I have been guilty of 100 balls in 45 mins. I have seen the towel drill but never knew how and why. It was good to see it being used. Something I am going to try. A lot of people will gain a lot by watching this.
Another tip is taking that target alignment rod and placing it a couple of feet in front of you sticking down on the ground. You know have a target line and you can practice on shot shaping left and/or right. If you hit the target line rod, your club’s face was perfectly squared to your target line. Hope this tip helps
Great advice Iona - so many just pitch up to beat balls with no real purpose and wind up exhausted and sore. Really enjoying your series of videos - more please! A video explaining the benefits of swinging within yourself and making a solid strike vs trying to hit it hard would be great.
I saw your Instagram post with the towel a couple of weeks ago and it's really helped me stop pulling my shots left. Can"t recommend it enough as a drill. Great video about quality over quantity. And again a healthy mental approach is preached.
Great video as Always Iona 😁😁 Pity you weren't ripping your Driver, I'm sure I'm not the only one whose keen to see that 😁Please share your chipping practice as well. I think a lot of us could benefit from your experience around the green😊👍
Your technique looks Awesome, I wish I could play like you do on a bad day keep up the good work and rest that wrist of your, keep up the great work loving the content
Really enjoyed this! I try to decide before I leave home what it is that I want to do at a range session on that given day: Some days, if I've had a rotten day at work, I do just want to get 100 balls, move through the gears quickly, and blat a load of drives (the golfing equivalent of letting off steam at a punchbag at the gym). Some days, I want to go and work on a specific aspect of my game. I'll typically get 50 balls, spend 30 of them on my objective for the day, but still "treat" myself to 20 balls of "fun", which might be ten of wedge target practice and ten drives. And then if it's a warm-up prior to a round, I'll simply get 30 balls and work down the bag, using alternate clubs for four balls each: PW, 8i, 6i, 4h, D. Then off to the chipping green, putting green and the first tee! So yeah, for me it's all about setting off to the range with intent and purpose. Tell yourself what you're going to do, do what you're going to do, then reflect on what you did.
Such great insight. Practice with intent rather than the need to hit as many shots as possible. I see people find a stall at the range with 2 full large buckets in hand often. I assure you that they are doing more harm than good late in that session. Thx Iona. Well done.
Great advice on using the time at the range to advantage, Iona. Like you, I use alignment sticks for ball position and target line then take them away once I get a groove going. If I go awry, out come the alignment sticks and it's back to work. It is way too easy to slip into "whack a mole" mode with the range balls. I find it helpful to switch up my target as I move between clubs. I'm always focusing on a swing target at the back of the range so that I swing the club rather than hit the ball at a marker, or flag, etc.
Great vid Iona. Am going to try the towel thing…it may help in my over the top bad hits too. Keep it going please, loving these and the In the Red vids. Top stuff.
Thanks! Good tips for the range. I use a similar approach but have not ever incorporated training aids like the sticks to check ball position. And setting up my phone so I can video myself is brilliant. (And in hindsight so obvious!). So I am going to take both of these with me the next time I go to the range. I also like the idea of 3-ball sets. One more thing I need to do is to pick 1 or 2 things to work on rather than coming to the range with either no plan and trying different things on the fly or I come with a half dozen or more issues to address or techniques to try and I overwhelm myself and don't really learn. Focusing on just a couple of things like you did is great advice.
Great little video Iona, the towel under the armpits is such an under rated tool, the benefits are priceless, it keeps you connected, it limits your swing to a half /three quarter swing which helps with feeling a compact swing and focuses your mind on the important sections of the take away and through impact, it's inspired me to put it back into my routine, so thank you for that. A side point with the 30 ball practice session, if you're taking a couple of practice swings before each ball to get the feeling (which I think is so important) you're actually looking at 90 swings, which is more than a full round of golf, so 30 is perfect. Thanks again Iona.
Such good tips in this video. I definitely fall into the trap of smashing 100 balls and end up worse than when I started. Definitely gonna try some of this!
