abwo47 The Germans were still nice to you in contrast to what you did with the Indonesians, even after the Second World War or what you did. in your former colonies. In the Dutch overseas territories, the greed for profit of Dutch merchants creates immense misery. Because like the monarchical colonial powers of Europe, the United Provinces, which are so tolerant on the inside, enforce their economic interests in Africa, Asia and America with relentless harshness. The subjugation of the Banda Islands (now Indonesia) belonging to the Moluccas is particularly bloody: in 1621, soldiers burn down villages and settlements there on the orders of the Governor General of the VOC, abducting numerous men, women and children at slave markets. They kill, resist, torture, divide, and behead more than 40 chiefs. The survivors flee to the interior of the islands - where they eventually starve. It was not until 1863 that the Netherlands officially abolished slavery as one of the last European countries. In the meantime, Dutch merchants have carried around 600,000 African prisoners across the Atlantic - and sold a further 100,000 slaves directly from their trading bases on the African west coast to other European traders.

@@delanovanraalte3186 well roughly 5 to 7 days because I know some kept fighting after the official surrender. They hold out a long time considering the size of the country anyway
The Dutch surrendered only after the nazi's bombed Rotterdam killing between 650 - 800 civilians. The nazi's had to resort to this due to unexpected resistance and delay.
@@delanovanraalte3186 well there was some miscommunication that led to the bombing of Rotterdam I believe. But they had not officially surrendered but were planning to.
My grandad who was in the British Army in WW2 always said that the Dutch were good people and had the utmost respect for them. They had everything thrown at them and even when the German invasion was successful, they still didn't lie down and take crap. Love the Dutch ❤️ awesome people.
Greetings my Dutch friend from an American from "New Amsterdam". My uncle was shot down over Holland. Thanks for all assistance that the Dutch provided him. When will you tell the great story of New Amsterdam and those Dutch businessmen who paid $24 for Manhattan?
Actually we didn't pay $24 FOR it, we paid $24 in trinkets to "pacht" it .. to rent and be allowed to exploit! By dutch law at the time it remained Indian property!
And lets not forget the loan that was granted to the young american republic just after their independance. If the tradesmen in antwerp had turned them down, the american economy wouldnt have been as quick to recover after the fighting ended. Antwerp was dutch back then. And for those days in May 1940, i walked the battlefields many times and it is clear that without a defense in depth and with the type of officers they had to deal with (men like Haberts for instance) there wasnt more to give than they have done. But thats just my opinion
Hi, my grandfather helped out Allied pilots who found themselves on Dutch soil during the war. He had a register of all people that hid in his home. Multiple books were written about the resistance circle he was in. May I ask your uncle's name? Maybe my grandfather knew him. :)
@@stijnvdv2 " an efficient country sees a big military that doesn't get used as a waste of money." They waited to practically hear bullets whistling by to start preparing for war and to even just think about modernizing the forces. And they were positively thrashed, with comparatively only a few victories and rightful claims to success that were, alas for them, merely tactical and very local successes with almost no influence on the outcome of the war (except for that battle when the Queen and other VIPs were not captured and could be shipped or "air-lifted" to the UK). That is no efficiency. At best, that is a very short-sighted management. Some people (I admit, myself included) would be tempted to use a much more "colourful" vocabulary. "He whose thoughts do not range far will see troubles close at hand", to sum it up. "Prim-minister de Witt, that got killed and eaten by an angry crowd" What? Eaten??? Thanks for sharing this impressive battle story. I feel like the Netherlands invasion is overlooked outside of the bombing of Rotterdam. The Dutch defended well in several engagements against an extremely trained, world class army. It's stunning to see how many soldiers the Dutch captured. The defenders familiarity with their homeland and quick reaction to deploy troops can overcome some of the best weapons and soldiers. Once the panzer brigades and Luftwaffe got involved the inevitable outcome was reached fast as expected. In the beginning infantry gun battles the Dutch punched above their weight with well executed defensive victories. The Falschirmjäger had shown their decisiveness at fort Eben Emael. The Dutch however were able to make use of their entire inventory albeit meager on paper it was absolutely effective in the defensive victory, with multi strike attacks using aircraft, infantry, artillery and even a destroyer off the coast that shelled the invaders near the beach. 1600+ captured. 125 aircraft destroyed.
so why did the Dutch government surrend so quickly while the army was still fighting. They the Dutch government and Dutch/German royalty fled to Brittain. It took a lot of canadian and allied lives to bring freedom back to Holland.
@@cumbaja3456 the difference is that the war was already lost due to the fact that france and brittain were losing too. It would have been pointles to lose even more city's to bombing raids
What I have heard in the past is that the Netherlands taking out so many paratroopers and the planes made the invasion of Crete more difficult and this in time made the Germans scrap the idea of using paratroopers against the British. So sort of a knock on effect. Any credence to that?
yup. Dutch AA was pretty effective, especially the airfield defenses. It would have worked as a surprise attack on the first day, not delayed as it was. There was some confusion where Dutch troops let paratroopers land rather than shooting them while still on their parachutes, as they had been told to not shoot at pilots bailing out of their aircraft, but that didn't last long when they realised what was really going on.
The Dutch may have been taken out quickly, but when they escaped to Britain they became even greater warriors. Some of the first SAS were Dutch marines who were keen to get their country back.
there where a lot of non English SAS members, and after the war a lot of them went home and introduced the SAS in there country, this is why for example Belgium has a SAS force.
@@GarudaLeader I wanted to mention the Prinses Irene Brigade as well. They have always been regarded as high quality troops by all allied forces they fought with.

