These tractors are underrated. Once they switched to the step through chassis, they weren't as strong. But for a vertical shaft engine, Hydro-Gear rear end, they could do plowing and other ground engaging activities.
The first six numbers of the serial number are the dates of Craftsman mowers in case anybody wants to know. The first two are the month the second two are the day and the third two are the year. Mine is 04 01 04 so that is April 1st 2004
Have one. Great tractor. Heavy frame and solid. Electric PTO. Mine has the manual gears with Hi/Lo range. Cuts great with a 48" deck. Reminds me of the JD 318 I used to have and love. Engine has plenty of HP to power the deck and it cuts really well.
Now I have to replace the deck belt. I hit something in my yard called iron weed, and my belt twisted due to it. I'd never had that happen before. Looks like I'll be push mowing that area of the yard. My push mower doesn't even bog down when it hits them.
Got one of these when my dad bought it new to mow the farm. Had constant problems with it throwing or chewing up the deck belt. Sears belts were too expensive to replace one every time I mowed, Since I worked at the auto parts , I tried gates green belts which lasted a bit longer and went with a certain inch belt using a size wider belt than what it calls for. Genuine Sears kevlar belts were no good. Finally sears offered to replace the deck and it still threw and chewed belts. Sears repair and my boss both came out to make sure I was putting it on correctly, It was absolutely correct and did the same with them . Throwing and chewing the belts. Finally my brother took it home to his house and welded an extra bracket on the deck to make it stronger. Finally the belts stayed on but only on one condition, and that is you did not shut the mower off and take a break. Because as soon as you stop and shut off, return and start, it broke the belt. I reach under there to pull it out and discovered that the electric clutch pulley was getting red hot , which in turn was melting the belts and they were losing their strength after sitting on there and melting internally for a few minutes! The only way to keep the belt on, was to blow the pulley immediately with a blower when done mowing or let the mower belt sit and cool before restarting. Been that way since its been new and deck comes off every winter for the plow to be installed. Worst mower ever for belts.
Explains a lot. I've gone through 1 belt per mowing season. I was just informed after plugs replaced, & carb cleaned, I need a new belt. The 1 I put on last year is stretched. My dad said keep the Craftsman and buy a pull behind finishing mower. My neighbor just replaced the belt on his GT4000 after his nephew used it and broke the belt. New belt cost him $36 last year. This year same manufacturer belt is $65....
@@colonel9990 I have bought belts off of Amazon that are actually coming from lawn mower parts places. The last belt is still going for three years now since I learned it's quirks. Last night I broke the secondary belt we which has never been changed since 2003. I have about 5 acres that I use it for. It's always been the primary belt that rides on that electric clutch pulley.
Sorry I've not gotten back to y'all on your questions. This past year hasn't been a good 1. So many deaths in my family. Sense this video a neighbor borrowed my mower, and toasted my deck belt mowing 3'-4' tall grass, and I've not gotten it replaced yet. Lesson here is don't let neighbors borrow your mower. He returned it, and didn't tell me about the belt. I found out the following week when I used it to cut my 4" tall grass. Belt started smoking and jumped the pulley. After removing it, I saw a 2" spot in the belt that was half as thick as the rest of the belt. I'm still going to try to get the questions answered soon as I can.
My GT500 came with a 46" deck. Started to use oil and foul a spark plug but changing head gaskets fixed that. Still looking for an easy way to drain the oil, it's a pain.
I'm taking it the dyt 4000 is the lawn mower that has the smaller back tires mine has the garden tractor tires but the calling has 4000 but I believe mine is a 5000 or a 6000
My neighbor has a 4000 with the garden tires. Maybe someone changed them out. Mine originally had the garden tires and were changed out for the turf tires. They cost less. I've got a Massey Ferguson 2606 with the garden tires. They're better for pulling heavy loads. Better bite.
I haven't been able to raise my deck using the handle on the right. It always sites on the ground. Are you able to raise the deck when you are not cutting?
@@psulatino27 I am able to raise and lower my deck with the lever on the right. Maybe try to adjust the knob on the left. Not positive, but I think it applies tension on the lever to keep it from drooping to low. I've not really messed with mine, but maybe your's is in the tightened position.
I'd say look on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, etc. Buy another tractor for parts. There's also a CRAFTSMAN page on Facebook you could join. I'm a member on it. Those guys could probably help ya better than I can. I'll get the link to the FB page, and post it below.👇🏼
Turn the height adjustment knob to a desired height. When you release the deck lowering lever, it'll never go lower than the height you set. It's like a height lock.
@@ryanreacts6 it's the round knob I show on the bottom left. Near the step through floor area. It also has that gauge on the left outer side of the mower. I haven't adjusted mine any lower than it was when I bought the tractor, because where it is now the grass blades are about 2.5" long, and that's about how high I keep my lawn. I have adjusted the height on a Wheelhouse my dad dropped off. And it works the same as on my Craftsman. Once you adjust the dial to your desired height, it won't drop any lower then that when you release the height lever on the right.

The tall grass can be hard on the PTO that engage the blades. Those are not cheap.

When you have the throttle lever at full like that, the engine RPMs should be higher, you might want to adjust that so you get a better cut quality.
Thank you. I'll check that.
Got carb issues with it surging like it does.
Thank you. Probably need to clean and adjust air/fuel mixture.
Damn man I thought my yard had a lot of kids toys in it... I was wrong lol
And, that's for only 1 kid. LOL
Make sure you keep it covered so that you don't have to buy a gas tank a used one on eat runs 200 to 250 dollars.
Avoid the Kohler v twin if possible as the Briggs and stratton vanguard and ELS series 26 HP and 22 HP last and perform much longer
