He may not have won the WC in 1993 but, for me 1993 was Senna’s finest season. He grabbed a woefully underperforming car by the scruff of neck and managed to win 5 GPS and still finish 2nd in the WC. That car had no business winning like that. But he made it happen. “That” performance at Donington, the 6th win at Monaco and another masterpiece demonstration in the rain at Interlagos were just some of the highlights of a truly remarkable season of which only he could have delivered.
Actually that years mclaren was a brilliant chassis with its active suspension programme, check what Mika had to say about it. It was just that Ford Cosworth was down on power compared to the Renault and the latest development of the Ford engine in the Benneton
Mark Stedman Absolutely. When I say “car” I’m referring to the combined package...... but as you correctly say, that’s a little bit unfair on the chassis 😊
@@markstedman8186 Which "years" ? If you refer to the 1993 car was really a good car, not only Mika but Ayrton also confirmed that (actually it made him change his mind about retiring - remember, Senna had not a contract yet). But brilliant?? Williams was brilliant, a masterpiece of car. If Ayrton gave us that show with the McLaren, I can only imagine what Senna would have done in that Williams (he was able to equal Prost times driving that unbalanced FW16... go figure) Damon Hill - FW15C Brazil 1993: 1.15.929 Damon Hill - FW16 Brazil 1994: 1.17.554 *(almost 2 seconds slower than HIMSELF with the FW16)* Prost - FW15C Brazil 1993: 1.15.886 Senna - FW16 Brazil 1994: 1.15.962 (only 0.07 from Prost - Senna was a GENIUS, not from this world)
Prophetic words at the end about death and risk. Had he stayed with Maclaren, he'd still be around today. The Williams car was so dependent on active suspension (moreso than the Maclaren) that it was downright dangerous without it.

Drive to Survive is an insult to intelligence. Just that American silly drama is too much for me to handle. I’m glad that it gave a lot of attention to F1 but I’m concerned with the “quality” of fans that it will bring.
Interesting to hear about the MP4/8 not being as fast on the straights as the Williams Renault's. That's part of why Senna almost instantly fell in love with the Lamborghini V12 test car that year, because it was fast especially after the changes that he suggested to the engineers were done. Its a pity that Ron Denis decided to go with Peugeot instead.
In retrospect, Ron Dennis had more respect for his driving talent whereas Frank Williams and Patrick Head always put themselves ahead of the drivers. If Senna had stayed at McLaren, likely he would still be alive and Dennis would have acquiesced to making a Lamborghini engine deal. What may have been.
@@chrisclermont456 unfortunately no. Senna had already signed with Williams for 1994 not long after Prost announced that he would be retiring at the end of 1993. Whether McLaren went with the Lamborghini or not didn't make any difference in whether or not Senna would stay with the team. He was already signed to Williams before McLaren even tested the Lambo V12's.
There too many ifs ...Senna died and nothing could change that fact maybe in parallel universe he still alive but in our universe his fate was what it was, 50 years from now everyone mostly will be dead from 1994, and his legendary status will stay forever
When he was very young, he'd do this with his go carts. He said with his father & another guy..try different carburetors, tires, etc I heard this in one of the documentaries and interviews.
Awesome series, Mclaren always had engine issues, going forward in the 90s with a more super corporate appeal perhaps did its damage as we can see now.
I love this documentary but you feel like there is far more going on than the two guarded individuals would ever express. Talking specifically about Ron Dennis and Ayrton Senna. Does anybody have an interesting book to read about this early 90s F1 time?
. Sim.

Had the Williams mechanics been aware that the steering shaft would not hold, they would have got it straight and there would have been no crash, and Ayrton would still be here! I believe Ayrton would’ve won at least one more championship if not two! He had the world by the tail!
Senna looks fed up. He reminds me of Alonso. A break from f1 would have done him good. You can mistake him for a prima-donna, he's not putting much work he always looks as if he knows it all whilst everyone around him is frantically trying to do a good job, but on the other hand it is not like he is heavily criticizing his engineers, in this documentary he does not seem to care much, passive aggressive kind of look.

10:02 literally oversterred at 160mph can you imagine
What an era the 80s and early 90s
the wheels are doing something else than the steering wheel, the top and bottom half of the screen are edited together
Head movement also very similar to Imola 1994 - adds more weight to the oversteer theory at Tamburello imho

Senna, Fangio, and Clark. 1,2 and 3.

Always jealous of Aryton.
Anyone have any idea what's going on with that car at 10:03? Turning the wheel out of curve grande yet the car is turning in?

Catching and correcting a slide maybe?