Well, it's not like the Danes could do much either. I mean, look at how many tanks they had (if they had any), how many planes, how modern these were, how many men at arms, how trained they were, what their morale was, etc. And the terrain was much less favourable to defence. No wide or deep or impetuous rivers, no ranges of steep hills and mountains, no thick and vast forests covering said hills (think of the Ardenne forest). Poor Danes couldn't do much.
@@gelul12 More like Dutch soldiers did their job (admirably) to protected the Royal Family until they could escape, and then gave up when Rotterdam was bombed. No one in his right mind would expect the Royal Family to stick around, get captured, and held for ransom, and it would be MORONIC to continue a fight that could not be won.
The Dutch have such a long cool history. I was always surprised they surrendered so quickly even with the surprise and quickness of the German military at that point in the war. It’s good to hear some positives from that sad and tumultuous time. Thanks from Alabama
Rotterdam suffered the first air raid of the 2nd war it was flattened and 1500+ killed. The Dutch government got an ultimatum surrender or we will bomb Amsterdam and after that Utrecht. Your choice.
I remember how my grandfather explained me how it was in 1940, when scherpenzeel got invaded, he said: *''It was a nightmare, we thought this wouldent happen, planes flying above our heads, and artillery shells landing near us, we would jump in a small space underground when we heared bombs, artillery shells or planes.''* I to am a historian. I still live with my parents in Scherpenzeel. I have readed in a book about the old church, being bombed from the skies and the church fell apart. After the war they rebuilded it, its insane how we people in Scherpenzeel survived those moments.

The Dutch tactics were mostly centred around holding out for a week or so, while the Brits and French would move up trough Belgium and connect up to form a front similar to WWI. The Dutch had three main problems: (1) They were (too) late to rearm, train and mobilize and were caught relatively unprepared. (2) The Germans had done a lot of intelligence gathering and reconnaissance in the years before, posing as tourists, traders and such. (3) The Dutch were inexperienced, having not really fought a war in a century, and were thus strategically and tactically not prepared. Finally, the country is simply to small to do any defence in depth against the Blitzkrieg, only Russia was really big enough. The Dutch had to surrender, not because their army was defeated, but because of the threat to the civilian population. The Germans bombed and destroyed the city of Rotterdam, and threatened to destroy the other cities as well. Otherwise the Dutch might have lasted a few more days, as planned, but it would not have mattered, as the Brits and French were having their own problems in places like Dunkirk and were in no position to come and help.
I totally disagree with surrendering. They should carried on and not surrender so quickly. More fatalities sure but you fight until the last man standing against an evil empire.

There's also a school of thought that the War of Five Days delayed the 9th Panzer Divison's re-deployment into Belgium at a time when the BEF was retreating to Dunkirk. A time when such a delayed re-deployment may well have influenced the outcome at Dunkirk.
One thing that impressed me when visiting the Kazematten at the Afsluitdijk was a helmet worn by a Dutch soldier. Apparently the "logo" of the lion at the front of the Dutch helmets was a weak spot. This soldier was hit directly in the logo and killed. Definitely worth a visit.

