She did have that snarky side! Loved her visual revenge thought in "Just Like This Train." Got me through a few break-ups! So many of us identified with her in one way or another through her vulnerability.

I recently discovered just how great a singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell is. I grew up only hearing a small sample of her more popular songs which where often played on the radio. After discovering how good her 1st album is, I bought box sets of all her Reprise and Asylum albums from 1968-1975, and I'm amazed how good virtually every song is! Funny how you can make such a discovery after 50+ years.

Growing up in Australia in the 70s, I only ever heard ‘Big Yellow Taxi’
I bought Blue in the 90s on a recommendation from a book & it blew me away completely
I tried Court & Spark & was a little disappointed but upon repeat plays it is now my favourite of hers. I found the same thing with Pet Sounds too after listening to all the Beach Boys singles. Just takes a little time occasionally.
I really like For The Roses. For me it’s a bridge from Blue to Court & Spark.
I really envy those who heard these albums as they came out. Very special moments in time.

Tonight (3/31/2023) I watched The Library of Congress Gershwin Award for pop song … awarded to Joni Mitchell. The show was 1.5 hours of her songs performed by other artists. It was f a n t a s t i c! I highly recommend trying to check it out. Joni herself performed the Gershwin song Summertime and her song Circle Time. 2 years ago she suffered a brain aneurysm and was in a coma. It’s amazing she’s still with us and can still perform.

Knowing the history behind the song makes it twice as crushing. It’s great to know that she was able to meet her daughter for the first time when her daughter was about 35 years old. And this song has become a universal ode to the countless people for whom the joy of the holiday season seems almost unbearable, for whatever reasons.

Just came home and found this - nice surprise 😀 Talking about emotions, it's one of the reasons, why I follow a handful other channels and I have to say - I hope it's ok - but Nick is the most emotional man, that I have seen in youtube. Usually the guys are just cool and do "smart" comments ... so let the tears flow, we love you for that, and maybe even sometimes cry a little with you 🥲 Honestly I can't remember, when a song made me cry for the first time, but lately I made the experience, that even an instrumental song, which is played with passion, can get my eyes wet.... might come with the age, too.
So, what can I say about this Joni song : simply beautiful ❤

Hi Rudi , Happy New Year ! ... I cry more at the music than lyrics with few exceptions like this song by Joni with the lyrics + voice being so dominant and just a piano. What gets me every time is a guitar solo and even a guitar riff can do it....[ Rush "Bravado" hits me in seconds ] Orchestral music, usually a movie soundtrack can get me emotional. [ Last of the Mohicans main theme is no1 on my emotional list. The cd is impossible to play without tears ] Anyway , wishing you all the best for 2023 Rudi !

@@jimled50jl49 Hi Jim, my brother in sneezing and having a dripping nose, it got me too. 😆 I think each solo played with emotions can get you, no matter if piano, guitar, saxofone and especially the violin; maybe that's even the first time, when I felt like this with Kansas. Other goosebump songs were Stairway to heaven (not any more) Red Barchetta by Rush and the Sax in King Crimson's Starless.
Can "we play a game" ? Do you know Chris Botti ? On his live in Boston DVD he has a song Emanuel, just him and the violin player and some orchestra ... I wonder, if you "react" to this beautiful song ... take your time... can be next year 🤣🤣🤣

@@jimled50jl49 Good morning Jim, last day of 2022 has begun, I'm looking forward to tonight's concert, we are going to see Beethoven's 9th symphony played by orchestra in Düsseldorf; I'm also looking forward to my next marathon, Nick said it's gonna be out soon, it's some kind of retrospection with music from happy to heavy, ending with a beautiful, sad song ... I'm not gonna say more
Usually I don't tell anybody "you must", but in the case of Chris Botti it's the ultimate kick to get the full emotion of this specific song, when you SEE this tiny female violin player. I love the passion, when she plays and the emotions on her face .. almost unique ... I'm excited about your comment.
Enjoy the last hours of 2022 and Happy New Year to you and all your beloved ones. Let's hope for peace, love and health in 2023❤ .. and of course more great music 🤘

Jan 29 : with my "metal-son" Tim we are going to see Jinjer and Bullet for my valentine
Feb 08 : with my best friend Olli we are going to see Dream Theater (for the 18th time)🤭
Mar 09 : with my son we are going to see the Australian Pink Floyd show playing The Dark Side of the moon
these are fixed: further plans are RPWL, The Watch (italian Genesis cover band of the 70s) Winery Dogs
Sep 12 : AYREON, yes we made it, the first 9000 tickets were sold in 10 minutes, didn't get any for the first extra show, but then Olli got lucky so it's gonna be an unusual Saturday noon show ....who cares ...
I'm only looking for some nice jazz/jazzfusion concert ... maybe some Candy Dulfer ..

My modern tastes are more Porcupine Tree & Pineapple Thief when it comes to prog. I love smooth jazz & Jazz fusion. I'm actually getting into trio's & quartets with the stand up bass. I had never listened to any of Joni's full albums until 1983, when I was in Grad school, my mid 20's, and I'm glad that it happened then, and not when I was younger. Both "Blue" and "For the Roses" found their way into my life and they were stunning revelations. I had that feeling of disappointment that many "reactors" might experience where I wished I had known that I was missing this brilliant artist. Nick, it's great to see you express your emotions. I'm a 75-year-old born in an era when it wasn't cool for a man to cry. Now's the time for all of us, men and women, to embody the Divine Feminine, and you're surely doing that Nick. I honor you for that. And it's great to see young people embrace real music. You and Lex are a joy to watch.

Because of my age, I have the sheer joy of experiencing Joni's music as it was released. Her biographical story telling through song is unmatched IMHO. I have just recently repurchased many of her CDs as replacements for heavily used vinyl. Joni is a pure delight. Thanks Guys. Happy New Year. PS her Jazz infused later work (often collaborating with Jaco Pastorius) is not to be understated or missed.

Even if your circumstance isn't the same as Joni's I think many people have had a hard situation with someone around the holidays. It makes what should be a happy season really difficult and sad. There's really no worse time to be going through it.

What more needs to be said that hasn't already been said? Great reaction to a great song. Even nearly 50 years later it sparkles despite its heartbreaking theme of the loss of a relationship around Christmas time. Like Nick, I always loved the piano-only backing and the _Jingle Bells_ motif. Joni's voice, as was common during these years of her career, just soars into that high, sweet soprano that pulls at the heartstrings.
The photos of her skating on the lake would show up for the _Hejira_ album art, and that "Black Crow" costume is seen in the music video for _Hejira_ (backed by the _Shadows and Light_ live recording), and also features late figure skater Toller Cranston. Both the studio version and the live version are very worthy of a reaction (more Jaco Pastorius!).

This and 'A Case of You' are also my favorite of hers (or of anyone). SO glad to have Lex back, even for a short time. (I am curious of where Lex is in her Genesis journey)