TLDR - sports psychology principles encourage doing some authentic practice. I know most people recommend starting with the wedge etc on the range but if I may offer a different opinion for the weekend warriors (non-pro golfer). Warm-up is super important and one should develop a warm-up routine (I use resistance bands) to activate the muscle groups etc. On the range, I do abt a 8 minute warm-up and then... I go to hit Driver (or 3 wood) first, or whatever you are going to tee off with on the weekend. Then I work my way down the irons and into pitching. Why? Because this portion is authentic practice. Most of us weekenders are not able to do a range warm-up before our tee-times, for all sorts of real world reasons (like no range at the course!). So we need to adapt to a "good warm-up and into a driver swing" routine, followed by the shot sequence on the course (irons then pitching). It builds great confidence because thats how it happens on the weekends. The pros and competitive players do the reverse because they come 2 hours before their tee-time and do a full range warm-up. I will do this "warmup to driver" routine from time to time on the range in order to get into the correct weekend mindset!
Excellent video Iona! I really can’t remember going to the driving range with any sort of plan of working on technique. I have just gone with an intent to just strike the ball as good as I can, but with no plan to establish any technique necessarily. Your advice on working on very specific elements of a good swing really makes sense. Thanks for rattling my cage! 🙂
Excellent advice Iona & this is definitely something I can learn & improve from. The idea of just banging balls is long gone but having a structured practice isn't always easy & the towel drill will certainly help my swing. many thanks.
Great video. Thank you for offering your insights for practice. My journey at the driving range will be improved and, hopefully, my game using your methods.
Outstanding advice. I'm in my 50's and any driving range practice or even playing a round I feel back stiffness, soreness afterwards and next day. It's hard for me to stay under 30 balls, but I liked how you just kept it to 2 clubs and one thing.
Fascinating to see your thought process Iona. I will defo use this going forward at the range rather than just seeing if I can get the 100 balls thru the back fence 🏌♂️💥⛳️
Found the drill you shared very useful for my irons. Tried with less success for driver. Maybe you could show a drill you use for driver in the future. Keep up the good content.
Fantastic advice. The two things i am taking away: 1) I need some alignment sticks, 2) I should try the towel trick to promote a more neutral swing plane and learn my natural tempo.
Another great video Iona. Love the tips and the drills you demonstrated I will have to give it a go next time I’m at the driving range. I’m guilty of just going through the whole bag hitting every club from wedge up to driver just aiming at different targets but not really putting much thought into technique. Loving the content and can’t wait for the next one
Thanks for the video. I like the concept of purposeful practice and picking an item to work on. then checking to see if progress is made. Your chipping practice would be great to see. I struggle with chipping currently. Cheers!
Thank you Iona. Your advice is always appreciated and delivered in an easily understandable way. Far too many coaches make it so difficult to understand. By the way you need a new glove lol.
Good advice, I hit about 40 balls on the club practice area 14:21 starting as you do to wake my body up. If no one else is on the range I will go and pick up after 10 balls. Probably only hit 2 drivers at the end. Then it’s off for coffee and sausage sandwich!
Great advice and presentation skills, and a very honest explanation of a driving range practice routine. Using the marker sticks on the range I will definitely be trying. Great comment about ball position too, I reckon many of my bad shots are down to wrong ball position not just a lack of ability.😅
That setting the second alignment stick parallel to the line of the ball is a great tip. I've been just dropping one and aiming it slightly left of the target. I need focus on quality and not quantity as you said.
Deliberate practice is important and key to getting better at most things in life. Pick a target, shape, line/aim point etc before stepping up makes it possible to determine if you succeeded - measuring is the only way to know if improving. Reviewing video is great to see if what you intended was executed. With all that said I still succeed in having golf range time work like meditation where I can disconnect from regular life.
Thanks Iona for a great video. Ive just returned from the range after hitting my new Titleist T400 irons. So different from my old 25 year old irons but felt it was a very positive session and looking forward to enjoying them out on the course here in Western Australia. Love your work. Xx
Excellent. Thank you again. I would love to have a similar video showing how you practice putting and chipping. In particular how you build confidence in putting. I am a 6 handicap golfer but a very poor putter.
Really interesting watch - thanks for sharing. Could you do a part two with your chipping/putting practice? That seems to be the area pros spend a lot more time on then amateurs, and is where shots tend to be gained/lost.
I hate to admit it, but as long as I have been playing golf, I have only recently adopted a similarly focused driving range session. In that time I have realized a marked improvement in my over all game. I really like the idea of 3 balls at 5 set intervals. Just enough to focus but not enough to fatigue. I’d love to hear about how you practice your tempo. Aside from set up, that is something that goes awry from time to time. Great content!
Love the tip on the set of three. That will help me focus. In one of your videos you explained a bit on the stats you keep. Would love to understand that scratch stat better.

