    In the inimitable style of Admiral Ackbar, "It's a trap!"
    Thank you very much for the "scene cut on the beat can lead to prediction of next scene cut" potential trap. I did it deliberately with my lightning storm vid, but deliberately spaced the scene cuts out randomly so it would not be too predictable.
    Recently started editing together a birthday photo and was watching the opening scenes and thinking - hmmm should I line those transitions up on beats, but now see that it does not necessarily add value, and in fact may end up being more of a distraction.
    Good point, much obliged.
    Sound is definitely important. The landing pelican scene is infinitely better. I cannot understand the number of kickstarter vids that have no monologue, and some even have no sound. I was reading an article on selling an indie film and the message there was story > sound > vision. Certainly not something you consider to start with as a beginner movie maker, in my experience.
    Thanks again.

    I'm in the process of creating my own reel and I've been having this problem with thinking "I need more impressive shots" As well as trying to decide if I want to combine motion graphics with my wedding cinematography.
    I just started watching your videos and you have helped me so much with these decisions. I'll be picking up some apples today. Thank you!

    Great video Simon! I recently did a showreel as part of my end of year project at film school! I was wondering if I could get your advice for whenever I need to make my next showreel in regards to music? In this first one I made, I took projects that I did throughout the year and ones outside of school. However a lot of the videos I used already had music in them, so it made it difficult for me to really put a special song into my showreel because it would overlap with the music that's already there. I did think to perhaps remove the audio, but a lot of the videos I made were very dialogue and story heavy, so I couldn't really remove it. I still think my showreel turned out great, I was just wondering about what I should perhaps do the next time around?

I've watched a lot of tutorials on how to help this and I've done everything I've seen and it still doesn't look cinema. Maybe it's just the camera??

    Love the Vid! But I have a Question: some people online are saying that you should NOT use copyright music for the Showreel.. What do you think? I got here a very nice piece (CC) but some famous beats would be way better(in my opinion).

      DSLRguide You said on your website and your videos, that you are making short movies since you are 11. You talk about filming out of copyright stories, making a short film every month and recreating a scene from a famous movie. There must be a lot of your movies, but they are nowhere on your channel. Where can we see them?

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  9 років тому +1

      The Kaiser A lot of my early video are not on the internet - they are just too embarrassing! You can see bits of them in this video: ua-cam.com/video/JhX06VroP48/v-deo.html Everything else that I have put online is on my second channel: ua-cam.com/users/cadevisuals (I havn't done out of copyright stories, making short film every month etc those were just suggestions if people don't know what do to).

    Hi, most of the time we don't really save a copy of all the rushes, which could take up a lot of space if shot in 4k or 8k. So we only keep the final cut which is in H264, but when there's a need to re-edit for a showreel, is it recommended to edit from the H264 file, even though the overall quality of the picture would drop?

  • @CSMMovingCamera
    @CSMMovingCamera 8 років тому

    Your videos always appear so clean. I'm having pixelation issues with my personal videos. The videos often look great in the timeline and on my media player once they've been exported. My issue comes when I upload to UA-cam and Vimeo. Do you have any tips or tricks to exporting for that silky smooth footage?

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  8 років тому

      +CSM MovingCamera I literally just go with default H.264 settings out of final cut. UA-cam does compress stuff a lot, so if you're using film grain then it tends to look awful on YT. Otherwise the best thing you can do is focus on lighting - that's why Hollywood films still look great on DVD at compressed 480p

    Hi Simon. I've just recently discovered your channel, and I must say I really learn a lot from all your videos. You're very talented!
    I have a small question. I'm about to buy my first real microphone, and I wonder if you could give me an advice. I've noticed you've used both the Rode VideoMic Pro and the NTG-2. But which one would you recommend? Is the NTG-2 worth the extra money?
    I already have a Zoom to plug it into, so that's not a concern.

    • @DSLRguide
      @DSLRguide  9 років тому

      Andreas Lodahl Thanks! I think the NTG-2 is worth the extra money, especially when you have a zoom. However, the videomic pro does give you some versatility to use it directly into the camera. So unless you shoot a lot of stuff where you can't use the zoom, definitely go for the NTG

My other question is do you know any resources for editor to find quality projects to work on, im not that much of a camera man and me and my famliy live pay check by pay check to buy equipment to be able to do my own work and i rather be editing others work anyway

      +Marcus Abraham Reynier Agustin I've never made an editing reel, but I imagine you use every project that you'd been the official 'editor' on (even if it's your own projects). You've just got to show off what you can do with the timing / order of shots :)

      +Matthew Alfaro if I were you, i'd stay away from copyrighted music. UA-cam will put advertisements on your videos, and give all of the revenue to the label that owns the song.. which means you can never earn a cent from your work.

    Hi, just a question here. What if you have only like 2 short films, in your opinion, is it still able to be edited? Or maybe there are better solutions to this problem on limited works.