Thank you my Dutch friends, you slowed the Germans down in their conquest of Europe. That was a good thing as Britain stood alone in the Battle of Britain. It's common knowledge that beating the Germans in 1940 was a crucial point in the war
The BEF was in Belgium by the time Winkelman surrendered, and somewhat busy - and also in the mire of Norway. The British landing at Hoek was only intended to destroy harbour facilities and fuel stocks. Also, the landing provided the means for evacuating the Queen et. al. The Allied intervention was by way of the French VII Army and the Breda Variant to Plan D.

My uncle Harry Stappers was in the Roermond underground and was helped by my mother Annemarie Mevissen. My uncle was interrogated twice, during the war, and had his ribs kicked in both times but gave no information and was released each time. My mother's boyfriend was executed by the Germans after they marched overnight into Roermond on the first night of the war since the city is only two miles from the German border. My mother was sent to three forced labour/concentration camps during the following years, but was liberated at Regensberg, Germany in 1945.

The heros of those 5 days are always honored. The soldiers at the grebbeberg and the airforce with old planes and outnumbered showed some bravery against a way stronger enemy
Top man! Never learnt so much about the invasion. A nice treat after a lifetime of only talking of German occupation. My take up untill I started watching the vid; we thought we could stay neutral as in ww1 thus we were ill prepared, we thought the rivers could hold them and were surprised by the new invention of para troopers. My take after this; we did a pretty fine job considering the area we cover, and the dominant war machine we were up against. Not to mention the pre war conditions were bad, which led many to collaborate with the Germans who seemed to somehow have the answer to the economic woes of the 30s. I often think that is overlooked, they were recession heroes in a time of enormous poverty in Europe. I think that made so many people in neighbouring countries collaborate with them, they felt forgotten by their own leaders and saw in Germany a sense of pride they lost. This is what I concluded after many stories from my grandfather, who said anyone will raise their right hand if it may deliver you a plate of food.
About the Afsluitdijk - I first checked out those bunkers because they provided a nice spot to have lunch during a long bike ride. I read that three further factors contributed to the Dutch success there, namely, obviously, the fact that it is a bottleneck, the Germans had no hope of surrounding the Dutch position; the fact that German high command had not deemed it important enough to send air support (the one thing the Dutch were vulnerable to everywhere); and finally there also was a Dutch warship nearby in the Waddenzee, which could provide artillery support against the German advance while staying out of range of the German guns.
History Hustle, you failed to mention that the Germans lost essentially two thirds of their air lift capability during the Battle of Holland. As a consequence, it was essentially unrealistic if not impossible for the Germans to launch an invasion of the United Kingdom later that same year as they no longer possessed the logistical capability to do so - despite what we are still told.
Dear Harold, I did not fail to mention it, because it lies more nuanced. Please watch my video about it. Lemme know your thoughts: ua-cam.com/video/7Ovp9YKH8aY/v-deo.html
@@HistoryHustle Sorry, I wasn't aware of the existence of that video. I have now watched it but unfortunately I still tend to disagree with you. IMO, the threatened invasion of Britain was more bluff than reality. Not only would the Germans require air superiority to have any chance of success but they would also have had to eliminate the Royal Navy. That was simply unrealistic and I'm sure they were aware of this. But that aside, their chances of pulling off a successful airborne invasion, if that was ever realistic, died during the Battle of Holland. Not only could they not make up the losses, but they must have realized from their experience in the Netherlands that their air transport fleet did not have the depth necessary to sustain an invasion force on the other side of the Channel. Take a further 200 odd aircraft out of that equation (aircraft that would otherwise have been available had it not been for the Dutch) and the task becomes an impossibility. Given what happened in the Netherlands, I don't think it would be an exaggeration to suggest that what remained of the German air transport fleet after the Battle of France would have been chewed-up over Britain in just a matter of days.

This was a very interesting and educational video. My Late grandfather was in the dutch military at the time and fought the german invasion. He went into the Dutch resistance movement after the Dutch capitulation and had to eventually flee the country for Great Britain (engelandvaarder) after their resistance movement apparently got betrayed to the germans. As far as i am aware of, he spent the remainder of the war in Great Britain, doing what, i unfortunately do not know because simply, no one ever really told me. My family historie about the war has always been, shall we say, a bit loaded, because of the trauma involved, and was, therefor, seldomly discussed ? Which to this day i find a real pity, if i am honest.

