- Paul Wolff is a revered figure in the audio, design, and recording industry, having owned API Audio and ToneLux Designs, and worked for Datatronix for several years. With over four decades of experience, he is a prominent figure in the recording world, having consulted on some of the biggest audio design projects. Moreover, his latest venture, Fix Audio Designs, has been a huge success. In 1975, he started designing professional audio equipment, and his contributions have been invaluable. Mr. Wolff's friendship with Sunset Sound owner, Paul Camarata, goes back more than 40 years, and they have collaborated on numerous projects. Notably, Mr. Wolff purchased the famous Bushnell API Recording Console of Studio 1, on which renowned artists such as Van Halen, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones recorded. The console later found its way back to LA with famed producer T-Bone Burnett. Together, the two Pauls have worked on the famed "Tutti" Pre-Amp, which will be back in stock soon on www.sunsetsoundstore.com. I never get tired of interviews like this. Guys like Paul are a walking encyclopedia of audio recording history. Their story needs to be recorded for history sake.
This really is one of the best audio podcast episodes I've heard, excellent work.

This entire series of Sunset Sound interviews is history and quite fascinating. All of them. This episode with Mr's Wolff and Camarata is the best so far. So much inside scoop and history on studio electronics engineering in sound recording. The convo brought out a lot of the give and take in the biz - the music and process drives the engineering. The engineering adapts and drives the recording techniques in return. Evolution. Couldn't help but to get Super geeked out on the conversation. Wish there were big enough words to say thanks for capturing this history, the stories, and putting it out there for all to see and learn from. The Best.
I bought in 2022 a 16ch API 2488 for a lot of money, and restored it pretty much to new state, I was lucky the B550A EQ's were in good shape. This console is my favorite from all, I love a fat and saturated sound. And this console provides this. I spend a long time to get the console back on track. But it was worth the time and money. Now a studio offered me the double of the price that I paid, but this console doesn't go anywhere, but here. Interesting podcast. [edit] it weights a ton, I had once a Allen&Heat GM console, also 16ch, but was a lot of lighter, for the API I removed every part, before shipping it to my workplace [/edit]
I am just a guitar player not really into all the tech. But. What guy. And the stories. Legend.
I'll tell you a secret Jeff Beck told me.......all the fancy gear , consoles, EQ, mic preamps etc have about 1/10 the effect on the recorded sound as the fingers of the guitar player.
Experts like PAUL are essential to the magic of modern audio recording. What a career and appears to be a really nice gentleman. Kudos. Sunset Sound

Rarely do I find people who speak my language, such a delight. I lived and breathed console design and manufacture in the 90's. Some of the most brilliant audio electronics engineers, programmers and studio gear geeks teamed up to make the first digitally controlled analog large format consoles and funneled all the months pf design components to my team and asked us to build , test and troubleshoot the whole finished product. The most fun part of the whole creative inventing process!. The design team nailed it and we took on Neve and SSL right out of the gate. Eventually Wall street killed the company and the magic and success left when the visionary and founder gave the reins to a Wall Street CEO and the best of us burnt out and left.
I have so much respect for Mr. Wolf and he is legendary in my mind. I couldn't have done what we did without what he did first. Thanks for this video. Ive watched in twice and really appreciated every word. I wish it were a weekly discussion,
The audio quality is so nice, it doesn't bite you, with very little fatigue. I was just listening to a podcast and one person is barely at a whisper and the other is cutting my head off. Very relaxing, thank you.

This guy ought to be giving classes on the history recording technology. I guess I could find some of this info in books, but it’s fascinating to hear this history weaved into a narrative.

I was a process engineer for an electronics company when RoHS became a thing. Sn whiskers/ dendritic growth, were a huge problem. SnAg solder had a much hotter melting point, had much less plastic range and is actually worse for the environment. We then moved to SnAgCu, which had a little lower melting point. Silver is more harmful, in less concentration than lead. All that was needed to avoid that mess was adequate ways to recycle electronics produced with SnPb solder. We didn't have to move away from SnPb.

The City of LA had a couple relatively small compliance companies on their approved labeling list! One was in Burbank, called Electro Energy corp,. I was a senior engineer there and always did the pro audio manufacturers a great deal.You didn;t need ULand we made it easy to get power supplies and audio gear approved! Sorry you were led into compliance nightmares.

Interesting. I just did a (very) quick read of litz wire. Looks like the primary use was to reduce skin effect in xformer winding used at RF levels. I have a couple tube Amp projects on my bench and I'm studying to upgrade my amateur radio license. Cool background info that may never be useful, but I'll sound so smart... lol. Amazing stories about designing the pre amps and the eq's and custom building recording consoles. I'll have to ask my brother what kind of board he recently recorded on... he might still be doing sessions...

1:29:05 Paisley Park Studio B was *not* a replica of Sunset Sound studio 3, in fact both Studio A and Studio B have identical control rooms, which are based on Electric Lady Studio B, but they are about 30% larger than it.

@@sunsetsoundrecorders, apart from the DeMedio Paisley has nothing in common with Sunset Sound, unless you guys also had Westlake 5 ways with dual 18s? I worked at Paisley for years, starting before it was finished in 1987. A & B are identical rooms and based on Electric Lady's B control room. Have a look at some photos of EL B and compare then to Paisley A&B rooms.