Probably one of the most helpful videos on a practical level on how the process of training to play your best golf should be done
Perfect, I’ve been guilty of never having purpose on the range. This vid has given me direction thanks
I want to compliment you on how relaxed, chill and easy going you present the things you do. You are pure, all natural. Keep this up! I enjoy this very very much

Excellent advice, Iona! It took years before I understood the concept of “Quality over Quantity” at the range.
Such a great video! There are some really good ideas there that I’ll take to my next range session. I will try to remember “Quality over quantity” for all of my range sessions from now on! Thank you again, Iona!

The old adage of quality over quantity is one which we can all learn from. Many thanks Iona.
The importance of purpose, such a helpful perspective. Thanks Iona

Lovely video Iona, enjoying the content
Superb video. I for one, struggle when on the range. I go through the bag but with no real purpose and practice. I will definitely use this approach by splitting up balls into small groups. 👏
Really good reminder not to be mindless at the range which is my tendancy.
So helpful to get your guidance on proper practice Iona, I’m so guilty of whacking 110 balls in a session with little idea of whether I’m improving or just tiring myself out. Quality is the key! X
So glad this channel is back up and running!

Good to have a focus and a theme for the session
Such a useful video for a beginner golfer planning my range time!
Awesome and massively helpful. I'm restarting after 30+ years of not playing golf so things like this will get me going in the right direction ❤
Thanks for the tips on the alignment sticks. Extremely useful ideas to use on my next trip to the range ⛳️

Brilliant idea, definitely going to steal your practise regime. Need to find one of those phone mount thingies as well.
Your iron routine is exactly what i need ! Have been working on same issue . Will try that towel setup
We need an interview with the automated ball picker-upper. Never seen one of those before.
Great advice Iona - so many just pitch up to beat balls with no real purpose and wind up exhausted and sore. Really enjoying your series of videos - more please! A video explaining the benefits of swinging within yourself and making a solid strike vs trying to hit it hard would be great.

Faldo - esque drills ..loving the content Iona ..thank you 👍🇬🇧
Awesome content Iona, I learned this too late! Never take more than 25/30 balls now! Would like to see your chipping practice.
Your technique looks Awesome, I wish I could play like you do on a bad day keep up the good work and rest that wrist of your, keep up the great work loving the content
Great teachers always keep your attention, a lovely informative watch.

I agree, hitting range balls and practicing is great for de- stressing.
Fantastic insightful video. Thanks

Really helpful and really good to cover the basics of the alignment sticks
Thanks Iona. Some really good tips to take to the range.
The sets of 3 range balls is a really good idea 👍 It does really help a person slow down and think about what they are trying to accomplish.
Outstanding advice. I'm in my 50's and any driving range practice or even playing a round I feel back stiffness, soreness afterwards and next day. It's hard for me to stay under 30 balls, but I liked how you just kept it to 2 clubs and one thing.

Thank you Iona 🙏🙏⭐️⭐️ Paul
Fascinating to see your thought process Iona. I will defo use this going forward at the range rather than just seeing if I can get the 100 balls thru the back fence 🏌♂️💥⛳️
well worth the time on the range ,,,,,,,,,,,,,well explained Iona
Great tips Iona on alignment. Always struggle with this so these drills will be of great advantage for my game👍
I would love to see a video discussing drills to get better and more confident with chipping.
Always nice to see Iona 😊
Awesome practice routine I hope to use when I can practice
Loved it. Nice simple and structured routine. I used to get 100 balls and leave the range knackered and confused. Not a confidence builder.
Found the drill you shared very useful for my irons. Tried with less success for driver. Maybe you could show a drill you use for driver in the future. Keep up the good content.
Hi Iona, I watched this video and went to range, was next level solid contact! I’m a fan and I now will carry a towel in by bag!
super helpful to see how you approach practicing! definitely plan to be more intentional and less about quantity of balls too!
Fantastic advice. The two things i am taking away: 1) I need some alignment sticks, 2) I should try the towel trick to promote a more neutral swing plane and learn my natural tempo.
Excellent stuff Iona. You still have the best swing in golf! My range sessions are always great until I shank the last ball!
Might be time to walk away and leave that last ball for someone else.
Excellent drills , well structured with goals to work towards 👍
Another great video Iona. Love the tips and the drills you demonstrated I will have to give it a go next time I’m at the driving range. I’m guilty of just going through the whole bag hitting every club from wedge up to driver just aiming at different targets but not really putting much thought into technique. Loving the content and can’t wait for the next one
Great video and advice Iona 💪
Thanks for the video. I like the concept of purposeful practice and picking an item to work on. then checking to see if progress is made. Your chipping practice would be great to see. I struggle with chipping currently. Cheers!
I definitely like the idea of having a plan!
❤. Iona legend ..I feel for ur wrist problems but you know what bigger and happier things coming your way 💕💕
Thank you Iona. Your advice is always appreciated and delivered in an easily understandable way. Far too many coaches make it so difficult to understand. By the way you need a new glove lol.
Thanks Iona!
Great drills and advice! Also like the first stick to target then parallel off that. Like this calmer Iona also.
Sundays range drill sorted. Thank you Iona.
What a great lesson loved it
Good advice, I hit about 40 balls on the club practice area 14:21 starting as you do to wake my body up.
Great comment about ball position too, I reckon many of my bad shots are down to wrong ball position not just a lack of ability.😅
you are so cool Iona, thank you for your real content.
I agree with everything you say. Monday n Tuesday 20 golf balls maximum Wednesday Thursday 25 maximum
Awesome Iona!, But my OCD went off a little bit when I seen that pesky white ball sneak in amongst the yellows I wont lie 😂
Fascinating, thank you 🙏
That setting the second alignment stick parallel to the line of the ball is a great tip.
Xx
Very wise. I'm sure I've hurt the muscles in my right arm trying to do too much on the range and without enough focus. Thanks Iona.
Another great video keep them coming
Excellent. Thank you again. I would love to have a similar video showing how you practice putting and chipping. In particular how you build confidence in putting. I am a 6 handicap golfer but a very poor putter.
Thank you Iona
Are there any putting drills you could show us Iona? Love your show and love your golf!
Love the tip on the set of three. That will help me focus. In one of your videos you explained a bit on the stats you keep. Would love to understand that scratch stat better.
Great tips!!
Thanks. Very useful video. Very efficient approach to practice.