What I found interesting is that the supreme commander basically gave.the Germans the middle finger during the surrender. Before surrendering he ordered the navy and merchant fleets to go the Britain. And refused to call them back when the Germans demanded this. If I remember correctly the German negotiators had great respect for that man.

May 11, 1940. My 23 year old grandfather and a friend go to the Dutch army office in Amsterdam, with the intention of telling the people there to give them guns and send them to the front, so they can shoot at those invading Germans. This was the Sarphatistraat office, where later I went for my own army suitability assessment (but, that is a story of Dutch army incompetence in itself). Some deeply surprised, confused, coffee drinking and sleepy persons slowly walk up to them and tell them to go home because "this can take months and month, you know, and we'll figure something out, if we have to". In short, stories about the Dutch army's efficiency should always be taken with a grain of salt.
There is quite a defensive line along the canal near Leusden which I have visited several times. While in poor shape today, this line of large and small pillboxes and bunkers permitted the Dutch Army to hold the Germans back. The Dutch Army did a pretty good job of holding off the German conventional infantry and horse-drawn transport while the more advanced German forces attacked in the urban areas. The central government surrendered while the front line troops were fairly successful. I understand that in the late 1990's, the army engineers held an exercise to clear the small canal of munitions which had landed there during the fighting.
Special thing about the battle of the afsluitdjik: my dutch grandfather told me that they still fought 2 days after the surrender until they were finally convinced by dutch officials to surrender
Niels Hennet, there was a huge disbelieve when The Netherlands surrendered. The army at the Kornwerderzand was succesful, and captain Christiaan Boers thought he could win and kick the Germans out of Friesland. Later on he was a member of the Dutch resistance, but they arrested him and he was executed at a concentrationcamp.
My great uncle from my mothers side was Lt. Ham, who was second in command at the Afsluitdijk (Kornwerderzand) under Captain Boers. He was captured after their surrender and ended up in Colditz. Tried and succeeded to escape twice, but was then captured again and made an example (he was put in front of a firing squad by the Germans). My mums aunt Gre, his widow, was one if the honored guest at the monument each year as the battle was remembered. For any Dutchies here: my great uncles combat reports are still there to read at the Dutch national archives online. It gives a detailed and often very personal report of the days up to their surrender. Worth a look!
@@HistoryHustle If you talk about a no nonsense example of Dutch courage under fire, the Afsluitdijk is a prime example. Holding off the vanguard of a 5000+ men German division with a mere 250 men, albeit in a prepared position, despite German artillery and air support, is not to be sniffed at 🙂
Thanks. From here in the UK it was good to see an overview of the dilemmas facing the Netherlands after the failure (you described ) of France and Britain to retaliate immediately to the invasion of Poland. abwo47 The Germans were still nice to you in contrast to what you did with the Indonesians, even after the Second World War or what you did. in your former colonies.

Greetings my Dutch friend from an American from "New Amsterdam". My uncle was shot down over Holland. Thanks for all assistance that the Dutch provided him. When will you tell the great story of New Amsterdam and those Dutch businessmen who paid $24 for Manhattan?
Thanks for your message!

You're welcome. Thanks for your insights. This week a video about the German aircraft losses will be uploaded. Cheers!

What I have heard in the past is that the Netherlands taking out so many paratroopers and the planes made the invasion of Crete more difficult and this in time made the Germans scrap the idea of using paratroopers against the British. So sort of a knock on effect. Any credence to that?
Also the german army landed there planes on the airport of den haag and all of them got shot to pieces
Yes you are absolutely right. An entire year of transport plane production was lost in those 5 days.
Correct.
Even general Kesselring said they lost too many experienced pilots.
The Dutch may have been taken out quickly, but when they escaped to Britain they became even greater warriors.

Thanks for sharing this information.

The netherlands had so much defence potential. Sadly that the dutch army was badly underfunded . And that the british did not realy want to help.
Indeed, a very British troops disembarked at Hoek van Holland, but quickly left.
For another trench war perhaps, not the mobile battle the Germans introduced and with aircraft becoming an integral part of warfare. We could flood land yes, but then you also lock yourself up with no way out only to be bombed into submission.
My uncle Harry Stappers was in the Roermond underground and was helped by my mother Annemarie Mevissen. My uncle was interrogated twice, during the war, and had his ribs kicked in both times but gave no information and was released each time. My mother's boyfriend was executed by the Germans after they marched overnight into Roermond on the first night of the war since the city is only two miles from the German border. je bent ook echt een typische geschiedenis leraar :p Leuke video
Bedankt!
This is what I concluded after many stories from my grandfather, who said anyone will raise their right hand if it may deliver you a plate of food.

well the accent gave it away for me
About the Afsluitdijk - I first checked out those bunkers because they provided a nice spot to have lunch during a long bike ride.
Thanks for the additional information!
Zeker, interessant!

