When they inspected her her break shoes where completely worn out

AWVR 777 actually happened and was actually stopped by the radioman for 1206, injured, held the brakes whilst the engineer climbed all the way to the lumber cars, where the radioman was picked up and taken via truck to the engine up front where he stopped the train
yeah, it did truly happen, for a little extension the incident is called "Crazy Eights" following along with the locomotives number, 8888, they actually stopped it like in the movie, they hooked a train to the back, and slowed it down until someone jumped on and applied the brake!
