“Songs For Drella” has been one of my favorite albums since it came out. I’m forever grateful that John and Lou were able to put aside their differences long enough to make it.
i don't know much about reed's guitar playing but i love it here and i love cale's natural energy on piano. it's beautiful and this is coming from someone who hates piano.
They were both equally talented. Even though I love all of VU'S albums, the first two with John Cale were the most groundbreaking. Nobody can deny that!
(After enjoying this as much as possible) (and among the many marvels of this collaboration) please take also note that Lou Reed deploys the ELECTRIC GUITAR as it's supposed to be played - a sonic scalpel.
Huge fan of the first 2 Velvet Underground albums, but I'm sorry this song and the album it comes from "Songs for Drella" are the BEST thing John Cale and Lou Reed EVER did together. I have always felt a sense of kinship for Warhol (the album was a tribute for the man who had made their *lives*, not just careers), but this song cemented it. We came from much the same starting point to somewhat seperate ends, but Andy drew the map I followed. This is the SOUL of Warhol, Cale, Reed and, oh yeah, Jonathan Warman
Listened this morning. Had not played this record in far too many years. Caused temporary, minor side effects. But: Astonishing performances by all!!!! Mr Reed: Mr Cale: and all: thanks
This is the one-take they did for the cameras. The guitar solos are slightly different from the album's. Lou Reed lets it rip here, with the static and the amp leakage but a master throughout. Absolutely brilliant track, sheer brilliance.

Absolutely, schould have been co-credited for the music on TVU&N and WL/WH. He made their sound, but Reed would make the world believe it was entirely all down to him and took all the fame.
@@ForARide that's rubbish, the tracks are listed where appropriate Reed, Cale,Morrison, Tucker. And if you watch the documentary that accompanied the reforming of the group in 93, Lou is perfectly comfortable with giving the other members due credit and sings the praises of all their talents.
@@bendream544 Rubbish? Just a few quotes and facts: Moe Tucker: - "John was very inventive, lets do that, and lets try this...he had more to do with the songs becoming what they were.. the final product had a lot more to do with John, than people maybe realize." (THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: Night Games / Under Review [Full Documentary]: ua-cam.com/video/VkmWAjXb6YA/v-deo.html at 19:25) - "When John left it was really sad, this was really going to influence the music because John´s a lunatic. We became a little bit more normal, it was never the same again. (same source at 43:17) - "I know the music wouldn´t be the same without any of us, but without John certainly there would be a big difference in the music." (John Cale documentary (1998): ua-cam.com/video/LwNpOXFvCNE/v-deo.html at 17:52) Sterling Morrison: - "John was rebelling against his formal training, he used to drive us crazy. In order to copyright a song you have to come out with a lead sheet, which is just a transcription by notes and you put down the lyrics. For Lou and me it was quite difficult to do these things, we had to sit around and write notes (annotations) how to write music. We can read and write music, but it´svery hard, you have to think. John could do it immediately. But he refused, we could never get him to do the lead sheets." (Sterling Morrison Full Tv interview 1986: ua-cam.com/video/ZY4PTXR-vg0/v-deo.html at 04:07) - "We had good times in the band, so that´s why it´s so strange that Lou should want John out... I don´t remember any reason really being given, except that he couldn´t stand playing with John anymore for upteen and inexpressible reasons. So I don´t know, maybe Lou got jealous." (same sorce at 20:08) Lou Reed: - " I always loved playing with John, he is easily one of the most inspiring musicians to play with... music runs out of him like water down a mountain... and it´s always there and it´s always interesting, and it´s always really great fun to play against, because he´s not playing what I would play." (John Cale documentary (1998): ua-cam.com/video/LwNpOXFvCNE/v-deo.html at 00:39) Norman Dolph (Producer of VU Sceptor Sessions in 1966 said Cale was the creative producer, as he handled the majority of the arrangements. (Joe Havard - The Velvet Underground & Nico 33 1/3; 2004 Continumm Publishing Group) Much of the album's sound was conceived by John Cale, who stressed the experimental qualities of the band. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Velvet_Underground_%26_Nico) Here are some recordings of the early Velvets (1965) and how Lou Reed originally composed them: I'm Waiting For The Man (demo 1965): ua-cam.com/video/taCjAIWg36c/v-deo.html All Tomorrow's Parties (demo 1965): ua-cam.com/video/UmE-uQyzb40/v-deo.html Venus In Furs (demo 1965): ua-cam.com/video/mJ96_jGAmCY/v-deo.html Here She Comes Now (demo 1965) :ua-cam.com/video/t1vjKENo-IY/v-deo.html Heroin (demo 1965): ua-cam.com/video/weRw8vTKzAw/v-deo.html All to be found on the Peel Slowly And See box set. So Cale´s enormous contribution to the Velvets sound and music is evident. For years Cale and Reed would have lawsuits about copyright issues. So maybe you should rethink your statement. And if this ain´t enough I have about 15 books on The Velvets I would recommend you to read, which further confirm my point. And as for the Velvets reunion tour in 1993, Reed wanted the rest of the band to play some of his solo stuff. Cale would have none of that BS. That was the end to the US tour. To close my statement I´ll once again quote Lou Reed: "I only hope that one day John will be recognized as ... the Beethoven or something of his day. He knows so much about music, he's such a great musician. He's completely mad - but that's because he's Welsh."