Lemme know your thoughts:
ua-cam.com/video/7Ovp9YKH8aY/v-deo.html
I see. Thanks for taking the time to write your response.
I'm from Luxembourg and I say Bravo! To the Dutch for their courageous des fighting!

The Dutch channel is for my students (History Hustle Nederlands).
I started in 2015 in Dutch, later English. Now there are 2 channels: English (this one) and Dutch.
@HistoryHustle absolutely stupendous! Very proud of you. That's sounds like quite the task to do. And maintain rhem!
The Dutch fought quite well of course; but what can you do when you are vastly outnumbered.

They should make a movie about the 5 collaborators who didnt manage to help the german nco in the mission because of a rouch night before XD
For some reason I keep thinking about the scene from Inglourious Basterds.

And busted
Many traumatized people from that time rarely spoke about their experiences. Thanks for your reply.
1:43 this reminds me a polish soldiers who blew up the bridge in Tczew at 1 of september 1939 but unfortunately they end up beeing shot by germans in act of revenge and btw great video :)

@@HistoryHustle Sweet. Great video man!
The Dutch in the end beat Germany in Hamburg 1988.
I was 2 at the time and it was perhaps my earliest memory. Those were the days!
🤔 I was very drunk after that victory ( i lived in Rotterdam back then perfect revange)... 😁
I was 10 and it was awsome , the last loss for the WC against the spanisch stil hurts tho .
Fascinating episode. Thank you.
Have you made a video about the Dutch Queen being taken to England? I imagine there might have been some tense moments in that move. (And sorry if it's findable....and i just missed it. )
Thanks for your reply. Haven't made a video on that. Perhaps in the future. Can't tell when.
So you mean to say that the dutch fought in rotterdam and not the english?? So battlefield 5 is wrong?
It is
The English were there with a small engineer force I believe
Correct, BF5 is wrong on this point. The English never made it to Rotterdam.
What I found interesting is that the supreme commander basically gave.the Germans the middle finger during the surrender. Before surrendering he ordered the navy and merchant fleets to go the Britain. And refused to call them back when the Germans demanded this. If I remember correctly the German negotiators had great respect for that man.
Not sure, have to read more about this.
I love your accent you sound like an american farmboy.
Thanks haha!
Yup.. or american farmboys just sounds like the Dutch ;)

Was there a battle in Woudenberg? Was er een slag in Woudenberg?
The battle of Scherpenzeel was partly fought on "Woudenberg territory" I believe since the line was on Woudenberg side.
Yeah I can tell the Grebbelinie is on the Woudenberg side, some bunkers and (small parts of) trenches still remain
True.
Here my take on this:
ua-cam.com/video/o-dBkEqdq-o/v-deo.html
Thank you for a very informative video, top notch presentation.
You're welcome, thanks!
Thanks for your reply. Think you mean the so-called 'Asschatterkeerkade'.
Heel erg goed gedaan. Proficiat, ga zo door.
Bedankt!
Special thing about the battle of the afsluitdjik: my dutch grandfather told me that they still fought 2 days after the surrender until they were finally convinced by dutch officials to surrender
Thanks for sharing Niels. Respect for your grandfather!

Thank you for sharing this, very interesting!
@@HistoryHustle If you talk about a no nonsense example of Dutch courage under fire, the Afsluitdijk is a prime example. Holding off the vanguard of a 5000+ men German division with a mere 250 men, albeit in a prepared position, despite German artillery and air support, is not to be sniffed at 🙂
You are very good at this, please make some of your videos longer.
Which ones? Lemme know.
Thanks. From here in the UK it was good to see an overview of the dilemmas facing the Netherlands after the failure (you described ) of France and Britain to retaliate immediately to the invasion of Poland. I guess a non-neutral Netherlands might have enhanced that capability. I'm a pacifist, actually, but still interested in the mechanics of active resistance to Totalitarianism. Remembering the Dutch, German, Danish and Norwegian Resistance this week too, as you all bought us time.
